“2 hour 20 minute wait”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/07/2012

I've been with the RAC for 25 years. I won't be with them for 26 years after waiting 2 hours and 20 minutes for them.....or should I say, a sub contractor (On Time Breakdown) My renewal was pending a few days after this event, so I cancelled my Direct Debit. When I got a call asking why my payment of £75 had not gone through, I explained why I cancelled it. The young lady said "maybe our Technicians were out helping other people who had broken down" I said "That's fine. So maybe you need more Breakdown Technicians?" The young lady simply ended the call. There was no effort to keep me as a member, even though I had loyaly been with them for 25 years!!

“Don't bother calling them.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 27/07/2012

Go to leave a car park thats just getting dark, and the engine management light comes on. It could be anything, so I called the RAC at 8.45pm and they assured me a mechanic would be with me worst case by 9.55pm. 10pm comes and goes so I called them again as I heard nothing, and they said 'sorry the earliest anyone can come now is 12.30 am the next morning'. That's a total waiting time of 3hrs 45mins in a now pitch black car park, but how do I know they won't revise that time again if they don't turn up by 12.30 am. I had no alternative but to continue my journey not knowing what problems there are with my engine. To add insult to injury just as I drove off the same operator then called me back, raising my hopes that they might come sooner, but no, he just said 'sorry I've called the wrong number'. Don't even think of joining this useless service (or lack of), they just take the money and don't deliver a worthwhile service.

“Flood call out Dorset”

written by on 11/07/2012

RAC appalling!! Called out 7/7/12. No assistance initially offered as was told by rude operator that as was my fault it and a floofed road was accidental damage and rwas an insurance job.after several minutes of arguing and being told their policies had changed a week ago a decision was made that a call out request would be requested but would charge £ 85.00 plus recovery rate of £2.00 per mile. No point in paying for full Rac membership if you breakdown in freak weather conditions as its an Insurance problem.Five hours waiting for a man with a van to turn up and tell me it's Your Fault while I'm surrounded by broken down cars an ambulance that broke down whole it's lights we're on trying to get through and a fire engine trying to assist.RAC man rocked my car couldn't look or fix it ordered recovery and left didn't tell me he had ordered the recovery vehicle when he left I had to phone to be told a three hour wait.AA man arrived to car next to mine started to work on engine and got the car back on road.Rac did not even try.been with Rac for Years.called out twice.wont be with them anymore.rude arrogant aggressive and lacking in basic car mechanics.

“Bad customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 05/07/2012

I broke down on 3rd July at 5pm, patrol came in fairly good time and booked me a hire car to collect later that evening at 7:30pm. Having made my way down to the location they had provided to collect the hire car, and waited around, I then receive a call from RAC advising me the car is not available after all and one will be with me by 10am the following morning. 10:45am the next day a car arrives - 45mins after they had promised it. After speaking to customer service, they decided there was nothing they were willing to do to remedy the situation and would not extend the hire of the car. What I think is ridiculous is that the RAC are given an opportunity to turn a bad situation into a good one, by extending a hire at a cost of under £30 to themselves, but instead refuse to do so and blame the problem on their suppliers. So now, I will move the the AA and they will potentially lose thousands of pounds of business over the future years, as well as me not recommending them when someone asks about breakdown cover. All for £30. Not good service, would not recommend them and think companies like this have a lot to learn. Wish I had been with the AA - they would've been a lot more helpful. And they are probably worth any extra they may have cost.

“Stranded Females Beware”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 03/07/2012

My wife recently had a blowout, and was stranded without mobile phone or cash. Despite being labelled a 'priority' the RAC were not able to get to her for 5 hours!! There was no issue with weather in the area (June 22nd Harrow). The service was outsourced to another company whose driver told us that RAC were not providing enough patrols to service their customers. I emailed RAC and it's been over 10 days and I have not had a response. Avoid, and use one of the other well known brands.

“Service leaves something to be desired ”

★★★☆☆

written by dennis66 on 16/06/2012

I've been with the RAC for years on my breakdown cover but when it recently came to renewal my price hit the roof. Telephoned them and managed to get the price back down, received three different quotes in the post after that. Having spoken to a number of advisor's as a result of these quotes coming through the post I was assured my lower price would be charged. Surprise surprise when they took nearly double what they had quoted me. I have now cancelled my breakdown cover.

“BRILLIANT ALL ROUND”

★★★★★

written by on 26/05/2012

The clutch went on our nissan quasqui just outside Belmont Park and Ride- the staff there were so helpful and friendly - the RAC came almost straight away even though they had said it would be an hour. The two lads were incredibly helpful in taking care of our car and ourselves. They towed us to the garage and took us home - all in a friendly manner which was very much appreciated. I dare say they would say it was their job but I applaud them for what they did for us - we were put at ease and our day was not as ruined as it might have been if it had not been for their attitude.

“Service stretched thin to make money - useless. Go...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Omriff on 25/05/2012

The call centre is understaffed. It takes about 15 minutes to get an answer - on an 0800 number which costs 14 pence per minute from a mobile. Who calls on anything else these days? And then they tell you that someone will be with you in about 45 minutes. I knew what was wrong with my car - flat battery because of a parking light being left on. No calls to the RAC over the past 11 years except for the same problem. Then, they had a private contractor who came out at 1.00 am. Now, no show for 2 hours. It would be better not to pay for the cover and to get a local garage to come out and in the worst case get a tow home.

“RAC are brilliant!”

★★★★★

written by chris.m.b on 15/05/2012

Attempting to get to work early one morning, car simply wouldn't strike. Ring RAC and explain the situation - say they'll try and have someone with me in the next hour or so as I'm in a safe location (fair enough). Man with a van turns up around 30 minutes later, incredibly friendly and helpful - put me at ease immediately. Wasn't carrying the correct part for my car, but went to wait outside the nearest supplier and returned within twenty minutes. Fixed it on the spot, incredibly cheap, efficienct and helpful. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone!

“Got Me Home Promptly”

★★★★★

written by PickleJim on 14/05/2012

My Honda CRV suddenly lost power exiting a bend & limped for about half a mile before stopping. When I rang the RAC I could only describe my location by the name of the next village along what was an unclassified road. THeir operative rang me to say he was on his way and to clarify my location. He was with me within 40 minutes of my initial call and after checking that I had Diesel in the car he took about 5 mins to diagnose a stuck EGR valve which he blocked off so that the car would run in "Limp Home" mode. He then followed me home before we then completed the paperwork there. He made me feel that getting me home was what mattered and the paperwork came after. I also had my motorcycle recovered home on a trailer after complete electrical failure and received just the same service.

“rubbish service from RAC”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/05/2012

I will not be renewing my family membership this year because of the appalling service from the rac. My 20 year old son had the misfortune to hit a piece of concrete in the road which had just rolled off a lorry, this made a large hole in the sump under the car and all the oil leaked out. He couldn't avoid it as he was on a narrow road with lorries on the other side. He called the RAC who sent out a recovery vehicle but was told when the guy arrived that it was classed as an accident and so wasn't covered! He was stranded 80 miles from home and we had to pay privately to get his car back home. Appalling service and would not touch this company again

Always remember they are a breakdown organisation.
In the event of an accident your fault or not you have to go through your car insurance.Thats why you have it.Realise the diffeerence and your one star maybe a three. They shouls have established that before they sent someone but that depends what you said on the call, did you just say oil was leaking out.?

“Poor support ater accident”

★☆☆☆☆

written by chrischalky on 21/04/2012

After being the victim of a quite bad accident, in which i was fortunate to be able to walk away with only bumps and aches (the car was consierably less fortunate) I rang the RAC. The unhelpful person I spoke to told me that the RAC no longer dealt with accidents and tht it was changed in the policy a couple of years ago (not something they excatly adverised and as I was renewing I had assumed all things were as when I originally joined). Better still the person I dealt with was unhelpful which at the best of times isn't good but when you are in shock after an accident much worse. I was told to contact my insurance, of course not a number I had on me, after some discussion she agreed to get me the number off the web - helpfully then giving me the wrong number which I only found out when I was off the phone. Now of course you could argue that I should look and I guesss that is so, but woulddn't you expect if you pay top money and I do with RAC that a. they would tell you properly? Wouldn't you also expect that you would get better service than other much cheaper breakdown agencies? Oh no interestinly a number of breakdown services do cover after an accident it's the very expensive RAC that do not. Although I am only half way through my years membership I am going to leave them and go to another - not only saving a lot of money but also getting more all around cover.

Hgvanman2012's Response to chrischalky's Review

Written on: 30/04/2012

Neither the AA nor the RAC offer to take vehicles away following an accident and this has been the policy of both for some time and is also clearly stated in the Terms and Conditions of contract. Insurance companies are the first people to contact in the event of an accident and with comprehensive policies will normally arrange the collection and repair of accident vehicles.
Only the AA and RAC offer breakdown services using their own patrols - to the best of my knowledge all other services use contractors who may be good or bad, depending on who you get. I have read some horror stories about some alternative services.
As a driver, you should be carrying your insurance details in the car along with your driving licence.

“RAC a reason to go elsewhere ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jimmy1882 on 29/03/2012

One star only because I had to!! Awful service from the RAC. I was on the basic package and was asked at the roadside (for a jump start) if i'd like to upgrade which I did. The driver then explained the transaction would go through on 8TH of the month and two weeks later they take the payment. At NO point do you get a pack explaining their terms and conditions. I still have yet to receive anything from them regarding their terms and conditions three weeks on!! Three weeks later I breakdown a day before we were due to visit my Mum where I usually get my vehicle serviced and fixed. I called them at 7.13AM in the morning and their driver wasn't dispatched until 8.08AM. The driver arrived at 8.45AM a long way after the 45 minutes they claim on their webpage. The time of the drivers arrival would of been fine if I'd called at 8.08AM but i didn't I called way before. First issue. The vehicle needed to be taken to a garage and instead of asking them to tow me to my normal garage (81 miles away) I thought I'd go local to save on the cost for them. Mistake or what. They towed me less than 2 miles (which my old cover would have been fine for) and off the driver went after spending less than 20 minutes with me and the vehicle. The garage I went to was unable to repair the vehicle so I phoned the RAC again and asked what they could offer as my vehicle was still in need of recovery and I was unable to make the journey to visit my Mum (where my usual garage is). They said that because they'd already been out to the vehicle that they wouldn't come out again. This wouldn't of annoyed me if they hadn't explained that if I'd asked to be taken to my normal garage first they would of done it no questions asked. I was stupidly trying to do the right thing by making their time and travel less, word of advise don't! Get them to take you to the garage you use and trust first off even if your in Lands End and need to get to John 'O' Groats they will take you!! I wouldn't of minded if the terms and conditions were given to me at the roadside or if they'd posted it to me with a confirmation letter along with the terms and conditions. At this point I would of known that I was only eligible for one callout and would have got them to tow me to my usual garage and not gone local to be helpful to them. They then struck me with amazement and said you've not used your new cover, your old cover would of covered you for a 10 mile tow. I was towed for less than 2 miles taking them all of 20 minutes at maximum (and after being slow in dispatching a vehicle to me). I was a little confused at what my new full roadside recovery was for, why did I pay the extra? At this point I'm offered a full refund on my new cover, why? I can only asume they'd rather pay me the money back to get out of offering the service I thought I'd payed for at the side of the road! All in all the service has been appalling from the sign up date to the point of use. I'd advise anyone to ask for the terms and conditions in FULL before you sign up or upgrade your account. Myself I will be recommending anyone use other roadside recovery companies other than this one but I'd also advise that you ask for the full terms and conditions before you sign up or upgrade (which mine was an upgrade!) Poor all round RAC lost a long running customer today!!

tried to change my cover at its aniversary from 'Car only' to 'Car & Caravan Recovery: 1st attempt I was told up to 25ft covered & fobbed off, rig is 35ft? 2nd call told I could have Arrival for £99. which was less than my car cover at £142. but needed club code. 3rd call with club code person on call 2 no longer exists and told £99 was incorrect but offered cover at £142. so I renewed under the Arrival Scheme' then waited for my new cards & £20. C&CC vouchers yipee! Or maybe notafter waiting and passing my expiry date for current cover nothing happened & no money has left my account, so with no cover at all I phoned tonight to be told their systems are down & can I call back tomorrow, at which I said it would be easier to join a competitor scheme - response 'Thats up to you sir'! I give up!

“Excellent at Roadside but inadequate Office/despatch”

★★☆☆☆

written by TonyBlackall on 19/03/2012

I've been in the RAC for many years (maximum coverage) and had the occasional breakdown which has been sorted out perfectly by RAC Roadside patrols. However, a year ago I broke down on the way back from a hospital where my young son had just had a broken arm cast. It was late at night, it was wintery cold and raining. The RAC refused to come out on the basis that we were 11 miles away (10 was the maximum they say) and because I didn't have a mobile phone on which they could call back (I was usuing a pay phone)they said that there was nothing they could do - it took us over 4 hours to get home with me and my two young sons eventually arriving home at 2am freezing and wet through in our t-shirts. On checking my contract I noticed that there is no mention whatsoever of any 10 mile limit (which they often quote) and they had a duty to help us. I phoned customer services who said that they did indeed have a 10 mile limit and argued that it didn't need to be mentioned in their contract. Moreover, even on the following day they would not entertain any idea of helping me recover my car (even to a local garage). I threatened to sue for all costs involved and they continued to deny all responsibility. Fed up with them - I cancelled my policy and issued legal proceedings against them which included a small amount of compensation for my boys. Within a week they phoned me to discuss the matter further and I refused. They then agreed to meet all my costs in full including the compensation. The moral is that they can't be trusted to fulfil their contract, can't be trusted to be honest as to the reasons why and cannot be relied upon to do anything other than avoid their responsibilities until legally bound to do so. I say again though that I have never had anything good to say about their roadside people.
