“Terrible ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 68Boyd on 04/09/2023

Unfortunately I have experience of using many different breakdown services, and for some reason I thought to go with AA. I am a new customer to them, and have had the terrible experience of using them. There was no communication, I was expected to wait around for them to arrive which was over an hour in the scorching heat, I had to phone them to find out any information at all. I was taking 40 minutes towards home, and for some reason had to wait over 2 hours for someone else to come and collect me to take me the rest of the way - which was 15 minutes!!!! I am extremely disappointed with the service from AA and will immediately be transferring my breakdown cover to a move reliable service. I will always be sharing with people my experience and encouraging them to go elsewhere for breakdown service. What a terrible service AA provide!

“26 hours wait”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Munozdc1985 on 24/08/2023

I had a small crash which meant my car could not be driven the 168 miles home. I was by myself but am disabled so was told I was high priority 1-3 hours to get me and my car home. On the next 6 hours I had to phone them as they hadn't phoned or updated me. They kept telling me 90 mins I would wait 2 hours then ring again. By 9pm I was told there was no vehicles available so would be the morning. I checked into a motorway hotel which thankfully had rooms and phoned again a 6am to be told 9-10 am but the driver couldn't take me all the way so I would be dropped at another service station. Sure enough I was collected and dropped by the AA at the next services but was told it would be a 2 hour wait for another provider to get me and take me home. 4 Hours later the driver turned up but said they were driving me 36 mins to another service station. Dropped at 3.30 and told AA would pick me and the car up at 4.15. 5.15 I phoned again to ask for an update to be told 8.15! I explained I was a loan female and disabled but there was nothing they could do. A different company did pick me up at 6.45 and I walked through my door 26 hours after first requesting there help.

“Incompetence and Lies”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Woodardbd280 on 08/08/2023

daughter’s car was checked by a patrol, due to overheating, stated safe to drive-just needed coolant and oil. Car severely overheated on the motorway blowing head gasket so NOT safe to drive. Patrolman now lying and staying he told us it was unsafe to drive and should go straight to a garage! Really? What parent being told that, would send their 20 year old daughter on the motorway to drive 200+ miles?! Ludicrous. I am utterly disgusted with his behaviour and as he failed to give us a written/emailed report on the day apparently that’s tough on us! She only had the car 6 months -bought from a main dealer -she’s a GB athlete and needs her car for training etc-absolutely appalling treatment. What’s happened to the AA? We’ve been loyal customers for 25 years and always been very satisfied with the service but this patrolman not only did not know his job but then lied to the detriment of an unfunded hard working young lady .

“Refused to do what I pay them to do”

★☆☆☆☆

written by HarryPatrick on 03/06/2023

I paid membership since before Christmas for services including recovery to cover both my bikes. When I hit a fox and broke my wrist last Friday I needed them to recover my bike for me. Drive him two miles home. They refused because I was "involved in an accident". Even though I pay for recovery. They kept trying to fob me off saying they could claim it on my Insurance. Probably think they're clever or something. Useless money grabbers who will take your money but won't do their job the one time you need them!

The Aa's Response to HarryPatrick's Review

Written on: 06/06/2023

Hi, If you're involved in an accident, we can help with Accident Assist if you'd like us to handle your claim. If not, then there would be a charge for a recovery as it's not a breakdown. We hope you're okay and got home safely.

Do not use AA breakdown, the service is very poor and unreliable. I've reported a breakdown 8 o'clock pm after 2 hours recovery vehicle showed up which was not the right size to tow my car dispite AA knowing what car I'm driving ????. I was told to rearrange for recovery and after 12 hours I'm still on the side of the road and no sing of AA. This is a joke

“Shady company. Avoid like plague”

★☆☆☆☆

written by qyBarrett439 on 17/04/2023

In my opinion and experience AA Breakdown cover is shady company. They break the contract and manipulate the situation for the purpose to avoid towing or paying for car to be serviced (if you have that additional option). My experience is similar to many experience you can find in online reviews. They will gladly take your money for the membership but avoid fulfilling their legal obligation by making up unfounded reasons without any proof or sense. You may need car breakdown cover in the future. AA will let you down.

“£300 for a one mile transport via truck with Premium...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by andypa38 on 05/04/2023

My mother had two flat tyres, on her Rover 45, the AA charged her £300 to recover the car 1 mile to my house, absolute deceived my 82 year old. She had Premium Cover & they did her over when she was stuck at the side of a dangerous road, claiming the tyres were damaged in an RTA - which they were not. Refused to pick up car without an on the spot card payment of £300!!!!!! They will be cancelled & history from tomorrow. The AA UK You,d give Gypsies a good name. She has been a member with you for 7yrs, broken down twice, mis-fuel, charge £220, two punctures combined £300 for a 1 mile trip. £520 for two calls on top of your over-priced T&C laden service. She just got her re-newal, she decided against it she,s not a deviant.

“Be careful who you trust in your Automotive time of need”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Scott25465 on 10/03/2023

I broke down on the 10th of January for the first time in my six year membership and first time I needed the AA. I was left on the side of the motorway on the M5 for 6 1/2 hours in the pouring rain with a draining battery. After this horrendous wait, I had then been recovered by an outsourced contractor with a less than impressive recovery truck which was ill equipped for the job. My vehicle sustained multiple damage, which is in dispute at this time. Upon loading which was 30 minute ordeal of recovering I was dropped at a service station 22 miles away from my house. Waited another 40 minutes for the AA patrol to collect me again to take me home. From start to finish, it was 9 hours!! This does not need a sympathetic or half-hearted apology from robot staff in customer services, my complaint and compensation is in hand. This testimony is for anybody that is reviewing this vehicle recovery service as a potential candidate.

Complying with driving time regulations is completely out of the question in this case. Ultimately damaging a vehicle and is not taking liability for this. Just Waiting time does not warrant a negative review, however, collectively my situation does.

“Great Roadside Assistance ”

★★★★★

written by 002DV on 23/02/2023

Had a chap named Guy help me with my car today. Having recently switched over from RAC due to a disagreement over a battery warranty, first experience was great. Perfect communication, ran additional tests they didn’t have to and really helped me diagnose the problem. Gave recommendations of where to go at the lowest rate, checked my tyre pressure as they looked low, and came earlier than we expected. Offered a tip as a thank you, and even refused it. Can’t fault the service or the technician at all, and will certainly stay with them from now on. Many thanks to Guy and the AA.

“Not there when you need it”

★★☆☆☆

written by Terrencet468 on 01/02/2023

Member for some years now (roadside assistance, relay, parts cover etc) and never had much problem with AA on the mercifully rare occasions I needed them. Last week though a breakdown at 9pm on the M1 saw us waiting for over four (4) hours in a freezing, unlit, precarious refuge whilst the AA postponed our rescue over and over, necessitating our using National Highways' recovery contractor, with all the extra expense and trouble entailed. They came through with a hire-car next day but the poor response to our original call(s) and the baffling internally contradictory maze of customer service told me not to rely on these clowns again. Suspect that C19 lockdown prompted their getting rid of patrols to allow them to concentrate on more important things like selling insurance and rating hotels and restaurants.

“Poor customer service”

written by Hollandrs1973 on 20/01/2023

Very poor customer service. Clearly the AA has no respect for loyal customers and a complete insult to our intelligence. As a regular customer i am charged £25 per month (with no breakdown claims) and a new customer pays £8 for the same cover. Not any more...

“No compassion and a waste of money!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Whistleblowerme on 12/01/2023

Wouldn't come out as hadn't pur both of my vehicles on policy as I'd requested. Wanted to charge me an extra £75. A woman o her own at night in a dodgy petrol station and they have no compassion. The AA used to be a great break down service but it seems it's now being run by school children or the snowflake society probably the latter, who have no consideration for people left in dangerous situations. I ended up calling my elderly relative out who found the fault to be a simple loose battery connection. He told me there and then to leave the AA as they are a useless waste of time and MONEY! Therefore I did not renew my membership, cancelled my direct debit and have taken my business elsewhere!! Sort yourselves out nit wit AA snowflake society and go back to school!!

Hi, if your cover is specifically on one vehicle and you breakdown in a different one, there is a charge of £75 for service. The terms and conditions and the card we send out in the post each year will advise the level of cover you hold. We're sorry you're unhappy and have since left.

“No service, no customer care”

★☆☆☆☆

written by CraigRG6 on 12/01/2023

Left in a dangerous location with no shelter for 9 hours. Eventually in desperation, and fear for my life, had to limp the vehicle home driving on the hard shoulder from Exeter to Reading at 20mph. Promised assistance the next day to relay the vehicle - no one bothered then either. Offered compensation - but after months of chasing - they just lie and tell me the cheque is in the post. 5 Weeks ago they promised another cheque was sent recorded delivery - but will not give the tracking, so it appears that is yet another lie. It's impossible to talk to anyone - When you call - they just say "we've sent an email to the team - they'll be in touch within 72 hours" but nobody ever calls back. Had family membership since 1965 - now cancelled. They simply don't care

“No common sense! Horiffic wait times, no duty of care!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JamesBradley1 on 15/12/2022

Broke down on the A2 last night at 4:40pm waited almost an hour to be towed twice as far away from home to a ''safe space'' which was a mc Donald's and a subway at the Dartford Services. The AA then needed to send someone out to check the problem (2 hours later), also on a flatbed truck that could have taken me home, I was then dumped there until 12:50am. I have woken up with a cough and cold as there was no where to sit in the warm for 8+ hours. Utterly disgusted is an understatement. A complete lack of care and common sense shown. When you are closer to home than the services, surely you should just be taken home and ease the stress on the company. It took 3 people to do the job of one person with an ounce of common sense.

Hi, we're sorry for your delay. Occasionally we do have to relay a car onto another truck as our drivers will comply with drive time regulations. These limit the amount of time & distance a driver can operate, this is for their safety and yours. We hope you're OK and got back home safely.

“Very Poor Service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Power446 on 10/12/2022

I called at 13:15 on 10 December and had to call another three times JUST TO GET A RECOVERY SLOT. Your customer care staff are appalling. Only when escalated to a manager did I get a booking, with a 9 hour waiting time. I've been a customer for 9 years paying almost £26 a month. Now it cannot be trusted. Currently 0 degrees and dropping. Incredibly poor service. I know you're busy, but you clearly need to employ more people to keep the business afloat. Off to your competitors I go!

I had a further call just before recovery asking to postpone until the following day, so I’m not happy. RAC offer the exact same service £12 a month cheaper. The technician that eventually came out was quite argumentative and told me I had a single person policy, even when showed him my account which pays for four people. Utter shambles!!! Should be ashamed.

I was on auto renew with AA and always rang them to challenge why the renewal was so expensive compared to new customer prices. They used to match the internet prices after a bit of discussion but now seem reluctant to do so. So I now change each year from AA - RAC - AA etc - getting the best quote online and then also getting cash back from Quidco. We shouldn't have to do this and it really annoys me (especially as I never claim!) but you have to play the system to save lots of money. Loyalty doesn't count for anything - even though they claim to offer special benefits to loyal members. Hope this helps.

They don't give a price because if the customer has a better price from another breakdown company they would try and beat that. Not worth renewing, go to a cash back side and signup as a new customer

i wouldn't use them period, you can get similar cover cheaper elsewhere. They are no way the premier breakdown recovery service they might once have been but are still happy to charge extortionately premium prices, and even then having cover doesn't mean they will actually bother to turn up. Try Green Flag or the numerous other recovery companies out there.

I believe its because your quote will depend on how many times you have used the service in that first year. Similar to how car insurance works, so the more claims or in this case the more times you call out roadside assistance the more your quote would be for the following year. This is why they cannot tell you in advance exactly how much your next year will be until about 4-6 weeks before your renewal is due.

I'm pretty sure that in their Policy documentation they don't make any firm promises on how long it will take to get to you if your car has broken down. This would also mean there's no penalty, as there's no contractual target.
