Back in 2008 myself and my husband did not know what to do or where to turn for help. We initially visited the CAB and after much consideration we then contacted Payplan for some help and advice. I recall the process was explained to us very clearly and they took everything from us and dealt with our problems from day one. After being recommended to enter into an IVA this is exactly what we did and since 2008 they have done nothing but support us and understand. We are now nearing completion of our IVAs and they continue to be just as helpful, understanding and friendly. Like other reviews, we seem to have gone through different case officers but this has had no effect on us or our overall plan. I have nothing but praise for the team at payplan and i hope this remains the case for a further few months while we complete our IVAs. I would highly recommend Payplan to anybody if they are in a situation they need help with.

I can't begin to imagine how your company has got away with what you do for so long. I'm seven months away from completing my IVA with Payplan. It's unfortunate that since 2008 when I started my IVA that I have had ten different case officers. One of whom sent me her resignation letter, another sent me one of her clients bank details, name and address. My current officer can only be described as barely literate. When I questioned what she meant in two of her letters she said to me " my spelling ( meaning grammar ) may be out, but I'm not the one in debt " My debt situation arose when I was in a road traffic accident which resulted in me being paralysed from the waist down and unable to return to my previous occupation. My IVA was hanging in the balance despite there being only seven months left because my inept case officer denied receiving my bank statements despite my sending them using parcelforce's next day, signed for delivery. If you are considering an IVA do not take one out with payplan. You'll get text messages telling you your IVA is in arrears seven days before your payment is due, you'll get a case worker who sends you other clients most personal information, a case worker who sends you a copy of their resignation letter and of course a case worker who, like a petulant child reminds you that ' you're the one in debt ' as a client, I never expected empathy from someone who works in a glorified call centre but I never expected to be ridiculed.

Dear Vandaorchid,

I have just taken over as the Payplan representative for this site and I am really sorry to hear about the service you have received from us. It falls way below what we expect from our staff and we would like a chance to put things right for you.

If you contact me directly I will pass your details to one of our senior managers who will review what has happened and ensure your IVA runs smoothly from now on.

“Poor debt advice ”

We contacted Payplan for debt advice intending to do a DMP stupidly thinking they were non profit. They were extremely nice but suddenly was being SOLD an IVA. Their advice led me to believe it was all singing and all dancing solution however was made aware that we may have to remortgage or pay 6 years, but seemed the best solution - as bankruptcy would mean our employers would be told and it would be in the local press, slight lies there I have since been informed. They worked out our payments but ignored some things like ground rent etc and payments seemed affordable, well they would do compared to what we had been paying. The day of the meeting we were informed that the £50 contingency wasnt being allowed and my husband also had 61 payments (initially one nil payment for higher hp payment but the £50 extra a month does not constitute a payment) and pressed for a decision that day. So thinking there was no alternative we agreed - worst mistake. From that moment on we were treated like children or criminals and only rang them when my car finance threatened repossession and to decrease the payments by an allowed 15% (they don't tell you this) no doubt it will go up 30% next year. Realised they are not there to help the debtor, charge for phone calls and now have the cheek to send text to ring them - err no I text no you ring me. We found that we can't manage on our pocket money or lack of it so We are now considering bankruptcy, but cannot get any help from STEP CHANGE due to IVA, but actually feel we cannot approach Payplan for any advice as it seems biased. A waste of 12 months and they are £6000 richer and not one penny paid to creditors, old saying Richard Turpin wore a mask.

I was directed to Payplan by the CAB after being made homeless and falling behind on loan repayments & owing £17,000. At first I was placed on a DMP paying £100 per month, but then my creditors took me to court in order to turn the screw, further increasing my debt to £21,000 (after paying £100 a month for nearly 4 years I owed £4,000 MORE than I had originally). Payplans advice was contradictory and sometimes seemed downright evasive - unwilling to give answwers that made sense and constantly exhorting me to leave it to them & trust them.I might have been inclined to do so but for their apparent inability to keep hold of documents sent to them. In the end they recommended an IVA to me, which I sam now on. In the last year I have increased my payemnts to them 20% in an effort to stop them forever demanding MORE money (over and above what they already get in my payments) - but this has'nt worked and they keep guzzling more and more and more and more...... On an IVA you are required to send in copies of payslips every 3 months for review - Payplan regularly lost the copies or declined them as being 'not good enough copies', so I took to sending them the original payslips, which they then complained about! Somehow I can't keep a case officer - I had something like 3 in the first 12 months of my IVA, and 3 more since. This in turn causes confusion when documents sent to one case officer are not passed on to the next, and all the while Payplan are accusing ME of not sending them the documents in the first place. All Payplans communications are abrupt - give this, do that now, do the other immediately - and always seem to end in '...if you don't comply immediately you'll be in breach of section blah blah of your IVA...' I thought that going with Payplan was meant to be an end to being threatened by your creditors - instead Payplan has threatened me many more times over compared to them! I wish I had gone bankrupt - I'd have lost everything but my self respect. Payplans been grinding that away for 7 years now. I WOULD'NT RECOMMEND THEM IF THEY WERE THE LAST OPTION ON EARTH.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on the service you have received from Payplan.

We assess each of our clients on an individual basis and at the time you contacted us a DMP would have been the most appropriate route out of debt, other than bankruptcy. Unfortunately a DMP does not stop creditors from seeking legal action against you if they are unhappy with the repayment plan.

Our intention is to make sure you are on a sustainable and affordable plan. It is never our intention to increase your payments without consent. If you are unhappy with your repayment amount then you need to speak to your case officer who can look into this in more detail.

A change of case officer should never affect a client’s plan, if you have any concerns then please notify us as soon as possible, especially if you believe your documents are going missing.

This is exactly what happened to me. I've had ten case officers in 4 years and 5 months. The last time I sent my payslips and bank statements they told me they'd not received them. I'd sent them with parcelforce using the next day signed for service. I sent them a screen shot of the signers name, signature which was dated and timed. They seem to be convinced that people are earning more than what they say they are. You can't forge or fake bank statements. You can't forge of fake payslips. But the best of all, you cannot deny receiving what I've sent when I've got proof it was received. I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to their abrupt messages and snappy comments.

I contacted payplan having been recommended by a friend, and having seen some excellent reviews on here. I contacted them in September 2012 with a list of my creditors. Their 'help' was to email me some template letters I could get from any website and essentially tell me to sort it out myself. Oh, but they did take the opportunity to try to sell me their PPI claim service. They were only too happy to work on my behalf if there was the chance of a commission. The woman I spoke to gave me a reference number and said to call back if I had any questions or problems. A couple of months later I felt that managing it myself wasn't working so I contacted them to ask if I could go onto a managed scheme - I've phoned and they never called back, emailed and got no response. I assume that since my debts aren't quite big enough to make it worth their while they're not prepared to help me. They're big enough to me though. I know they're free to use, but in this case you get what you pay for. Time that I could've been constructively clearing my debts lost. I'm using a different DMP company now, who charge for the service but at least provide some. Thanks for nothing payplan.

Hi

Thank you for taking the time for provide some feedback on the service you have received from Payplan.

Unfortunately sometimes people call us and for whatever reason it is unsuitable for them to enter into a plan with us; this could be down to a low surplus or a low level of debt. When this happens we provide them with a Self Help Pack, which we did in your case. This is designed to help you set up your own arrangement with your creditors to repay your debts.

You should have been given a reference number and access to our Special Advice Team who can offer assistance to you at any point. I am very sorry that your attempt to contact us failed.

First telephone call went well. I was told they could help, contact my creditors, help reduce/freeze interest payments. The set up paper work was very easy to complete. (However I ended up calling all of them myself over the following weeks as they did not hear from anybody at Pay Plan & thought I had no intention of paying) Second telephone call they started trying to sell me many products that I did not want or require. Many calls from them later, I ended up agreeing to pay £5 a month for life cover just to get them off my back & start the plan. They take the money, it sits in their account? for at least a week. Creditors constantly send me reminders about late payments & add charges as they are not paid straight away. On some accounts I have barely made any progress. I owed about £7000, I have now paid £2000 yet my debts still stand at £6000 due to these 'late payment' charges. I was told I would be debt free in 2.5 years at £205 a month payment. A year on, I can see that is completely untrue. When looking at my account online, not one of the balances owed to creditors is correct. I still speak to creditors to confirm I am still with Pay Plan, they DO have the months payment, NO, I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY HAVE NOT BEEN PAID YET!! This happens most months. I have a real issue with the length of time from taking the money from my bank account to reaching my creditors. I also have an issue with the way they split the payments, I would much prefer higher amounts to go to those accounts where interest is still being added. Overall the staff I have managed to talk to have been very polite, but remember while they may be a 'free' service, they do work for the creditors & the staff do get paid. I am seriously considering contacting the creditors to make payments directly to them myself in the hope of stopping interest charges & becoming debt free much more quickly.

Hi

Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback about the service that you have received from Payplan.

At the start of your plan we contact all of your creditors to inform them of the plan that you have set up and that in future all payments will come from Payplan. However in some cases this information can take a while to filter down, which can mean that some creditors take a little while to note on the changes in their system and they will continue to send out reminders and other letters requesting payment. This is out of Payplan’s control and if this happens to you we always recommend that you send copies of these letters into your case officer so that we can contact your creditors for you.

We have an agreement in place with the majority of creditors, especially those that receive a large volume of payments from us, to pay them on a specific day of the month. This again is out of our control as these instructions come directly from the creditors.

At the beginning of your plan we would have given you an estimated timescales, which in your case was two and a half years, unfortunately we cannot guarantee that any interest and charges will be frozen and this could therefore extend the length of time it will take to repay your debts.

Many Thanks

I too have a DMP with PayPlan and am less than satisfied. I have been with them for 3 years on what was a 4 year plan. This has now got an estimate of 5 years not including the interest i am still accruing on the various credit cards. PayPlan do say they cannot guarantee interest rates are frozen and certainly in my case not one has. They consistently make late payments on my behalf which always results in a £12 missed payment penalty at least. They do not seem too bothered about anything and when you query they say trying contacting them etc. even though they are the ones making the errors on my behalf. The agreements they make with the creditors lapse and unless you keep on top yourself you then start the round of phone calls and letters from your creditors because they,(PayPlan) haven’t kept things up to date. I am tempted to leave but i don't know if that’s the right thing to do 3 years in. I used to swap cards around getting interest free transfers but since moving to PayPlan the majority of my payments purely go on interest and the debt is not decreasing very much at all. I have had some creditors offering me a much better deal if I remove the debt from PayPlan. I estimate another 7 years if i stay with them at this rate. I would not recommend anyone to PayPlan to be honest.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about the service you have received from Payplan. As you mentioned we cannot guarantee that any interest and charges will be frozen with a Debt Management Plan.

With regard to payment to your creditors, we have agreements with the major lenders who give us specific instructions on how they want us to make the payments to them. Some choose once a week on a specific day and other choose once a month on a specific date. We therefore do not have any control over any late payments fees that they may charge you, are we are simply following the instructions on the lender.

If you are concerned about ongoing charges, then you can either speak to your case officer or speak to the lender directly.

Many Thanks

“The best DMP company ever”

written by Kazndeyno on 22/01/2013

In 2009 I found myself struggling with debt and I initially started a DMP with a different company called Gregory Pennington which was a big mistake, however a friend/colleague recommended Payplan to me as they offer a free service, so I approached them in 2010 and I am so glad I did they took me through every step I maintained my payments and when something happened to my car making me fork out unexpected costs I explained to Payplan and they said not a problem to just make a token payment to each creditor via them so I was able to pay for my car, then after that luckily nothing happened and I can finally say I have completed my DMP today and what a relief, and to be getting a refund from my last payment also as the remaining debts only came to half my usual payment this was a bonus. Honestly these guys are fabulous my Personal Finance Manager was Rogerio Leitao and my case officer was Paula Pacheco and they have been amazing throughout my DMP, you can access your own online account to show payments and the progress, also what you have paid into your DMP and estimated balance, I am very happy. So thank you Payplan

“Be wary of Payplan's advice!”

written by on 26/11/2012

I was advised to contact Payplan by the staff welfare team of my employers. For my situation, which was owing over £50,000 following a house repossession and disastrous auction result, and having minimal assets accumulated since, bankruptcy was by far the best option. However Payplan seemed determind to get me to take up an I V A, which would have lasted much longer than the 3 year bankruptcy Income Payment Arrangement and with no certainty of finishing in 5 years, judging by other customers experiences of creditors refusing to forego interest. I feel the advice and information they sent me was tailored to set me on the wrong (IVA) track and my best interests were NOT their main concern.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about the service that you have received from Payplan. While we appreciate your comments, it is never our intention to make a client feel that are being pushed into a plan that is not suitable for them. Our job is to present the available solutions to our clients and let them decide the route in which they feel are the suitable for them and that they would like to pursue and we are sorry that you felt we did not do this for you.

Unfortunately we cannot assist clients with bankruptcy proceedings, we assist clients into plans such as a Debt Management Plan or in your case an Individual Voluntary Arrangement. An IVA is a legally binding agreement between you and your creditors, in an IVA you will repay a percentage of your debt over a fixed period of time, which is usually five years. After this time and upon successful completion of the IVA, the remainder of your debt is written off.

If you have any further questions, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many Thanks

Think carefully before you sign up for this because it does not end 3 months after your final payment. It could take up to a year for them to complete the paper work and everything else. You could be trapped in it for a year after your final payment. They dont have your best interest at heart. Please be careful.

Hi,

thank you for taking the time to leave a review of Payplan. While I understand your frustration about the ending of your IVA the current problem with issuing completion certificates is completely out of our hands.

It was decided that VAT shouldn't be charges on nominee and supervisor fees and therefore before we were required to wait for HMRC to issue a refund to us so that we could forward that onto your creditors.

We have recently held a variation meeting that will allow us to issue completion certificates without waiting for the refunds to be issued.

I initially got in touch with Payplan at the start of 2011 when I had a number of creditors and debts of over £16k. They have very helpful and understanding throughout my Debt Management plan, and 15 months later I am now totally debt free! Making my final payment to them last month. There is a helpful personalised website where you can log in and check the status and balance of your creditors, and they handle all calls and letters which really takes the pressure off. The service is absolutely free so compared to the other companies I'd looked at they're not rip-off merchants like some I'd seen. There are some negative comments about them with regard to interest and misleading people, but they do state that they can't guarantee to freeze interest & charges as it is at the creditors discretion. Also, they state that the 'Estimated Completion Date' is exactly that! An estimation based on the initial debt at the start of the plan. The terms team then contact the creditors periodically to confirm balances and update you to any changes accordingly. Initially my plan lasted two months longer than I was originally given as an estimate, but in the scheme of things if I'd never got in touch with them in the first place I'd still be in a spiral of debt.

Having read your comments tho, I am reassured that they will be able to help me out of a very sticky situation from which I can currently see no escape. Can you tell me whether you had to change your bank account, and if you did who did you find to be a good bank as a replacement. I think I will have to change my bank as my overdraft and my loan which is now one month in arrears are both with my bank, so I assume they will shut my accounts down, that is stop me from using it until the debt matter is resolved>> thanks for your advice sally

“DO NOT GO WITH PAYPLAN”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Stuart73 on 09/10/2012

I WOULD URGE ANYONE READING THIS TO THINK TWICE BEFORE GOING WITH PAYPLAN...IF MY EXPERIENCE IS ANYTHING TO GO BY, YOU WILL BE IN DEBT FOR A LOT LONGER THAN THEY TELL YOU YOUR'RE GOING TO BE. Five and a half years ago I was literally drowning in debt and could barely keep my head above water. I approached Payplan (on advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau) in order to pay back my debts as quickly as possible and agreed a repayment plan of just over 5 years. I was told (on many occasions) that I would be debt free at the end of this. They advise you not to cancel any cards/accounts. It has only been in the last 6 months that it has become evident (after some probing) that I would not be debt free at the end of the repayment plan due to the interest and charges accumulated (beyond my control). They constantly informed me that they would request all interest and charges that had been accumulated to be dropped at the end of the repayment plan, this has not happened and it appears they have no intention of doing so. The only reason I stuck with them was because of this assurance and the (perhaps naive) assumption that they would have had some clout with the creditors and would be able to do so. They do make token request to creditors during the plan but it is a footnote and is not really worth the paper it is written on and is rarely adhered to by the creditors (I have seen a copy of the document they send and can vouch for this). I have now finished my initial repayment plan with them (paying back over £20,000) and now find that they expect me to continue for another 2 years at least due to all the interest and charges accumulated (amounting to nearly £7,000) over the course of my repayment plan. Needless to say I am very unhappy with this and have approached the creditors myself (even though they tell you not to)to explain my predicament, with varying degrees of success so far. I feel I have been misled and deceived by them, I have found their staff to be unhelpful (constantly avoiding key questions) and the information they provide to be factually incorrect. In a recent meeting with the Citizens Advice Bureau I was informed that Payplan are paid a percentage of every payment I make by the creditors...so maybe draw your own conclusions from this. I have taken the honest route and have succeeded in paying back the debt I owed but cannot carry on struggling financially as I have been over the last 5 and half years (literally down to the last penny every month and having to beg and borrow to get by) and am determined not only to fight against the interest/charges debt but also to raise awareness for anyone approaching Payplan. Sadly, having done some research, I have discovered that there are quite a few others in the same predicament I'm in too. I have also noticed that most of the positive payplan reviews on this site tend to be from people who have just started with them..it would be interesting to see if they still had the same viewpoint at the "end" of their repayment plan.

Hi Stuart,

Thank you for taking the time to review Payplan and providing feedback. I completely understand your frustration at finding out that your debt wasn't paid back when you thought it would be.

We try extremely hard to get all interest and charges frozen on your accounts, however it is up to the creditor whether they do this or not and is therefore completely out of our hands. We try to make all of our clients aware of this as well as letting them all know that the 'debt free date' is only an estimation as it is based on the original figures that are provided.

Like you mention, we do receive a donation from some creditors, however these donations are completely separate from the payments that clients make to us, it is all explained here > http://www.payplan.com/how-are-we-funded.php

Many Thanks

Through a mixture of circumstances I found myself in debt. I tried to deal with it alone, getting nowhere while trying to live on nothing. It reached a point where I had to swallow my pride and ask for help. The constant worry was weighing me down and it was affecting my health. I'm so glad I did and took that step. Everyone I spoke to was lovely, calm and re-assuring. They made me feel human again and for the first time I saw light at the end of the tunnel. I have recommended Payplan to several friends who have all been delighted with their level of service. Anyone out there drowning slowly in a sea of debt, pick up the phone and start living again, Payplan is there to help you.

I found payplan on the internet and they have been really good. I have had the DMP for nearly 6 years - it's been really hard living on a small budget - but I have to remind myself that I am at least paying off the debt. Give them a go - and cut up the credit cards they are poison when you have no dosh!

“Please do not approach pay plan under any circumstances!!!”

written by on 04/09/2012

From the start of my journey with pay plan it was a disaster! My finical assessment was wrong twice which resulted in me being presented with debt management options that were not available. Then further to this I was advised to default on my payments to my creditors, having never done so before, and was told they would contact my creditors on my behalf. They did so after but I had to chase them for several week! By which time I had occurred unnecessary interest and charges on my accounts. Further more I discovered that they had missed one of my creditors (even thought I was told by one of MANY "financial advisers" at Payplan that they had done). This then led to the debt being given to a debt recovery service (which was a very unpleasant experience). I was then asked if there was any option to borrow money of a friend or relative to settle my debts. I did so and was told by pay plan if I had roughly 80% of the debt we could reach a settlement with my creditors but I need the money in my account as it is a very quick process. It took over a month! Payplan took so long in arranging the settlement (and it was really me who had to take action on the settlement offer as my settlements contact changed 4 times) by the time they offered 80%; my overall debt had grown which meant amount that the amount I borrowed was no longer 80% of my total debt.

Over all the service is poor. In fact I would go so far to say it is destructive! While I am sure they have must have some successes please do not be deceived by the fact they are a "charity". All this means is when the service they provide is poor and increases your debt there is NOTHING they or you can do apart from apologise and say "we will look into this and make a report". I have never written a review before in my life yet my experience of pay plan has been shockingly bad and has placed me in the worst finical situation I have ever been in! I approached Payplan to help manage my debt that I incurred while at university (as I was self funded) and as a result their "advise" and "help" my monthly outgoings have increased and the amount I owed increased. There are many other debt management charities out there (CAP are a good one) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR YOU OWN GOOD AVOID PAYPLAN!!!!!!!!!!! Final remarks - uniformed, unreliable, ineffective. Be under no illusion you are better off doing your own research than dealing with Payplan.

Have heard very similar comments from a lot of friends... Sounds like they know how to sell their services, but leaving many people with even more debts. Using the word 'estimate' gets them off the hook legalle. Hopefully Watchdog will make sure people no longer get fooled by their misleading advertising.

Thanks for the advice - I'll avoid this company .
(PS - Bet they remove your review, so keep checking it and put it in different places - they're doing the usual media trick of making sure good comments saturate the internet to dilute and hid the truth)

“End of term but still a further £2000 on the plan....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 02/09/2012

I have been with payplan for 6 yrs on a DMP which should have finished in August 2012. However because of interest added onto the account i still owe a further £2000. It is all over the website now that interest MAY not be frozen but 6 yrs ago i had nothing in writing informing me to keep in touch with my creditors as payplan DO NOT know whether interest is being applied to the account, i thought Payplan as third party would be informed !! I was then told the terms team would call the creditors at the end of the term to see if any of the interest could be wiped off, i called one of my creditors and all payplan had done was ask for a final balance. By offering to pay the bulk of the debt off they are willing to wipe off £400 !! I would therefore advise anyone to keep in touch with your creditors and ask for update s on the account and ask if interest is being applied as payplan WILL NOT have this information. Good luck and its a long road but worth it when you reach the end :)

Hi

Thank you for taking the time to review Payplan and for your feedback. I am sorry to read that you felt let down by the service that you received at Payplan.

As you say, interest may be frozen, and unfortunately creditors do not keep us informed of whether this has been done or not as we do not receive any statements.

Many Thanks
Gemma

I understand that now, i think it should have been communicated a little better than it was six years ago then i would have been aware.

Before i found Payplan i was working 2 jobs to 'try' to pay off my debts often living on just £10 a week as all spare cash was going to pay my debts which i accumulated from a failed relationship.... Payplan set my mind at ease & dealt with the creditors on my behalf... I often spent time alone crying due to the worry. I am coming to the end of my plan & I cannot thank the team enough!!! I def recommend Payplan to anyone struggling with debts, don't be ashamed if you are in debt!! Thats how i got into so much trouble i was too ashamed to admit i couldn't pay them... The best thing about Payplan is the flexibility & the efficiency... I found i had one debt that i had missed & Payplan dealt with it quickly & added it to my original plan... They are there to help you & not to judge!
