“Useful site but it's becoming way too commercial”

★★★☆☆

written by dunny_bear on 08/07/2013

First off, loving the idea of reviewing my favourite and not so favourite sites - go ReviewCentre! As for MSE, I've found this really useful, especially the community, for advice on managing my University debts. However, whilst the site started out as very much an independent affair, since it's sale, it's exceptionally commercial - especially their newsletters. I also don't understand Martin Lewis's recent tweets regarding politicians - perhaps he should stick to what he knows?

“Don't bother with the forums - they're abusive &...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mykal66 on 18/02/2013

OK: So i joined to ask advice after hitting a brick wall with a creditor only to have one of the self appointed GURUS of MSE forums flame me in no uncertain terms. I asked for advice to help with a difficult situation, not for judgment by the high and mighty minority sitting on looking down on the little people. Every piece of work martins does to help the little person at the bottom of various corporate mires is completely negated by these people and will only serve to make you feel worse about what is more than likely a delicate situation given you have registered with a site like this to ask for advice. I don't see the point in them to be honest, except to inflate their own inferiority complex by knocking the stuffing out of people already in a bad place. One of my responders (prompting this review) has replied to over 700 postings but only been thank around 40% of those and seems the type pf person who might take your wallet if she saw you unconscious on the street then blame you for being mugged in the first place. If you are in need of advice don't use the forums, as many other reviews have stated they are quite abusive and will only make you feel worse

Its the moderators. Anyone posting any common sense regarding debt and money is often banned. They are biased cretins and if like me you are managing your debt without the need to rip companies off that forums will have your blood boiling within minutes at the encouragement of fraud and deception they dole out as advice. No wonder the country is in such a mess with greedy feckless idiots effectively stealing money that doesn't belong to them.!

“Excellent Advise For Most People”

★★★★★

written by on 15/01/2013

This site is very good and contains alot of useful information. Read the site and apply it to your "current" financial situation. By doing so you will find it very useful. Those that don't, have no hope if im honest. Best section for me is the mortgage calculators as these save £1000's each year. This alone has already saved me 25k over a 3 year period. People with some level of financial understanding will be best suited to the site as you already know and are researching how to cut costs on everything. The recommended credit card for example "capital one" has earnt my partner and I £360 this year. We opened a account each and used the cards to pay for everything. You must make sure you pay the balance in full each month to gain from this. £320 with the Halifax bank switch. We have a joint account with NatWest. We then opened up 2 more accounts with NatWest then transferred over to Halifax leaving our joint account with natwest. We had no bills or standing order etc from the 2 new accounts with natwest. By changing bank we earnt £200 for doing this. Pay in £1500 per month and you get £5 per account totalling to £10 per month. Pay in £1500 into 1 account on the 3rd of every month then set up a standing order from the 2nd account to be paid into the 1st account on the 15th of every month. We do nothing but make free money and withdraw it at the end of a year. Thank you halifax. I have found the forums a little disappointing but it doesn't bother me. I wish you all good luck and dont give the banks your money.

“Best Advice and Lots of Usefull Info”

★★★★★

written by mjohno27 on 27/11/2012

I have used this website on many occasions and it's always steered me in the right direction. Whether it was finding the right utility company, car insurance, credit card, home insurance or even cheap calls abroad I've never found anywhere cheaper / with better deals after buying / getting the deal, having followed the advise on moneysavingexpert.com. What I especially like is that they don't try to break things down into little MTV generation style bits - they treat us like adults and give us all the facts there and then. Hopefully they'll keep up the good work :)

“No refund on knifes”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Metoyou on 05/11/2012

We made a purchase advertised on the money expert as a good buy, after waiting over a month for the knives they arrived Broken, we sent a photo of the damaged knives, and arrangements where made to collect, this has been over a month now with plenty of e-mails to the website, but no reply, and no refund so spent money with no good, terrible customer service. Would never use again, and can anyone tell us how to get this refund. What errors marked in red

“Disappointing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 04/09/2012

I wouldn't recommend people to join moneysavingexpert forums unfortunately, they are extremely cliquey with older users being very sceptical about new members, to the extent where they are viewed as a troll purely on their low post count. The forums, particularly the "family" board are a place for people to be highly judgemental and smug. I wouldn't recommend anyone in need of help to ask for it there. The benefits and disability boards are a huge target for trolling, often done by quite established members. Although many users do post very helpful advice across the board, the forums are quite unwelcoming to anyone in need of such aid. Moderation is a joke, extremely biased and users are banned without any explanation. Same as posts being edited or removed. Money Saving Expert forums do have their plus points, many but the behaviour of quite a majority of members and the staff is very disappointing for such a well known forum.

I thought it was just me and maybe I was going crazy haha but I've just left MSE forums because of this blatant trolling and smug so and so's who have NO idea what they are talking about. And 99% of them are on the disability forums lol!

I recently made my last post when asking a very legitimate question regarding compensation and how you work out claim amounts. They were so rude and condescending, with no knowledge about what they were saying and I finally put up a rude message to all of them and bust out of that hell-hole. I contacted the moderators to say the website has just become a massive trolling arena and they need to sort it out cos I'm leaving. Got a very smug reply off them too and wonder if they don't all just deserve each other.

Consumeractiongroup is way better, go there for actual advice and not people's useless opinions on whether or not you're wrong or right (as if they know!)

“Primus the Worst”

★☆☆☆☆

written by twilight333 on 24/06/2012

I moved to Primus because of the recommendation from this site - Big Mistake i made. I have been receiving calls many from abroad ( I am sure Primus gives the number out) it is ex directory and only Primus have my number. I rang Primus that I was upset by these and wished to change my number and did ask them if i would get charged and they said no because it was my first time. The number got changed and the following month they took out £15.00 from my bank account because i pay by direct debit. I rang and made a complaint and was told that it was taken out by mistake and they would refund me. The following 3 months they still took out my monthly charge without refunding me. I then cancelled my dircet debit and they charged me for the bill and still didnt show my refund. I rang them up again and said i want to cancel my contract which had expired a month ago. They said that when i changed my telephone number a few months ago i agreed to going into another contract. I did no such thing. I was told that i owe for this months bill and the money was refunded to me already i made the 1 months payment and i then checked all my statements on the internet and did not see no refund. I then rang up again and when i asked when did i get a refund i was told that it is going in this month for June, i said why did i get a bill this month in June to show that i am in credit and dont owe, he just said it wouldnt show and that i am £3.49 in credit, i asked that why was i charged £8 when i rang up earlier and the lady said i was paid the credit a few months ago. They are just trying to get money out of me. Never trust them, check your bills regular. I have now made a complaint on their website and have given them 7 days to reply. I hate this company they just want their money and dont care about their customers, the worst one i have been with and wouldnt even go with them if they were the cheapest.

“SITE OK FORUMS ARE A JOKE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/12/2011

The site itself has some good advise. The forums especially the ebay one with its so called EXPERT is a joke. Very cliquey with all the regulars deferring to each other and polishing one anothers egos. Genuine queries like why am i not doing well are greeted with My sales are great, you are not trying hard enough. Arrogant self important people not really interested in helping other people. Best avoided

“Good honest advise on savings!”

★★★★★

written by coolcalmingbreeze on 11/11/2011

I find Martin's advise on savings products very concise and hence informative. It's a good starting point for comparing the best rates for various types of accounts and what's currently hot on the market. I highly recommend his advice pages.

“Trolls with Bad Attitude”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/10/2011

It is a shame that a website that is based on a great idea is populated by reputation sapping trolls. Individuals with little better to do than jump on the bandwagon and punish brands left right and centre. Unless there is a deal in it or massive savings. The site(forums) is abrasive, unwelcoming and dominated by individuals with dangerous often callous attitudes. The rest of it is great, Martin is on the money. But his army of wannabes are trolls lurking in the depths of the forum, with nothing better to do with their time but nurture their own sense of importance. Get your advice from the upper aspects of the site, then move on.

I absolutely agree with this. Martins advice spot on. Went on the ebay site lorded over by some strange person, most of her advice is rubbish. She is a business seller who doesnt approve of free listings, then she does great out of the free listings on her personal account. then she has a business, knows everything, can answer nothing

“Censored”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Anthony E Miller on 20/09/2011

I was banned for starting a thread about parking and criticising their policies towards promoting the view that illegal parking on private land is not illegal. I had posted before on a different subject (the Westminster Council Flyering ban petition) under my own name (which is also my stage name) and they had not objected. I didn't plug my club on there but they insisted on inserting a link to it and posting up a lot of research about my other un-related posts all over the internet. I openly admit that I post on the internet a lot but I like talking to people - it's a good way to test material ... and also yes, it does help promote the club. However, MSE argued that as I was a promoter and an act then posting under my own name was it's self a form of advertising... I dont see how a forum on which consumers can say anything they like but business owners or anyone with a public profile is silenced can be logical. And I've since discovered that I am far from the only person to be banned from MSE. I thought too the level of research they'd done on me - they knew everywhere I'd posted on any news article all over the internet was sinister ... even though I make no effort to conceal my identity on the internet ...and I've since been contacted by several people who have similar stories of such over the top censorship. I also thought some of the comments from people who obviously work for Martin questioning my sanity and even deriding me simply because I might be a Crystal Palace supporter (actually I dont support any team) were frankly old fashioned charecter assasination of the type that Joseph Stalin would be proud of. I suggested to them openly that if they didn't like the thread I was happy for them to delete it if they thought it wasn't productive so why ban me for all eternity? Of course I could post annonymously but why would I agree to put free content on a site if I cant even do so under my own name and get some credit for authorship for the free content that I'm creating and they're generating turnover from - that doesn't seem very equitable to me. I understand the advertising ban but I wasn't really there to advertise. I dont think writing under your own name really counts as advertising? And how many consumers genuinely dont have any commercial interests. After a quick search of the interent I found I was not alone in being banned and ...after a while you start to question whether the site really is offering the best deals if there's so much censorship...? There's got to be a better, more flexible way of doing things? Also if no advertising is allowed why does the forum have a link to homepage option? And many people in their signoffs seem pretty much to be advertising to me...?

Mate they are dumb on that site, they have taken it over and ruined it and made it unpleasant for anyone to go there. I even contacted the moderator's who don't seem to care at all and rudely stated that whilst they couldn't close my account I should just stop posting on the forums if I don't like it. No matter I've been a member for so many years, who cares. Rude through and through. It used to be an amazing resource of advice and now it's a joke. Oh well, off to consumer action group instead, at least they still have real advice. I actually had people on MSE being so rude to me regarding my mental health and of all things suicide that another poster even reported them and email me privately to tell me not to go back and look at their comments because they had gone wild and there was no reason I should anger myself to read such ignorant rubbish. At least one person out of all those jackals was nice enough. The forum should be binned- it's out of hand. Better you join another online forum who can actually provide you with good, genuine advice.

written by Auser on 04/02/2011

Like others I've had the same issue of being barred from the site and accused of spamming without the administrators looking at my activity levels or anything other than the username I used. I've since tried to reassure them that I'm not spamming and happy to change my username but as quickly as they accuse you of doing something wrong they're incredibly tardy at reviewing their mistakes. An unfriendly and cliquey site unfortunately. I'll be steering clear!

written by on 28/01/2011

found the site to "advertise" certain other products that were more expensive than those found through other sites, if you pointed this out your post was removed and you get banned.

I feel that a once great site has become a failure of it's own success and are now trying to grab as much money as possible by stating items as "best buys" for companies they get paid the most money from.

as for no ads on the site, this is almost a complete lie, they get huge commissions and the products through their links are occasionally higher priced due to this.

Use what they says as a starting block and do what they're always suggesting and shop around, use other websites for comparison.

written by on 03/01/2011

I joined the forums to make a review on some headphones that appeared overly cheap. I was just asking if people thought the "deal" was real or not. I was made extremely unwelcome by a barrage of accusations of "spam", and when I asked why they were saying this they quoted my message and just wrote "spam" again... The thread was then deleted. I then made another thread and apologised if it appeared to be spam and attempted to remove any suspicions. I was accused of spam again by senior members, though a couple of nice people responded genuinely and helped me out, the thread was again removed.

Do NOT use the moneysavingexpert forums, the senior members and admins are extremely unwelcoming, I really do mean that. There are some nice people there I'm sure, though.

The site is kind of fine and it has helped me save money in some ways, although it's not as throughout as it can be, it does favour some products over others. The forum is a hell, there is a small number of users who genuinely wanna share their experience with others and wanna help others to save money but most people are nothing more than losers in their lives who clearly don't have a life but go online to attack people who have a legitimate question to ask. I have posted questions before and get no answer (which is fine)m instead I got attacked by some really rude people. I have also answered questions and got thanked for but also got attacked by some loser. Stay away from the fourm.

Mr Lewis is not comparing apples with apples.
He stated my bank debit card is a card from hell - Halifax, however does not mention anything about Barclays. Barclays is mor eexpensive to use abroad than Halifax..... He obviously favours Barclays out of all the Banks. He cost me over £10 extra. So much for a money saving expert....
