“Vile and obnoxious regulars”

★☆☆☆☆

written by pendragon_arther on 13/02/2023

There are those that have thousands of posts to their name suggesting they spend all day every day on the forums which is quite sad really. Instead of having a proper healthy life they prefer to spend every waking hour being snidy and trying to win points over others. Those that have been on the forums for many years have formed cliquey groups that use the 'thanks' button to support and win arguments. I would advise anyone to stay away from these venomous forums and enjoy life.

“Avoid the forum at all cost”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GustavoHatch on 31/08/2019

They really need to get competent moderators or shut down the MSE forum due to the really obnoxious keyboard warriors that use it. The overseas holidays harbours some of the most horrible trolls on any forum I have ever used. Moderators are a joke as they just allow the regular protagonists to spout their bile on unsuspecting contributors. One contributor has been banned on numerous occasions, but is allowed to return under a different user name to frequently abuse anyone who disagrees with their point of view. An awful website and I would advise that if you do really need advice on a certain subject, go to a dedicated forum and avoid this den of iniquity like the plague!

“So much for their "card" system”

★☆☆☆☆

written by debbiellayne on 14/04/2019

Beware if you're thinking about joining the forum. I've had an experience that mirrors the other reviews on here, so it's clear this has been going on for years and isn't something the website is interested in tackling. If you read their forum rules and FAQs you'd believe that you'd be protected from bullying and nasty comments, but the truth is you're not. If you bite back you'll be ganged up on and may end up being banned without warning or explanation, despite the fact their FAQs say that they have a "card" system, whereby you'll be contacted about your behaviour and if you ignore warnings then you'll be given a yellow card with an explanation. If you continue to break the rules you'll then receive a red card for serious or gross rule breaking, followed by being banned if you still do not abide by the rules. I was not given the benefit of this card system or an explanation - just banned for standing up to those who were harassing and bullying me and then told they did not have to provide me with an explanation and would not be. I also advised them I had mental health problems and they were rude and accused me of being aggressive and nasty. Horrible people, horrible site, horrible staff. If you want help with something and value your well-being, don't join this forum unless you want to risk being ridiculed and bullied.

“Too many snide trolls.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ralph296 on 15/11/2017

Some of the site is excellent but wait until you get to the forums, especially in the Household & Travel section. These boards are inundated with snidey and unhelpful trolls who consider their sole role is to belittle and snipe. This is not helped by the fact the boards are so many the few moderators can't handle the quantity of posts properly. This has put off many people who genuinely seek assistance.

“trolls show attitude by searching SEO victims”

★☆☆☆☆

written by hpuse on 27/09/2017

This site' forum is probably the worst pessimistic consumer forum you'd ever find. Most people are using the site to promote their products and services using search engine optimisation since the site is ranked high in google index. I would strongly advice anyone contemplating to join to stay put with their forums.

“Fast becoming a haven for far left liberals.”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Boyle270 on 27/08/2017

I spent many hours on MSE forums over the years, handing out advice, with some 20'000+ posts to my name. It used to be a good forum, you could be honest with people and ultimately help them get out of financial hell and hopefully save them some money. Recently though (August 2017) the forum mods have been politically leaning very much left of centre and happily banning long term members, the people who really made the forums so successful, banning them for no good reason, often just for telling the absolute unfiltered, un-sugarcoated truth. Criticise capitalism or consumerism, get banned. Criticise someone for being in debt and taking out yet more loans, get banned. Crack a slightly controversial (even with no swearing) joke, get banned. Quote a famous person who once said something else that was controversial (like Sir Winston Churchill), get banned. Criticise a govt run organisation, get banned. Criticise the BBC, get banned.

The easiest job in the world is to earn a living from scare mongering. They make huge profits from imbosiles that purchase from them or their advertisers that hold them on a pedestal. It is a business! Not a supposed service to the consumer.

the forums are full of bitter women and men stuck in unhappy marriages, doing a job they hate, so they try to take it out on people asking questions about credit cards, banks, etc.

“Barely deserves one star”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jaquanq187 on 29/10/2015

The forum is full of foul mouthed people whose only reason for existence is to hold their hand out for their entitlement - what they don't know they simply make up and post as if it was fact. This site panders and condones advice that borders on the fraudulent.

★☆☆☆☆

written by bwSullivan20 on 28/07/2015

The advice on the main site is, at very best, average and mostly rehashes of information available elsewhere. The forum is a disgrace. It is badly administered, often contains poor advice and panders to those looking for a free ride out of life.

“the home of trolls”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/05/2015

i expect trolls on youtube and certain other places on the net, but after asking serious advice about medical issues and the DVLA on the motoring forum, i was extremely disappointed to find the vast majority of replies were off topic, unhelpful, spiteful and seemed to attract others of the same kind to join in. despite initially ignoring the trolling and receiving support from like minded individuals, I found that later on it started again with people who simply did not read the previous posts and started their own off vile comments simply for their own amusement. i will NEVER use this site again. “EE Orange was top deal on Moneysavingsexpert ??”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ob1cnoby on 29/01/2015

I like many found the EE advice on moneysavings expert, and their review was glowing, ( it should be pointed out, that EE pay to be on moneysavingexpert and what is on offer, £132 pay up front, +30 with an offer of £100 cash voucher redeemable at Amazon after 70 days sounds great so far and thereafter £ 2-50 per month with all calls charges lower than BTs. also free weekend calls from Fri midnight to Sunday midnight Sounds too good to be true so lets all join (lets NOT - just read on) My first bill arrived at £38-11, with after hardly ever using the phone and was not the 2-50 I was expecting plus approx £4 bill, (1p per min,BT -Plusnet and many more but turned out to be approx 10p as they (EE_Orange) is waht they charge- + add ons of 15p for every connection and even 9p per minute thereafter which also includes for 0844 numbers etc etc which are normally normally 1p with BT It appears they were charging me at top BT charges, of 10 p per min, not the lowest,(1p) or even midrange on anyones elses scale, all of which unexplained in their initial add on MSE- (I downloaded it for safe keeping, and would advice anyone esle to do the same-luckily I did, as the misleading add vanished shortly afterwards. I have complained both to EE (Orange) and MSE many times and still I am waiting an reasonable answer.(lots of emails are 'noreply- and bounce back- Whats that really means is they know waht they are doing, and wont answer, and while they arent answering your mails that have been blocked, they are stealing your money by robbing your account I then downloaded BT charges, (different packages of course) and in the EE blurb it states - and I quote (Call costs Weekend Calls are included in the 2-50pm (ie free) and states others slightly less than BT (another lie - see 0844 nos above) I and most others would say they should be around 1p per min, as this is Bts low price bracket, and not 10p per min as being charged by EE which is BTs highest price bracket. ( I could ring almost anywhere on the planet for around 2p max, ) Whereas, if I tel my neighbour on EE costs are 15p connection- 10p per min therafter, and if you stay your on the phone as I was on one call for 30 mins (thinking EE were cheap) this would amount to £3 call costs and £3-15 with the additional 15 connection charge. (have a nice day ??) Now in the first month, if your thinking as I did, EE is an honest fair company (after reading their add on MSE) EE is cheap so I didnt worry, so you make make 2-3 such calls per day, this would roll out at approx £10 per day x 30 days =£300 per month. according to their add on MSE, this is a great deal a 5* buy When I called them I was told they charge 15p just for any single connection on all calls. I then went on to ask them on their 0800 number, what did they charge me on the on 0844 numbers which BT charges at local rate of 1p, With EE or Orange they charge 9p per minute + 15p connection charges on these calls - so your 24p down before you speak on a call that costs 1p with BT then 9p per min thereafter - what a conning company. This is after declaring on MoneySavingExpert, that their prices are cheaper than BTs I would strongly advice anyone not to go near either EE or Orange (same company) in fact ban them. Get your friends to read this, dont rely of using moneysavingsexpert as they are using this simply to get a cut without scruples (we all have to live i know) as when I rang EE they denigh even putting the add on MSE, and claim moneysavingsexpert have themselves put this add up and simply pocket a percentage - This again I find untrue as i had to enter a Link Code when going with EE and as such they should know that MSE are gettinga cut, as its directly linked to their site, and should bare the responsibility of advertising in this way, just for the sake of making a percentage . I tried to contact moneysavingsexpert many times and ways, and they too are 'unavailable' ie mails bounce back- phones unavailable etc So it seems that both companies basically tell lies, and when asked for an explanation, dont have open lines' of access, either by email or direct telephone, (mind you this would cost a fortune on EE / Orange rates) I even left message on MSE site - through different outlets (no response) I have now reported them to the Ombudsman for deliberately lying with misleading information, companies like this should not be allowed in business with such misleading jargon coupled with entrapment. After many letters and phone calls they have still have yet to reply to me, all I get from the accounts operators is, "We will talk you through your bill' ( DUURRR- as if I cant read ?? condescending to say the least, I can see they overcharged me, do I want someone to say it to me ??. COOLING OFF PERIOD There is such a thing as a cooling off period with normally is 14 days which they abuse as well. The scenario is this with all their clients. You sign up with them as I did mid December 14, your 1st bill will not arrive or be taken from your account till mid Jan (ie well out of the 14 days cooling off period) You are given an account name and number, which I only managed to access once, and this was 'pre bill' I have tried several times since, and this in my oppinion deliberatly 'misdirects' you to a mble phone account ( I dont have a mble account woth them) like many others (please Google) as it throws you into entering your mobile number- not your account, hence you cant check your account till you see a hole in your Bank account statement. You then make many attempts in all directions to resolve this, and basically they dont want to know about your problems don,t ring back- or answer emails, this of course can go on for months and I am sure does, hence you pass any 'cooling off period" by some distance and can be stuck with a 12 months contract, due to their lies and devious actions.Without doubt this whole scenario is contrived Now in my estimation a normal household would be around £100+ per month at their rate (EE) against their claimed cheaper than BT charges ?? All I wanted was an explanation of why they are conning me and are using the highest possible rates without declaring so in their advert on MSE as I from the tone of the add was expecting the lowest charges In effect they are charging 10 times the rate of BT, plus all the connection charges involved above on top. I like others were lead to believe this was a good deal and should they would be using the cheapest plan, like everything else in their add (quote from add 'Call Costs, Weekend Calls to landlines are included, Others are slightly less than BT) what a bunch of liars as it doesnt say anything close to the truth in their blurb - or using such high charges- it should be upfront in their initial add- and its not. I telephoned EE today and they offered me 'another plan,' which I promptly told them what they can do with it, as I am not taking any plans out with such a deceitful and dishonest company. Needless to say, I have cancelled with them - and will be looking for another provider, albeit the chances of getting my £162 initial cost + £6 router, +£38-11 rip off out of my account looks a bit grim. If I have to lose this, yet warn others off of this it may be money well spent, why do we have such people in companies thinking up such devious underhand ideas, At one stage I was asked why I didnt go directly to EE or Orange website to check out the details, my response was as they advertised with moneysavingsexpert, and were collecting vast amounts of money via the link, each link needed and EE MSE code, they should be responsible for making sure that their adds at MSE were true, and not misleading, as they were profiting by it. They should be upfront with such important information, not hide it in links or preamble Wouldnt it be a better world if people were straight and honest - mind you finding one in EE or MSE surely is an impossiblity Hope this is of some use to someone- avoid EE which is a subsidiary of Orange Google EE complaints and my my what do you see

“they pay Children to abuse others on their forum”

written by RebekahCarr142 on 28/01/2015

STAY away from the MSE forum as it is clear that the CHILDREN than run the forum pay other CHILDREN to insult and abuse users that don't agree with them. It is clear they must pay the abusers as reporting them, they forum team never do anything about it apart from give you wrong for being a victim and reporting the abuse.

what a JOKE, This is a reply to reporting those abusing me, it seems they can abuse me as much as they want and if i keep reporting them i will get a PPR for being the victim. this clearly shows they are being paid by MSE to be abusive

"As I have told you numerous times before, please ignore these users in question and report the posts you believe to be abusive or defamatory. As a forum we protect everyone's right to speak freely, as long as they don't break forum rules, as such we cannot remove most of the posts you report to us. Please think before you send the reports whether we can take action or not. If this carries on being a resource issue for the forum team, we will have to consider the posting privileges of those involved.

Kind Regards"

“lose the forums”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/05/2014

great website, and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Martin Lewis, but his forums are populated by little sad pathetic people who have been embittered too much by their debts, so they talk down at all newcomers who didn't yet make all the silly mistakes they did about money, marriage and job. Poor little people.

“illterate bunch of senior reviewers ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/01/2014

If you want to to see the most illerate,ill-mannered, low-worth section of our society who uses internet, pay a visit to their forums. Post a few thread and pretend you are in trouble and need help. You will then see their senior members true colours. They solely exists for giving and receiving thanks and abuse anyone who challenges someone or attempts to make a point, especially if you are newbie. It appears to me that moneysavingexpert forums primary objective is not to help people, rather target and promote specific products and services using Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) technics. Avoid their forums at all cost in you have an ounce of decency.

“Emails good - forum...abusive!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/01/2014

I believe MSE has some great hints about well how to save money, what's going on in the world, things to look out for but go on the forum and expect abuse! And it's like their all lovin' cousins too! Not too bright after the incestual breeding that brought them into the world and no plans to stop doing it. Are they there to help? Absolutely not! You get your trollers coming through to insult you, others "Thank" them for it. If you say anything back, as a newby, they'll gang up. And the moderators see this and then comment more on you for responding than the incest misfits that started with you. If you don't believe me, go on there - try to discuss something - maybe start a post or join one. Sooner or later, one will do it. You can then click on their name, look up past conversations and you will see how often these arguments ensue with them and how often someone, not of the cousins' family of course, asks then to step out if they can't help!

“reclaiming ppi success!”

★★★★★

written by claudio2656 on 10/11/2013

checked out site a year ago but took no further action to reclaim ppi. 4 weeks ago, visited your site and decided to contact the bank directly thanks to your telephone contact numbers. After a brief conversation with the bank who I found incredible helpful (Lloyds)I received a simple questionnaire to complete, which was followed up with a telephone call. Saturday 9 November received £4,609.59 in full and final settlement...... It was so incredibly simple!.Plus I saved 30% by not using these independent PPI companies. Martin, thankyou for all the advise on your site.

“I was shocked when I revisited after not going on to...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Smarmasour on 18/08/2013

I was shocked when I revisited after not going on to the site for some time to see how nasty it has become. Someone posts a problem ? Let's all make sneering remarks about how WE WOULDN'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE. Someone has an opinion contrary to their mutually enabling hivemind ? Ban them. Basically if they can't bully you then they will ban you. What a load of supercilious and arrogant idiots on there ! I doubt they've noticed a decline in people posting (YET!). But you can bet they'll notice it eventually when they have to resort to bullying each other. What fun it will be to watch that - I'll get the popcorn in. I bet their new overlords would be interested in how they are successfully destroying what was once a decent site. There are SO many better alternatives, as mentioned in the countless other threads on here who also find the Money Saving Expert website obnoxious. I've cancelled my email subscription (I don't particularly want a sad curmudgeon to profit from me, which is what he is doing). I bet when his wife dumps him after a certain amount of time (depending on her game plan) it's going to destroy him to give away half of his money. The internet is littered with forums for the disabled and those with mental health problems, people on low incomes and benefits, innocents who've been robbed etc. all comparing stories about how badly they were treated on the forums of MSE. One poor woman in debt was told she'd be better off killing herself. I worry about people, really I do.

Gigi72's Response to Smarmasour's Review

Written on: 08/01/2014

I found it too. Rude, rude people - and those that 'Thank' them and the volunteer people who I guess, moderate it, psh - don't do a thing about it, seem to be more critical of you for saying anything back and are fairly rude as well. The advice is even rude - it isn't advice, it is a criticism. If you don't like it, then go somewhere else (that's the advice to your problem, not their advice on their behaviour). I am glad I am not the only one to find this!
