firstly this is the only sat nav I have used, so it would not be fare to to compare with others, only I can say is having used this for 4 years it has been reliable, until recently the touch screen is playing up, but using it i have found only one thing i find that could be better is it does not allow you to put a full postcode only the first part then you need to put in street, or place name, and to start using sat nav from off mode, takes a long procedure before you can actually get to put address in.
othe than that i can not knock it, if you can cope with slow to get to use and not being able to put full post code in then i enjoyed using it.

It is my first navigation system. I own it since 2006. After 4 years still running ok.
One problem with it is that the update maps cost a fortune. But this can be avoided by uploading IGO8 on it.
Another problem is when you pass through a tunnel. After exiting it will take a few good minutes before it will reactivate the GPS reciver.
From my point of view it is everything you need from a GPS system. If you update the maps, or intall IGO8 you will be satisfy.
I bought the device for 400 Euros which was very expensive, but at that time it was a powerful device, and it is the same today.
I will recommend this device.

Bought this unit from Tesco Direct for clearance price of £79.
Not bad performance straight out of the box - good European coverage but the maps were over 2 year old.
Checked with Tesco & Becker but no updates seemed available.
The best thing about the 7934 is that it runs WINDOWS CE 4.2.
Effectively this meant it was a mobile-PC.
With a little research I found several YOUTube videos & links to newer maps & apps which you can run directly on the Becker via the 2GB SD Card.

This is probably the best vfm gadget I've bought to date!!!
If you can still get hold of one...

I think this becker traffic make and model is the worst machine I have ever seen. It does not accept post codes, it doesnt accept certain road names and there are never any updates. I would not reccomend this make to anyone.

i have the same issues with this sat nav. Very slow to find GPS, wont recognise new roads, takes you miles out of your planned route, cant update.
There are better on the market, only saving grace for me is that it was a gift, otherwise it would have gone back to the shop!!

Bought the Becker Traffic Assist HighSpeed 7934 for a friend's 30th birthday, as she has only just passed her driving test. She found it easy to use, great having the 'avoid motorway' option for more timid drivers, or avoiding traffic jams. WMA player is pretty cool addition as with the picture viewer - totally pointless in my opinion but cool none the less. 8 - 10 for performance 10 - 10 for value!

“This is a very well made GPS unit. I didn't even have...”

★★★★★

written by on 15/12/2008

This is a very well made GPS unit. I didn't even have to open the instruction book. Charged it via the USB port on my computer, turned it on, and quickly added an address and it was guiding me within minutes. VERY user friendly. I like that it just shows the street I'm traveling on or need to turn onto, along with landmarks. Less cluttered screen makes it easier to navigate. I especially like that the voice warns me I need to turn in 1 or 1/2 mile, at 600 feet and when I should start turning my wheel. The lighting is the best I've seen in any GPS unit. Before I purchased I read the reviews and have found the negative ones to be unfounded. Its way better than I expected, considering the low cost. One review said the battery charge didn't last long but I haven't found that to be true. I think the Germans did a great job of engineering this device! Mount was easy to set up and adhere to my dashboard and is sturdy and easy to deal with. Holds the unit just where I want it and it's easy to put the unit on and take it off.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to buy an affordable GPS. I can't see spending any more as this has everything I want. I feel lucky to have come across this incredible value the first time I bought a GPS. Now that I've been using it for a while I can't imagine how I got by without. I use to get lost or spend a lot of time dealing with directions and now it's effortless. This is one of the best purchases I ever made. Way to go Becker!

VI have been unable to charge the unit from two different car cigarette lighters. I bought a mains charger from Becker through the web site and this kept it going about three hours. Recently however the mains charger mysteriously blew up.
Charging from computer USB outputs takes a very long time. Not really practical for every day use.
Not utterly useless but its inability to charge from the car battery greatly reduces its effectiveness.

“Decompression error was presented with POI search for...”

★★★★☆

written by wabutter on 24/08/2008

Decompression error was presented with POI search for Orlando, Fl. in first week of ownership. Out of box bug in software I think. Tech support suggestions of reloading maps to SD card and this process failed repeatedly. Discovered on my own that a USB 2.0 card reader was required to complete the new download of the version 1.0 maps. This finally took care of the decompression error. I purchased the Euro Map SD card and used the system in the UK from London to Cambridge. Worked flawlessly on roundabouts and general routes. There are many POI references in the display. For instance, just a hamburger icon is displayed for the fast food restaurant, there is no way to find out what kind it is. address or phone. Same for Gas Stations. Other GPS systems will provide details at a touch of the screen. Overall I would say the device works well and was a good value. I typically don't need MP3 player or a picture viewer. I would like better portability between the car and my motorcycle. Accessories for mounting to a motorcycle other than a 1 inch handle bar do not exist. Becker needs to expand its vision for the US market.

First GPS I've owned. Bought primarily on price, but checked reviews before committing. Also influenced by the German engineering.
Have used it for a month and it has performed flawlessly! I found it very easy to use with little need for reading the manual.
I'm not an early adopter and usually buy middle of the road products. Can't see any reason to put a lot more money into a unit to get a bigger screen and sexier graphics. This more than meets my needs at an entry level price point. Give it serious consideration & happy travels.

written by eastmand411 on 14/06/2008

The Becker Traffic Assist is filled with features, but the updates are slow to come and the response from the contact location could be weeks at best. It is frustrating waiting and then the responses are not what you expect. I can say, I did have the Decompression Error, and after contacting the company, about a week later I had the instructions in email. Below you will see how to fix the decompression error. If you follow these steps, you will be back up and running in no time.
1. connect the Becker Traffic Assist 7934 unit via USB cable to your computer. (is ActivSync already installed on your PC ? if not, follow the prompts to do so and set up a partnership) or insert the SD card into a card reader.
2. insert the backup DVD and start the DVD
3. choose "English"
4. choose "Transmit maps"
5. choose "North America" then choose transmit maps again.
6. a window will pop up: "transmit via card reader" or "transmit via Activesync"
(via card reader takes 20 min. / via ActivSync direct into the unit takes 40
Minutes or more)
7. a window pops up: "Your memory has insufficient space for the chosen map.
However, the "Hawaii.map has been found on the memory card. Would you like to delete "Hawaii.map"?
8. click "NO"
9. when "North America" shows up please click "YES"
10. then the Map will be reinstalled to the SD card (you will see a window with the installation time)a message will pop up when it is complete, then the problem should be solved.

I think there is a firmware or software glitch with my Becker sat nav. I purchased a second unit before the problem occurred in the first one.
Now the second one occasionally works (with the "decompression failed" message once in a while), the first unit after being turned on at some point will arrive at the decompress failed message.

written by J0ngru on 25/03/2008

I have used various units (Garmin, Navman, Tomtom) and this one is by far the worst. To load maps you have to store them on a little SD card which occasionally it won't read from. It regularly behaves like a disobedient computer telling me that it has performed an illegal operation and must close, or that it cannot decompress its data. I suppose mine might be a defective one, I don't know, but everything about it annoyed me so I decided to simply buy a different make which, unlike this, worked from the moment it was switched on.

You have to press the little reset button on the bottom of the Becker Traffic Assist after loading your MP3 files for it to recognize them. Shame they don't tell you that in the manual.

Bought my Becker Traffic Assist today. Never had one before but the price was such that I just couldn't pass it up. Still not sure how to set it up properly. I was in a hurry and set it up to get me to a place north of Raleigh, NC from Charlotte, NC. I was pleasantly surprised. It more than met my expectations! I would highly recommend this product. I paid $129.00 and with the text to voice it led me right to my destination. I would have gone of course at least twice if I trusted the road signs more than the becker 7934, but the voice told me just exactly what to do and when.
