“Good food, excellent service”

★★★★★

written by on 14/05/2013

Having been to the Square and Compass a number of years ago and had a disastrous meal we had vowed never to return. However, we started to hear good things said about the restaurant/pub and thought we'd give it another try. So glad we did. The food was very good, the prices not silly and the service was excellent. We would go again and recommend it highly to our friends.

“Kindergarten”

I have visited this pub over the years and had some pleasant times there so was pleased to see that it had reopened. Firstly concerning what they can control the food was barely above average so that was a disappointment. Secondly - and I understand that this is difficult to administer - but we were placed on a table next to a crowd of children -whose parents were eating in the restaurant! It beggars belief that people expect the pub staff and other diners to look after their children! Please make sure that diners dine WITH their children so that their evening is as spoilt as ours was.

“buzzing again”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/11/2012

The Square is buzzing again and the new team, new look and great beer have rescued this fine country pub. We have eaten there five times since the re-opening and the food is definitely a step above the usual pub grub in terms of quality. For example, the burgers (my favourite) are really juicy and taste of steak - apparently they are made from locally reared beef. Guest beers like Mary Jane from Ilkley Brewery and Copper Dragon from Skipton keep me happy and there is a vast range of bottled beers/lager plus a good selection of wines. Sunday lunch(rated best ever by my brother) is very popular so you need to book or arrive early. We are already booked in for a pre Christmas dinner and the menu certainly looks good ... judging from the food we have had so far I'm looking forward to another success.

“Small portions, overpriced but good atmosphere.”

★★★☆☆

written by Hungryhorace on 18/11/2012

No surprises as far as the food was concerned, pub food jazzed up a bit and carefully arranged on large plates. Vegetables and salads are extra and are needed to pad out the small portions. However we were saved by the exceptional quality of the beer. Will call again when the special offers start.

“very disapointing”

★★☆☆☆

written by halifaxpete on 03/10/2012

The Square & Compass is a very nice pub the seating is very cumfy, the decore is great the beer is great. The food is average but the portions were small and expensive and all veg was extra. The reason this pub has not done well over the last few years is because there has been no good old fashion pub grub like steak and ale pie, scampi and chips and decent deserts,it also could do with a £10 two course sunday carvery with decent portions it can be done and is been done,no more fancy food and fancy prices,if you want fancy food go into Harrogate. If you keep this up you will go down the same road as the other owners. There is a lot of passing trade out there and if you do it right you will be very busy and make a name for yourselves, back to basics. The staff were very good.

“New Management”

★★★★☆

written by timstokes on 19/09/2012

First visit since takeover and what a difference. Service and food very good and value for money. Especially recommend the spare ribs I had, lot s of them and brill BBQ sticky sauce. Had given up on the place because of better local competition but will definitely be back. I hope they keep their current high standards but the problem then will be getting a table.

Called today (31st January 2012) for lunch and it was closed. Called last year, closed again. Don't think I eill bother again. The banner on the roadside seems inviting. Something wrong somewhere.

“fine food,a bit of class.”

★★★★★

written by on 11/09/2011

Sunday lunch, travelled from Bradford on our way to Chester-le-Street nd passed the sign and for the first time thaght we would give it a try. entered main door and was given a nice greeting and told to pick our own table, a nice touch as not everyone likes standing and, being given the impression that the place place is full. a visit to the "gents" is worth going just to see how clean and classy it is, the place made me feel relaxed from entering to leaving, the meals were ready within 15 mins, Now the main point of the review! apart from eating at home ( I have to say this ) me and the wife agree that this was the best Sunday lunch to date.I can be happy if the food is on the fare side but my wife is another, and rather rather harsh critic, never in 43 years has she said, "Thats the best Sunday dinner I have ever had" thanks for a treat that was unexpected. colin

“A Pheonix rising from the ashes”

★★★★☆

written by YorkshireTyke on 10/09/2011

I ate here with my wife on Sept 9th 2011 . We were welcomed by Helen and enjoyed the refurbished tables and chairs which are VERY comfy. We ordered a Ceaser Salad with a side order of chips which were excellent, obviously the new chef has take this resteraunt to his heart and we followed this with sticky toffee puding - - -again really nice. This eating house has seen some "Dark days " in the past but is now well worth a visit. Its a Pheonix rising from the ashes.

“This pub is a prime example why so many pubs are...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by crownclegg on 28/11/2010

This pub is a prime example why so many pubs are closing down. Waited 1 1/2 hours before the food arrived a standard Sunday beef menu with Yorkshire pudding - The first plate served was cold, the Yorkshire pudding had been out off the oven for a minimum of 10 minutes, as it was cold to the touch, carrots served were not cooked at all. Complained to waitress - the 2nd plates served the beef was sub standard fatty and overcooked, the Yorkshire pudding was burnt to a black something. The pub was 3/4 empty due to bad weather [started snowing while we were there] - the staff were running around [headless] and to pay had to wait another 20 minutes [paid in cash]... There are three fireplaces in the oub, at the time we went 1 was light and others laid out with all but not light result a cold pub. The flowers on the tables had seen better days say 2 weeks ago... Sorry but for what the price were and that it was a set sunday menu card - it would be better to close the place...

★★★★★

written by angela hart on 30/09/2010

Since this pub has been under new management (approx 2 months) and has recruited a new Head Chef (past month), we have noticed a HUGE improvement, particularly with the delicious home-cooked food. Everything is cooked from scratch - the gravy, the custard and the soup we had (vegetable) was excellent value and served with warm French bread. Apparently you need to book in advance for Sunday lunch, as this is particularly popular with both locals and visitors. Don't be put off by past trips to this pub - that is all in the past.

Downside? Fairly quiet on a mid-week lunch, but popular in the evening and weekend.

written by on 27/03/2010

Menu very limited no special board. Mash was off considering most things came with Mash. Was offered Cumberland Sausage with chips. Food was nice as a started not a main course because of that food slightly overpriced. The best part was the cheese board but grapes, celery and apple was missing. Staff looked board but never came down to see were we ok. On a Saturday night only us was eating and 8 locals drinking rest was empty. Was not a pinch as it was 8 year age.

We hadn't booked on Mother's Day, but turned up with 6 adults and 4 children (all under 7) and enjoyed a delicious Sunday Lunch, with homemade food, which was excellent. We all enjoyed it and are going again soon. Kids were made very welcome and allowed to use the function room adjacent to play in and were even given balloons.

The only criticism is that service seemed a little confused, all young staff, without much of a system. It was not very busy, especially for Mother's Day. Food great and we were in no rush.

written by on 08/03/2010

Having eagerly waited for the reopening of the Square we were in harrogate to see our son and had heard through the grapevine that it had reopened. We ordered a large dry wine 0verpriced at £5.10 and a pint of bitter that was cloudy. My chicken bagguette was about4 inches long and very chewy but my wife had the ham and brie which she enjoyed, needs a lot of work to get it back to what it was 7 or 8 years ago. Pleasant surroundings but why the doors on a dark and dingy restaurant?

Called in to try after new management had taken over. Quiet but had plenty of choice where to sit. Food delicious, my boyfriends steak was described as the best he had tasted in ages. Chips looked home made and were perfectly cooked nice and crispy but fluffy on the inside. My butternut squash was beautifully presented and tasted divine. Will definately go again.
