“packet loss and slow speeds”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 15/04/2012

Broadband service from be was fantastic I had been a loyal customer of Be's for over 5 years, things started to go wrong last year with network slowdowns, outages and high latency and packet loss over the last 6 months, resulting in stuttering performance of iplayer on low quality intense buffering of youtube in the evenings and high latency which reduced online gaming performance (abject failiure of onlive). and all of which have persisted with only small impovements for short periods of time. With the announcement that they don't plan to offer fibre connections this year, in my opinion it's clear to me they haven't invested in their network infrastructure and cannot cope with the levels of usage they see now on their network let alone a 5 fold traffic increase fttc would give them. my advice stay clear.

“Don't Be There”

★★☆☆☆

written by repwoc on 23/03/2012

After fantastic performance and service for over three and a half years out of four they have really gone down hill. Web pages won't load, pages freeze and after runing pingtest.com I found that I was suffering from very high packet loss. After blaming me and my equipment for weeks (1 x windows 7 Laptop, 1 x vista Laptop, 1 x Ipad2 and a PS3) all suffering tech faults at the same time they admitted they had equipment problems but only on the day I requested my MAC Code. If only they could be honest at the start it would have saved me hours of time trying out all their ideas to fix the problem, they knew was theirs. BE WARNED?

If uou are thinking of joining BE one word of advice Don't ! I have been a be customer for 12 months now. When I joined thye were a great company. They were even different from many of the other big names in broadband supplies. The last 3 month they have gone hill so much. Slow loading web pages, disconnections. Their customer service is useless they actually blame the customer for their poor structure. I have applied for a MAC code and am leaving asap.

“Poor reliability and poor customer service”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 20/02/2012

I have been with BE for 6 years and it really hurts me to write this review. These guys used to be one of the best out there. Great speeds, unlimited downloads, reliable and with great customer service. Speeds and download limits are still good but the connection is now so unreliable that I have no choice but to go elsewhere after 6 happy years. Believe me, I gave them a good chance to sort themselves out. I didn't want to change ISP and have a lot of loyalty for BE. The service is now unusable at least 3-4 times per month and last week I had no service at all. The customer service centre - now based in India on poor quality line - blames all the problems on hardware issues with their suppliers. Sorry guys, but I need a reliable internet connection and it's time to move on. Was lovely knowing you while it lasted!

“bethere... when it works!!!!”

written by MonkeyNutz on 14/02/2012

We are on "be lite" (now known as be value), which is an upto 12mb service, although really you don't get more than about 5.5 mbps where we live. Pretty reliable, however always seems to disconnect for a few seconds a couple of times a day, usually just after midnight, and speed can sometimes be a little erratic with pages which should open, instantly failing to open with a "connection problem" but when you press refresh they immediately open! Bizarre! Recently the last 4 days (although could have been happening longer with some of the symptoms we have experienced) the service has been utter pants, with pages (if they open at all) sometimes taking in excess of 30 seconds to open!!! The customer service is good, however I'd STRONGLY suggest holding the phone at arms length as the customer service people are based in Poland and tend to speak VERY LOUDLY and in not very good English, although to be fair they are prompt in calling you back (with the same response repeatedly as they don't seem to talk to each other)! All in all, be COULD do better, but for the money it's generally ok!

“Rapidly becomiong the new AOL”

★☆☆☆☆

written by articice on 30/01/2012

Was a great company, quickly going downhill and becoming like a large corporation. Presently with bethere, but leaving within the week hopefully. The below was a review by a fellow bememeber """"As an aside: Speaking of comparisons, when I'm behind on my payments BE let me know they'll just take it out next month, whereas BT send me letters demanding payment and threatening service restriction virtually from the outset. Charming. Back on topic: Overall a very pleasant indie company with a relaxed work ethic and a reputable service. I actually came here to see if there were any rival services which I was willing to risk signing up for, but since nothing stood out I'll be staying with BE for a little longer. Here's to being able to get on and worry about the important things in life, rather than if your internet is going to behave or not.""""" sadly the company no longer behaves like decent indie guys, every since O2 took it over, there service has deteriorated rapidly. The website has huge problems and as a result refused to accept my new credit card details. How did bethere react, they sent me an email threatening to send bailiffs round my house for the months bill. Disgusting behaviour, the problem was entirely due to their website being written incompetently to begin with, that it refused to remember its members updated payment details (even though it gave the message details had been updated). They knew that was the case for months, admitted it, that it was problem they were fixing for at least the last 6months. Yet they still threatened to send the bailiffs on me for a measly months bill. After i paid the bill and demanded my MAc code, they said they sent it. Nothing, they actually hadn't sent it. Complained again, this time they sent it, but offered me 2 months free if i stayed on with them for another 12months as an apology. So i thought maybe i should give them a second chance, so code gets cancelled. Now they tell me, if i accept the 2months free, my service charge will go up to the new rate of £20 per month, which means in effect i will actually be paying them £60 more over the entire year, even after the 2months free. Talk about being gobsmacked, a 2months free that actually costs you £60, maybe they have been smoking too much pot, or more likely ever since they were taken over by O2 the corporate suits and lawyers have started manipulating condescendingly their customer base. When i first started i was paying a premium for bethere, but i was getting the service i was paying for, now i get 3rd world country trickster style service for a premium price. Frankly if i am going to be treated like dirt, i might as well pay dirt cheap prices. So this unhappy customer is looking to move and take all of his friends and colleagues with him. given that when bethere started i got them over 2 dozen customers (who probably then got them many more), maybe I'll be able to persuade a few dozen to leave with me, here's hoping i can, as an *-u to bethere.

“Great service and amazing customer service”

written by simonlondon on 01/01/2012

I've been with Be There for 6 years and never had a problem until last night (01.01.2012) where my service was dropping, when I called them they were extremely helpful, not only did they solve the problem but they also followed up and made sure it was still working. I dealt with a guy called Victor who was so helpful.

written by steven2012 on 28/12/2011

I have now been using BE for 9 months since moving home. After an awful experience with BT previously I was sure not to go back with them and switched to BE. It is more expensive than many others but I have never had issues in the last 9 months and only had to talk to customer services once, at the very beginning during the setup phase. They were extremely friendly and helpful.

“Hidden Cancellation Costs... Beware”

★★☆☆☆

written by gwaterhouse85 on 30/11/2011

Whilst you are with Be, they are not a bad service provider. However, when you come to cancel, they will hit you with hidden charges such as an express termination charge and charging you for routers that have broke during the time you were with them and have since disposed of, as you can no longer return it to them. We were with Bethere for 2 years, and the router broke after 14 months, so outside of the 12 month contract, so we replaced it. However, we didnt think to keep the original router, and we are now being charged for it, even though it had broke. I'd steer clear of them personally, unless you were planning on being with them for life... which is some commitment!

“Consistantly good”

written by on 30/10/2011

I've been with BE for a year or two now, and never really had any problems. The download speeds aren't the best (10Mb) because of the distance to the exchange, but the service is truly unlimited and you never seem to get throttled even with torrents. I've had no problems with their customer support, you can raise a "ticket" on their website for non urgent questions and they always seem to get answered really quickly. When moving I had to wait 2 weeks for BT to connect the line, but once it was in BE was up and running within the day. When the modem started playing up, and BE were running an offer where you got a free wireless N modem for joining their landline, they offered the modem for free even though I'd signed up for the landline before the offer was on. These days their prices are a lot higher than when I joined, but it's still good value if you rate no bandwith limits and throttling over pure speed.

“HIDDEN COSTS, ON/OFF CONNECTIONS & TERRIBLE CUSTOMER...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/09/2011

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER WROTE A REVIEW, PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE BETHERE, I AM UK/KENT BASED AND I WAS WITH 'BETHERE' FOR 16 MONTHS, I HAD READ SOME GOOD REVIEWS AND DECIDED TO PURCHASE 'BE UNLIMITED'. I WAS RELATIVELY SATISFIED WITH THERE SERVICE AT FIRST, APART FROM CONSTANTLY BEING ON/OFF LINE, I HAD TO MAKE COUNTLESS PHONECALLS, OFTEN WAITING UP TO 45 MINUTES BEFORE I ACTUALLY SPOKE TO SOMEONE, USUALLY THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT WAS FROM BULGARIA OR PAKISTAN AND THE LANGUAGE BARRIER MADE CONVERSATIONS HARD. AFTER MY ONE YEAR CONTRACT WAS UP, I DECIDED TO CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION AND MOVE TO ANOTHER BROADBAND SUPPLIER, THIS, I WAS TOLD, NEEDED A TWO MONTH CANCELLATION NOTICE... SO I GAVE MY NOTICE AND WAITED TWO MONTHS TO PAY MY FINAL BILL, BUT THERE WAS NO RECORD OF MY CANCELLATION..... SO I GAVE ANOTHER CANCELLATION, WHICH FINALLY CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION IN JULY 2010, IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 2011. TODAY I RECEIVED A 'FORMAL NOTICE' FROM A DEPT COLLECTION AGENCY NOTIFYING ME THAT I HAD PAY AROUND £45 THAT I OWED TO 'BETHERE'. I CONTACTED BE THERE AND WAS TOLD THAT I OWED £35 FOR THE 'FREE' MODEM AND THE OTHER £9 WAS FOR ONE WEEKS USEAGE THAT I HAD NOT PAID, SHE AGREED THAT I HAD PAID MY FINAL BILL, BUT THIS WAS 'FOR THE WEEK AFTER I HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED!', ALSO, I APPARENTLY SHOULD HAVE READ THE FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS AS THIS STATED THAT, ALTHOUGH THE MODEM IS FREE, I SHOULD RETURN IT WITHIN 28 DAYS AFTER MY SUBSCRIPTION HAS ENDED, I POINTED OUT THAT I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS WHEN I CANCELLED MY SUBSCRIPTION AND PAID MY FINAL BILL, AGAIN, I SHOULD HAVE READ THE FULL T & Cs. I WILL PAY THIS 'FORMAL DEMAND' AS I DO NOT NEED THE AGGRAVATION, BUT I JUST HOPE I CAN LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT THIS COMPANY IS LIKE.

“Good but could improve in one area.”

★★★★☆

written by on 11/08/2011

Well out of the ISP's I have used one being Tiscali (back in 2007) and BT (February 2009), Be are the better choice because I have never experienced problems like throttling and disconnections as what happened to me on Tiscali, nor any problems in regards to strange disconnections from midnight to anywhere up to 6AM (BT). Also this is my 2nd time using Be and like the previous time, I have never had any problems and also compared out of Tiscali and BT in regards to download and upload, I get around 890.5 kB/s down and 121.1 kB/s up (on average double to that compared to BT and Tiscali 485 kB/s down and 90 kB/s up). In regards to download limits? None that I know of and my 2nd time being with them I'm on the value package and the first time I was on the Pro package. Also Be assign you a static IP even if you are on a Dynamic IP but the exception it's prone to change if you decide to disconnect your connection and reconnect, but if you choose a package with a Static IP, it means you get assigned an IP permanently (that's the difference between the two). This does actually have a benefit especially if you decide to use OpenDNS to manage your connection. Now down to the bad side of things. The only problem I had was with there customer service in regards to phoning them, it can be slightly bit difficult in regards to speech but you'll get there in the end though, but after you have your Broadband set up, you'll be able to contact them from other means which cuts out the phone call side of things.

“No problems”

written by on 26/07/2011

I had BE for 6 months with no problems, moved to a place they didn't cover for a year, moved back and got an excellent uncapped Value package. They doubled the price recently, so are probably back on par with the field, but I don't mind because they provide a service reliable enough to work from home. Perhaps one short outage a fortnight, no long ones. Unlimited downloads more important than speed for me, but the service doesn't feel throttled. Their router works well. Never needed to call customer support

“Fed up of constant disconnections”

written by jumbaya on 20/07/2011

I read glowing reports about BE before I joined them..... well, all I can say is they must have been for a different company to the BE I'm with!! I am obtaining very average speed - they are certainly not the fastest (as is claimed in some quarters) Extremely regular and annoying outages - at least every other day if not more.... is this a sneaky way of throttling bandwidth or capping download allowance?? One has to wonder! Average customer service, not particularly helpful. They supply a godawful BEBox thingy similar to the one that Noah had on his ark before he updated! My previous service provider was talktalk and I thought I hated them. Now I can't wait for my year with BE to be up so I can go back to them!!! ...says a lot!

“Terrible”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/07/2011

Poor phone support, (Overseas and you regularly get cut off) If you dont get cut off things either get lost in translation or totally ignored. Website bugs (raising a support ticket results in the system thinking its HTML code or something 9/10 attempts). Routing and peering issues meaning you forever hit reload/refresh in the browser. IWF issues sometimes entire sites end up blocked rather than specific dodgy content, if you use any file hosting site like rapidshare forget all about joining them. Even more so if you use online backup services which you have paid for, it may not work with BE internet. But the worst thing of all connection constantly disconnects. They hide all this from potential customers by keeping their forum which is full of complaints private to members only, meaning you only discover all these issues once you sign up. Avoid at all costs!

Constant disconnections, cant hold sync for more than a day. Overseas support (Bulgarian i think) that read from scripts (always blaming filters etc) and if that wasnt bad enough the call often goes dead while you try to understand their poor English. Staff are also rude and dismissive of any issues and so are long term users on their own private forums. Simply the worst ISP ive ever had and the worst support ive ever experienced from any service you can imagine, not just broadband. They also appear to send out debt collection letters to people that owe nothing and have left them years ago. Nasty ISP that should be avoided at all cost, dont take my word for it ring their support line and see for yourself.

“Excellent speed, no throttling”

★★★★★

written by beezer60 on 03/06/2011

I migrated from IDNet to Be and I couldn't be happier. No traffic-shaping (throttling) and no having to watch usage (like with IDNet) in case you exceed download limits. Very quick responses to emails. Ok, so the call centre/support is in Bulgaria but these guys speak good English and they know their stuff, unlike the script jockeys at most ISPs including Be's parent company o2. Not the cheapest (about the same price as IDNet) but for what you get it's a bargain. I'm hoping they introduce a fibre broadband product this year because I don't think I would have it anybody else.

“Was very happy initially with Be, as one of their...”

written by on 05/05/2011

Was very happy initially with Be, as one of their first customers. They actually delivered what they promised.

I have stayed loyal over the years until recently when I just decided I'd had enough of being lied to, messed around and generally treated like they really couldn't care less.

I've moved 3 times and each time has been a disaster, but you think it'll be better next time... well it never is. Plenty of time wasted without a service (3 weeks was the record), minutes turning into hours on the phone to support and billing, trying to get someone to care.

When I did finally get my service back after the last move, the line was up and down like a yoyo. Everything fine from Be's end so it must be the BT line, right? Well BT came twice and gave it the all clear twice so it must be Be. No Sir, not Be's problem. Pay us £300 to get BT out again? Err no thanks. Gave up trying to escalate that one, only so much head banging against a brick wall you can take.

So with a sub-speed flakey service I soldiered on for another 18 months. Up and down she went, like an up and downy thing. Occasionally I grumbled to support but there was nothing they would do. Unless I was prepared to pay to get BT out. Tried to escalate it to the grown ups but the kids on the phone wouldn't have it. Letters remained ignored.

Decided enough was enough recently. Thanks Be, you were great once, but now you're as bad as the rest of them. Hello Sky, at least you're cheap and I can have Anytime+ on my telly.

To cap it off, they've now charged me an extra £40 for "early termination", the miserable sods.

Total bunch of crooks - avoid!

Despite leaving this shower of muppets 3 years ago, they have decided now that I owe them money.

What these fools fail to have realised is that they are trying to bill for a period 6 months after I moved from the property and after all services were disconnected.

To cap it off, they do not respond to emails, but do seem very good at appointing debt collection agents!

Leave well alone!
