“Not the best company at all...”

★★☆☆☆

written by thatloid on 21/05/2015

I have noticed that if you are good with your card and pay off every month, then they don't give you a credit increase, but if you are always on the limit and can only afford to pay the minimum, then they will bump up your credit limit quicker than a lift to the top floor.. its poor business. I have dealt with them once before and have been in that situation, I am going to leave them soon as their purchase interest and minimum payments are quite close or exceed the minimum payment of which sometimes means that if you have little funds, paying off could be extremely difficult. my advice is have it for a year and then find someone else to have a card with.

“No way to contact them with a complaint”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Barking_Mad on 19/04/2015

This company really stinks ! I had a fraudulent transaction on my credit card last year, but I've been unable to report it because I can't find either a postal or an email address for the company. Yes, I know there is a phone-number listed, but I am unable to contact them in this way, so it seems that I just have to wave goodbye to the money that was taken from my card without my permission. I think this is a disgusting way to run a business !

“I have personally had really bad experience with Vanquis. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ybMaloney49 on 19/04/2015

I have personally had really bad experience with Vanquis. Originally Vanquis wrote to me to say that I was eligible for a credit card ad 34% APR so I applied. This was pretty high but I really wanted to build a good credit score (which the card did actually help me do) to help me with any future credit applications. However, I noticed recently that the balance just doesn't seem to be budging despite paying £100 off a month. So I called up for some guidance and it turns out that out in the t&cs it was actually a 59.9% APR card. It has taken me 2 years to notice this as they don't put their interest rates on their online statements and never actually sent any paper t&cs. I have literally just been paying off the interest every month and then a couple of quid of the balance. By this point I had spent a fair amount of money on the card (which would have been manageable for me to pay off had it been a 34% interest card). I completely accept that my naivety is partially to blame for this but I don't feel that they pitched the card into me properly. Had I actually understood that I would have to pay close to 60% interest on purchases I would have refused (I had been offered another card at he time for about 35% so I would have gone with that). I personally believe that they have a responsibility to make sure that their customers fully understand what they are signing up for. They could do this by: 1. Making it a prerequisite to having the card that you have to sign a contract with all information on such as interest rates. 2. Putting their interest rates on their monthly statements (all they put is that it is available upon request). Luckily, now that I have a good credit score I was able to get an 8.9% loan to pay this off from my bank which is an absolute godsend. However, not everyone has been or will be this lucky. So my advice is if you must, get the card but make sure you: 1. Say no to any credit limit increases- they put mine up to £2500 2. Only spend on it what you can afford to pay off at the end of the month 3. Set up a direct debit so you do not miss any payments 4. Double check what the interest rate is when they offer you the card and write it down somewhere safe so you can refer to it. 5. If you agree to the Repayment Option Plan write down somewhere safe that you have it. I had it and forgot, went into hospital for a month forgetting I could freeze the account and didn’t even use it. I must have paid over £100 overall to have this and never even used it.

“Wouldn't remove my only ever charge”

★☆☆☆☆

written by McFaddensx200 on 04/04/2015

I paid my balance off in full and the next day they applied a charge of £35 despite acknowledging they could see my payment. I have never had a charge before and they wouldn't remove it unlike most other banks and credit providers. The person wouldn't let me speak to the person that denied their authorization and over all I am just unhappy with their complete lack of goodwill!

“Vanquis Credit Card - Great for me!”

★★★★★

written by Felix316 on 28/03/2015

I have seen all the negatives about these guys, all I can say about my experience is they are great. I have never missed a payment, they have increased my limit to £3.5k. I now pay my balance off in full each month and now my credit score with experian is 988. They are the same as any other credit company, they just expect to be paid on time!

To give Vanquis 5 starts - you really must be in the minority. Speaking from personal experience - unlike most other credit card companies, if you pay on time or even early, but don't quite pay off the full balance one month - they sting you with 2 charges: Purchase Interest and Billed Deferred Finance Charges, which effectively equates to 120% APR!!! You speak to their Customer Service department and their explanation for this additional charge is vague to say the least. NOT A GOOD COMPANY TO DEAL WITH.

I have been accepted by Vanquis for a card in the last couple of days and feel I need to add to your comments even though I haven't received the card yet. I read through all your comments regarding charges and telephone harassment and I can understand why Vanquis have to charge such high rates as nobody on here seems to understand that you need to pay back what you spend. You should be saying thank you to Vanquis for risking their money loaning it to us in the first place. We have all (or most of us) proven through past mistakes or misfortune that we pose a risk that Vanquis are talking a chance on. Of course you need to take into account that interest will be charged if balances are not cleared in full. And you should be aware of how much you have spent and if all these charges have appeared on your account balance or not. Really people if you can't do some simple addition and subtraction really should you be applying for a card that is attempting to help you to borrow more in the future. RANT OVER

I had a Vanquis Visa card for quite a while and it is the worst company I have every come across they get even worse when you try to close your account, I close my account late last year and they forgot to cancel the Card Protection which meant they charged a close account money 20 days after it was cancelled, I never got a statement or notification I was still being charge until all the phone calls started, this company will harass you even if you only owe 1p on you account so far I have received 24 calls with in the last 6 hours when the issue was resolved on the first call I would never have used Vanquis if I had known what they were like, they put charges on top of charges

Applied for this card whilst I was a student with no credit history, was referred for what they call an "Alpha Card" which is what they offer people whose credit score is too low for a standard vanquis visa card, All this means is my limit started at an initial 100 and i was met with an APR of 69% and a higher minimum payment to keep my account out of arrears, This account has almost been open for an entire year and my limit hasn't budged unfortunately, but since using this card my credit has improved significantly i have managed to obtain other credit builder cards and also a few catalogues and mobile contracts which i was declined for in the past. This card is perfect if you plan to spend 50-100 a month and pay it back in full which avoids the interest, or if you ever find yourself in a financial emergency is always a life saver! Just don't make a huge purchase and pay the minimum because you'll be paying for the next 200 years!

Rubbish company providing a rubbish service. The available credit on your card does not take in to account interest that is going to be charged on your next statement. Hence I have now ended up over limit and can not get back in my limit. This is because they keep making exstortionate charges on each statement and asking for an unrealistic amount of money each month. When you call them they are rude unhelpful and don't care. Just want their money back and greedy charges. A total waste of space.

“Rubbish card”

written by 120Cooper on 25/12/2014

After paying them to email me when I'm getting overdrawn and telling me I have X amount to spend, recfently they have just got it right so that I spend what they say, then bang a load of charges on me. So don't pay the Repayment Option Plan, it's not worth it for £150 anyway. I'm going to get it paid up and closed in the New Year, wish I'd never bothered getting one. They prey on people these days who need a bit of extra cash and it is only a bit too. When you phone to speak to someone about it, they're not very helpful either. I asked to cancel the Option Plan and got fifty questions as to why. They're obviously on commission. Well I can't afford to help pay their commission, so I can't wait to get rid once and for all.

“Credit increase leaves alot to be desired”

★★★☆☆

written by ajones32 on 22/12/2014

I have been with vanquis now for 14 months and find that only being offered one increase in that time from £250 upto £1000 quite a let down. Ive not missed any payments and pay around 30x the minimum payment if not more. On the other hand aqua card is alot better, ive been with them the same amount of time and ran my account exactly the same and they have increased every 4 months and started at £250 and im now at £1800, plus aqua also reduce your interest rate every year. I do appreciate the fact that when evanquis found information online of a bank card number close to mine they rang me and asked me to check my statement and issued another card. I must say that 14 months ago i couldnt get credit and this week i applied for a high street credit card with 0% for 24 months and then a rate of 18.9% i got accepted which goes to show it doesnt take that long to turn things around. I did get refused at first but after ringing underwriting they overturned it as thay can look at the application and credit check personally.

written by ConradMueller451 on 13/12/2014

Hi, been a customer of Vanquis bank since March and haven't seen a limit increase. Account has been paid on time each month by direct debit since opening. My credit file isn't that bad im just not on the electoral role. If your looking for a card that grows with you and provides limit increases maybe this card isn't the best to choose.. I have applied for other credit cards and have been accepted with greater credit limits so this account will be closed down

I would agree about the credit limit. Ive had the black diamond visa for 14 months now and only had one increase, from £250 upto £1000. I find aqua really good. Been with them the same amount of time and started at £250 and im now upto £1800, plus aqua reduce your interest rate every year. Luckily now 14 months on im starting to get accepted for main stream credit cards with 24 months interest free

Most card companies, along with the banks, are reluctant to lend/increase limits because of the current financial situation. Although things seem to be getting better, it may be a long while before they start to lend like they used to. Then again, that's what got us in to the mess in the first place. I, personally, would avoid building up a large balance with Vanquis. It will take you a lot of time (and money) to clear it. I was paying £150 per month on a £3000 balance and was clearing pennies every month. Once you start to rebuild your credit score, try a more reputable lender without the eye watering interest rates. Good luck!
