“Great training and practical advice”

★★★★☆

written by amberleyflyer1 on 04/06/2013

I had a bespoke two day course to help improve my boat handling skills, get me through CEVNI and upgrade my ICC to cover vessels over 10m. I had two very enjoyable days with Solent Boat Training. I was impressed with the knowledge of my instructor, and his willingness to go beyond the simple training and really share his extensive boat experience with me. Solent Boat Training also helped me with the planning for our first channel crossing to Guernsey and provided an excellent skipper, Beau, to accompany us on the home leg giving us advice and guidance along the way. I have no hesitation recommending this company to others. Adrian Wynne, Amberley Flyer.

“RYA VHF Short Range Certificate”

★★★★★

written by Bishee on 04/06/2013

I had a great time on this course. At first, I thought that I was out of my depth but soon realised that the other attendants were probably as inexperienced as I. We all worked together in teams and the variety of students was quite pleasing - I was concerned that I was going to be oldest, but found that two others had several years on me! The course was friendly, specific, easy to understand, relevant and an effortless way to get qualified. Instruction, demonstrations and hands-on tutorials were well-delivered, professional but un-stuffy. Plenty of time was given for coffees, teas and breaks, as well as time for a decent lunch out in the restaurants next to the yachts. The final exam/test was easily navigated because the level and competence of teaching gave plenty of information and, in my case I nearly achieved 100%. Now I can be satisfied that I can handle any short range radio to enable me to communicate ship to shore for leisure, docking and all emergency and urgent situations. I will be booking more courses soon - but not until I get back from the Fastnet race in August - and I would recommend this very professional Company to anyone looking to improve on their skills. I would add that this was also the least expensive course of four that I looked at, who were offering training in the Solent area. Being in Southampton was aslo very practical and convenient for me.

“Powerboat Level 2”

★★★★★

written by on 01/05/2013

I attended the Powerboat Level 2 course this weekend (27th & 28th April). Having no experience previously. I was greeted by the team and introduced to my instructor. The information and skills were demonstrated and performed over the 2 days by him, with him always giving real examples to tie up with the theory of powerboating. Having spent 20 years in education I would grade him a Grade 1 if he taught in the FE sector. Overall an intense, enjoyable and well worth course. I have been so impressed with the course delivery that I shall be booking my wife onto the course. Thanks everyone for the experience and thanks for the professionalism you demonstrated and for passing me as competent to use a powerboat.

“PWC Jet Ski Course”

★★★★★

written by on 30/04/2013

I recently attended the PWC Jet Ski Course. Great fun, the classroom work was kept short but informative and relevant. Instructor was great striking a balance between having fun and picking up the relevant points. Plenty of time on the water and impressive Jet Skis to ride on. I'll be booking some more time on the Jet Skis in the coming months. Fab day out cheers guys

I took the Powerboat Level 2 course and had a fantastic time and learnt lots. The Ribs used were of high standard and well maintained. The staff were very professional, highly qualified and extremely knowledgeable. We stayed one of the yachts supplied by Solent Boat Charters which was extremely comfortable and included in the course price. I will definitely be using them again and highly recommend them for all your training needs. Thanks.

“Rib ticklingly good!”

★★★★★

written by on 26/04/2013

What made the powerboat 2 course such a success for us was how you pitched it so well for a family group of three from 12 years to fifty something ensuring that everyone stayed engaged for two days. Undoubtedly treating us to a classroom afloat on one of the larger motor cruisers was inspiring. But the mix of theory with practical exercises on the water was the key to giving us the confidence to go ribbing whilst understanding our limitations. The location is ideal for marina and harbour training, and as the wind strengthened we had the opportunity to test ourselves in busy waterways drawing on your experience. I am very pleased to recommend this course wholeheartedly.

“So Good I've Booked The Next Course!”

★★★★★

written by on 24/04/2013

On Saturday 20th April I attended the PWC Course which was a gift from my wife. Well it turned out to be one of the best gifts ever. The instructor Bo together with support from Ollie made it a greatly informative and enjoyable day. Bo got the balance spot on between fun and formal inspiring us to learn whilst taking in the excitement of the whole boating experience. The course delivered so much more than I was anticipating, a full day from 09.30 to 18.00 everything included and more. This week I will be booking the PB2 course and perhaps further to that the intermediate PB course. Well done to Bo and the Solent Team for putting together and most importantly delivering and excellent course. See you in August for the PB2. Best Regards Bob Bray.

“Friendly. Fun. Professional. ”

★★★★☆

written by on 22/04/2013

The tutor was very professional and engaging as an instructor. The course itself was very water based to not much hanging around in the classroom. The facilities at Ocean Village and the ribs themselves were all very tidy and the marina itself is a nice quiet place to go over the basics. The Hamble/ Southampton is a great place for beginners. Over the 2 day course both I and the other person on the course really got the most out of it. I'd highly recommend it to anyone else.

“RYA power boat level 2”

★★★★★

written by on 04/04/2013

My son-in-law having bought a rib and now living in France had persuaded me that in order for me to get up to speed and conform to French legislation I needed a certificate of competence. Having searched the web for availability this course certainly fitted the bill. It was very well balanced between practical and theory and whist improving my skills and competence proved to be very enjoyable. I would certainly recommend this course to a friend and the only thing that could have been improved on was the weather.

I found the course to be most interesting and presented in a straight forward format. [name removed], the instructor, was a very engaging person and talked with great enthusiasm. I have 35 years of boating experience whilst the other 2 people on the course were complete novices and [name removed] was very considerate and patient demonstrating the practical elements of the course. I would recommend this course to my friends.

“Fantastic”

★★★★★

written by Megan.b on 03/04/2013

I went to do the powerboating course on my own as i needed it to do a windsurfing instructor course. I was at first apprehensive about going to southampton on my own, as it is not local for me. However as soon as i arrived i was put at ease and had a fantastic two days. The course was great fun being able to drive the powerboat and even the theory side was really interesting and greatly helps you be more confident out on the water when you know what you doing, and why! The instructor [name removed] was really friendly and helpful. I also stayed in the yacht over night and that was great fun in itself! id never slept in a boat before and it was very exciting and free! I would definetely recommend to a friend and if i need to do any more powerboat, or other, courses, i will be back :)

“Powerboat Level 2”

written by cosmino on 02/04/2013

We were a group of three friends without any boating experience. All of us decided to take the Powerboat Level 2 course, mostly to get the ICC. The course was excellent, the instructor very competent and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was pleasant and we did feel at ease asking any questions. The course involved a lot of hands on and very useful theory classes. At the end of it you feel confident to handle a powerboat, plan a trip, be aware of the safety rules, calculate your position, collisions, regulations and much more. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to start boating. Excellent vlue for money.

“Fantastic experience”

★★★★★

written by janekg on 31/03/2013

I've had the pleasure of attending a RYA Powerboar Level 2 course run by Solent Boat Training and I can only say it was truly a first-class experience. The boat was very well equipped and maintained to a very high standard. Our instructor was clearly very experienced and did an excellent job of sharing that experience and his knowledge. The whole of the course, both in the classroom and the time spent on water (of which there was plenty) felt professional, safe and was a lot of fun - which is all boating ever has to be! Matt was also kind enough to offer free accommodation on one of the school's motor yachts. Not a bad bonus, if you ask me - saved me a commute to London and added an unexpected element of luxury to the whole thing. Obviously, I'm very happy about my PB2 certificate, but have also discovered an excellent go-to place both for charter and training! Thanks!

“ONE VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER”

★★★★★

written by on 23/03/2013

I attended the RYA first aid and VHF courses, which were both conducted professorially and with a great deal of expertise. All students were put at ease by the relaxed and friendly atmosphere created by the very experienced instructors, I would recommend any course conducted by Solent Boat training. Both the practical and theory on both courses were indispensably and built confidence. Its only left for me to thank all staff for a wonderful learning experience.

“PWC Proficieney Licence Course”

★★★★★

written by on 16/03/2013

I recently attended the first PWC course of 2013 and had an absolute blast! Our instructor, though young, was very knowledgeable as well as experienced and delivered the information concisely and in a relaxed and fun manner. We were lucky with the weather as the sun came out in the morning and lasted until half way into the afternoon before clouding over for the last hour. There were four on the course and everyone got on well and really enjoyed themselves. We had 2 jet ski's between us and whilst they were being ridden by 2, the other 2 were on the rib with the instructor. Speaking for myself, I loved every second of it and even though we were sharing jet ski's, everyone had plenty of time using them. I would highly recommend this course for anyone interested in jet skiing, whether it's with their own or any they intend to hire on holiday. This licence will definitely give you more confidence and if you do hire one, you're more likely to be given a little more freedom compared to the general public. I've even been told this licence could possibly reduce insurance costs too! When compared to the jet ski safari (which is great value at £99 for 3 hours) it seems silly to not pay the extra £50 and come away with a licence after a full day of fun and enjoyable learning.

“PB Level 2 Course”

★★★★★

written by on 16/03/2013

As an experienced sailor (YM, ICC) with own boat, looking to purchase a RIB, decided to take the PB2 course last weekend. As I searched the web Solent Boat training caught my eye as it was well organised and one left well informed about what they did. Booked it on line, Matt& Sean followed it up with email & phone - great communication. Likes: 1. The training RIB (Ribcraft 5.8m) had all the safety features you would expect from a RYA training boat, eg. Liferaft, Grab bag etc. It featured a nice strong A frame with Nav lights and comms + GPS. Metal cleat for anchoring at the bow, Extra protection for the tubes at relevant points. Nice smooth 140 HP, 3 cyl Suzuki engine (only one comment: the throttle needs adjusting - engagement is not smooth in either direction). Stable jockey seats all round. Non slip deck coating providing additional safety. 2. The course content (both theory & practical) was delivered very well, Sean has a nice, gentle way of involving the student in a constructive discussion as he is instructing. This made the weekend a real pleasure, despite real fresh conditions on the second day (NE'lies that preceeded the sleet & snow). 3. I will be dealing with Sean & Matt again, bare boat chartering their RIBS and possibly doing an Advanced course later in the season. Dislikes: NONE,

I attended the Powerboat Level 2 in mid January and the weather was aweful, snowing to be precise. However Matt still made the whole course really enjoyable and as i was the only person on the course, dropped me off at my hotel and picked me up the next morning. I learned alot on the course and above all i enjoyed myself at the same time. Would highly recommend Solent Boat Training :D

“Crazy not to do it! Power boat level 2”

★★★★★

written by Prebbs on 12/03/2013

I have owned small sport boats on and off for around 15 years and only ever went from Southampton across the island etc i completely blagged my knowledge to staying within the main shipping lane taking the assumption if a large vessel is ok sure the hell I am and to no surprise I did get away with it, but anyone can fly alone the Solent it's when you come to moore up to your pontoon it can get a little worrying especially somewhere like the Hamble as the tide is rushing out, that's where these guys come in they have shown me how to spring off a pontoon correctly, enter a berth that has the tide and wind throwing all it's got at you, how to deal with man over board, read charts and navigate, keep to the safe side of danger, passage planning, etc etc loads of stuff I had never even taken into consideration before, I now can not wait to get out on the water and venture the Solent all over as its gave me the confidence now to do. So as I put in my title you would be crazy not to do it thanks guys really worth every penny
