“Inaccurate DNA results and appalling customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/07/2019

I took a test with MyHeritage. I was excited to get my results and puzzled at the ethnicity details but more puzzled at the completely new member of my "extended family" they purported to have found. I set out to research who this person was and having tracked her down and with her permission, plotted out both our family trees trying to work out how we may be connected. 6 month of research later and now MyHeritage has admitted I'm not actually related to her at all, and have refunded my test and membership. But they refuse to compensate me for the additional tests I had her family take with a third party company which is what exposed their results. I put a review on another site and was contacted by a member of their "VIP" Customer service via a comment on the post. But emailing the address given just gets ignored. Others have complained of this happening to them too. A public show of "here's our VIP email address" but they don't ever reply to it. There are plenty of DNA test companies out there, make sure you research HOW they come to their conclusions, how they categorise the results and which ones will allow you to upload your tests to their site for free. MyHeritage is not one of the good ones and I'd never wish what I have been through on my worst enemy. Their results made me query everything I know about my life and my family and wonder if I was adopted and my late father wasn't actually my father at all. Despicable.

“Couldn’t even log in”

written by hdHenry1953 on 27/03/2018

I couldn’t even log in under the trial membership. Even though I had an account ID. After trying for 30 minutes I gave up and decided to cancel my trial membership. It should not be this hard just to begin your experience.

Dear MyHeritage member,

I regret to find your low star review and I will do all I can to assist you with this locating your kit.

One of the main reasons why there is a delay in showing kits sent in around after the holidays is the amount of people that sent their kits at the same time after the holidays.

It seems that this year, many people thought a DNA kit would be an excellent gift. We are working to resolve this backlog issue as soon as possible.

I'd like to ensure your results tracking as soon as possible. In order to do so, I must locate your registered myheritage account.

Therefore, please e-mail me so I may assist you as soon as possible.

Kind regrds

“Dishonest "Sale" advert”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 17/12/2017

In November, I was sucked in by an advert. I realised too late that I had accepted a HUGE postal charge, which I mistakenly believed to be part of the deal. I made contact immediately, was listened to courteously, then assured my money would be refunded. To date, it has not been. I am concerned. Impossible to speak to a human to sort this out.

“Support?”

They take your money and run. I have a lot of information already but the site hasn't been able to supply anything else. I have contacted them but just left on hold without reply. No way of emailing them. I have wasted over a hundred pounds and not discovered anything I didn't already know. They only have census records up to 1901 and just keep giving the same connections. My fathers family have lived in the same small rural town for centuries so it should be easy. I have my grandfathers birth certificate so find date of death should be easy but no, "no results" is the answer. He would be 138 years old so he must be dead! Do not join this site.

“Complete nonsense”

★☆☆☆☆

written by MikaylaArmstrong475 on 19/08/2017

I uploaded my DNA from Ancestry to my heritage. My mom is Italian, I've met even my great-grand parents. Ancestry has me at 80% Italian . According to my mom my dad was also Italian. My heritage had no Italian on there, and NO matches. Lol what a joke! They were way off in every area. Don't waste your money.

“0% Confidence in DNA Results ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SKM2 on 02/08/2017

I purchased the DNA kit for myself and my husband. I have 0% confidence in the results. Both of my paternal grandparents were born in the same village in Southern Italy. My DNA results showed 0% Italian. My husband's maternal line came to the US from England in the 1800's. His DNA showed 0% British ancestry. This was a total waste of money. I would give a minus star rating if that was possible.

“Total Madeup!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by daisydog28 on 28/07/2017

These idiots send me information that I'm 24.1% Scandinavian, 10% Greek, and 2.2% West Asian!! Get this - my last name is Grigsby - just a little English - which they figure out - duh!! But they show absolutely NO European ancestry. My mother's maiden name is Vandergriff - sound Dutch??? Her Grandfather was a Dutchman who came to the US. Again, they show NO European ancestry!! Guess what - this same Dutchman married a Full Bred Creek Indian (we have photos of the two of them!!) These fools show ABSOLUTELY NO American Indian in my profile. My mother and her sister and my Grandmother are soooo Indian looking that it's unbelievable!! This company is a total joke!! This is to get your money and make stupid stuff up!! Do not believe anything that these people tell you and let everyone know not to waste their money on this ridiculous made up information!!

“4 months later..... nothing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by KAKOMNA on 09/03/2017

I ordered a DNA kit in November as a Christmas gift, here it is in mid March and they have no idea where my results are. It took 2 months for me ro get my kits in the mail, and were missing the cheek swabs to collect the DNA. They sent out swabs 2 weeks later. I did the swabs that night and mailed them out that day. 7 weeks later I call and they say there is a "problem" and it will take them about a week or more to figure out what that problem is. I requested my money back. That will probably take months too.

“The New Process:”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Childers1984 on 07/02/2017

I'm really NOT impressed one bit, with the new procedure of MyHeritage and having to upload new additions of my family tree ONCE every 24 hours. I was working on my tree nightly and have done so for quite a number of years, but now (this week) I've hardly touched it. As a result I DEFINITELY WON'T be renewing my subscription when it comes up for renewal.

“Don't trust their DNA matches either!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/12/2016

Everything seemed great under the free plan so I upgraded to the Complete Plan for about $175 a year. What a mistake. At that point, the site promised all sorts of connections but when I clicked on them they didn't exist. I got broken links, broken image links, time after time. I also uploaded my DNA to this site and found a few good matches. One person came out as a .9% match with six matching segments. We started corresponding to determine where our histories matched up. After a long day of comparing notes, we realized that MyHeritage had grossly overestimated our connection. On our original DNA testing site, we were only a .2% match with 1 matching segment. What a ripoff. MyHeritage is trying to convince people to upload their results, but their own matching algorithm is a disaster. I found numerous blogs with people saying the same thing. This site is to make $$$ and nothing else. Avoid at all costs. I contacted my bank and had them cancel my order. I also emailed MyHeritage THREE TIMES through their site to ask for a cancellation and never got a response. Again, AVOID this company.

“misleading at best”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Holbrooker322 on 28/09/2016

I signed up for myheritage.com premium plan for $10.95 a month which is only billed annually, as the record I wanted to see showed I needed that membership. When I paid the $131 and went to see the records it then said I had to upgrade for $119 to the data plan. Unfortunately that was way more than I wanted to send for the review i wanted to complete. I cancelled my membership within the hour of purchasing it. Cancelling only took away the auto renewal. Today i called Myheritage.com and advised I would like my money back for at least 11 months. The person on the phone wanted to educate me on why I needed the upgrade. I advised I didn't want to pay an additional 120. He continued the upsell and I repeated that I would like to cancel and get my money back he said okay it will show up in 3 business days and then hung up. No goodbye, no is there anything else etc. Just disconnected the call. I feel the advertising is misleading, the cancellation option is misleading. The service was all about upselling and then rudeness. Would not recommend to anyone.

“The first I knew anything about this company was when...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gsm1972 on 13/08/2016

The first I knew anything about this company was when I had a pending charge of £50.39 on my bank balance. I had not even signed up for the service. They sent an email to say we hope you enjoyed your 7 day trial, yet when I phoned them they had no record of my email on their system! I couldn't log in to see what was going on as it didn't recognise my email so I phoned them and they were anything but helpful. I reported them to the fraud department of my bank who recovered my money and I never heard anything from them since. I demanded a call back as to how they obtained my details yet nothing! Avoid at all costs!

“Looking for Adam and Eve?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Aminak363 on 05/06/2015

I have 35 years experience in doing family history. The people of this site are encouraged to research "by association" whatever this means. In other word most people I contacted had absolutely no connection to my family line. Why waste time when they could be tracing their own ancestry. Also they didn't have many resources.

“Free vs Paid Services”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Nature_Lover on 22/05/2015

I like the fact that you can upload a GEDcom for free. What I didn't like is that MYHeritage says that they will bill you annually if you do not have a credit or debit card. But once you fill out the information, My Heritage asks you to download the form, print it out and submit the entire year up front when you mail in the form. This is deceptive.

Hi, there are several DNA testing companies and I’m not an expert by any means. If it was me, I’d take a home test with Ancestry.com. Then I’d upload the results (all very simple and instructions are included on the site) to GedMatch. I’d look at the results of the DNA test and start plotting out a family tree within Ancestry or a similar tree building site with what you know and what you can work out based on the dna results. Be cautious, some people don’t want to be discovered or share information so it can be time consuming and frustrating. Join a local Genealogy group too either in person or online as they will be able to help you. Best of luck.
