This is an excellent site for people who aren’t always familiar with complicated downloading software. One of my friends from school recommended this to me when I needed to download software for class. Instead of buying Microsoft Office for an obscene amount of money – I just downloaded this program Abiword. My roommate has been using Abi word for a long time, so I tried hers out and sure enough – it works just the same. I will say that the Abi Word program doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as Office word, but for a straight forward word processor – it’s great. It has all the basics like word count, different kinds of fonts you can use, the ability to change the size of your font, and I think there’s a way to do a spell check and grammar thing too. WHEN YOU ARE SAVING, it is important to save it as a doc. Or else it will save it under abi word. When I tried to upload my file from an email account on my school – there were some problems because you need to save it in the proper form. That was my own fault though and it’s a very common problem to keep in mind when writing anything that isn’t straight out of modern software. The other thing I downloaded was pidgin because as some of you may know, AIM (aol instant messenger) has some problems with it. Pidgin works just the same and you can plug in your email address and it will pull all of your contacts up that have instant messenger. It works for MSN, Yahoo, I think google and definitely AOL. It’s by far the easiest instant messenger I’ve used and since it’s a software download you don’t have to have a web page open for it to work. With AIM express you had to have a web page open which was really annoying because if it closed somehow, you wouldn’t be able to tell right away and then all your conversations ended. This way it’s just a lot easier. Since Wisedownloads.com is open source, you just have to pay attention to those kinds of things. Over all – I much prefer using open source not only because it’s easier, but I agree with the ethics involved. I get a little worried when corporations like Windows or Microsoft control a lot of the software because to me that seems a little like a monopoly. I thought this was a really cool site.
