“Be careful on auto-renewal, they are 40% more expensive ”

I have been with Devitt for four years, the first two years I got caught out on the automatic renewal where the policy is renewed by my verbal agreement. The policies are good but on the third year I wanted to test the market and made sure auto-renewal was off. I used a comparison site and found that my premium (with a recent claim) was good value from Devitt on the comparison site. However the renewal papers came and it was 40% more expensive as an existing customer, and that quote didn't include my latest claim. I wrote to Devitts and printed out the comparison site quote for a Devitt policy and asked why would it be more expensive but such a margin? The response was to send a further bill for £100 in addition to the already inflated premium, this was to catch up with my change in claim history. The result being if I had not renewed internally with Devitt but bought one of their policies via a comparison site my premium would have been slightly less than HALF!!

Fees for adjustments keep creeping up - at the end of the day, they are experts in motorcycle insurance but I would NEVER allow them to auto-renew your policy because the price difference is breath taking.

Hi,

I’m sorry that you are unhappy with the renewal premium that you received, and also with our automatic-renewal process.

As we are a broker, we do not have any influence over the rates that are provided to clients at renewal – these are provided by the insurer of your policy. If you were involved in an incident then any premium would take this into account, and if the claim is still open, regardless of whether it was your fault or not, then this would be recorded as a ‘fault’ claim.
If the details you entered online differed from this then this could be the reason that the renewal was sent to you was more expensive than the quote you obtained via a price-comparison website. Your renewal premium would have been issued taking the incident into account, as again this was issued by your insurer, and not by Devitt.

As a broker, we have a duty to ensure that our clients are continuously covered at renewal as motor insurance is a legal requirement, and is part of the service that we provide to ensure the renewal process is as swift as possible for our customers. If there are any queries about the automatic renewal process or if customers do not wish to use this facility, we ask that they contact us so we can discuss their individual requirements.

It is also common for insurance providers to issue a discount on their new business premiums, so the quote you received online may have been cheaper as you would have been treated as a new customer.

Once again I apologise if you are unhappy with our services, but I hope that my explanation has gone some way in helping to clarify this matter for you.

Kind regards,

Georgina
