It is interesting to read the mostly negative reviews of A&L = 10 years ago I was in the middle of a degree and was therefore a skint (single parent) student. I called A&L (who I had been with for 5 years without one missed payment) and asked them if I could suspend my payments for two months until my student loan came in. They flatly refused and the customer service adviser (ha) said it wasn't their problem if I was doing a degree and I shouldn't have gone to university then should i? Hmmm. Anyway, as soon as my degree was complete and I got a job, one of first things I did was move my mortgage (to the wonderful Coventry Building Society). When I was asking for redemption fee, A&L expressed concern that I was leaving them and tried to sell me another mortgage. When I got up off the floor after laughing so hard I nearly did myself an injury, I told them over my dead body would I ever touch another one of their products again. And from that day to this, I haven't.

Customer service is virtually non-existent. In dealings that i have had with them they have lost personal information twice. Lost other info a couple more times and never did anything quicker than their maximum timescale. Staff at the callcentre are at best unhelpful, they contradict each other, and will say pretty much anything to get you off their phone.

A&l What A Joke They Are All Muppets They Dont Kno
A&L what a joke they are all muppets they dont know what they are doing we applied for a mortgage only to be declined. when we asked why they required further documentation to support the application and with this information said they would provide us an offer so I followed there instructions. After another fustrating week they declined it again even though we did exactly what they said. I have a clear credit history and the mortgage was well within my affordability factor. I think A&L are currently joining with Santander and Abbey so may be this has something to do with it.
A&L or is it ar**holes and Lemons. Got a Mortgage now with another company now so once again A&L thanks for all your time wasting.........

Good Points: - Good Rate Bad Poin
Good points:
- Good rate
Bad points:
- No online mortgage system so cannot manage online, so have to call for everything
- Customer service is dire. Like talking to a brick wall with an ivy bush covering it... from 100 yards away. Some customer service representatives i've spoken to at the mortgage dept do not understand that reducing the term increases the payments... they often send you letters with mistakes. I've requested to change the term and they have estimated the payments and got it £50 per month out. They dont use their brain, just tell you what the computer says, even if it is clearly wrong!
- Letters take a week to be delivered. Its amazing, i can send a letter 1st class and it gets there the next day - A&L must use donkeys to deliver letters because they take a week minimum.
- Confused communication all the time, differing information in letters and when you speak to them.

All Going Well With Alliance And Leicester Mortgag
All going well with Alliance and Leicester Mortgage until they were informed by our conveyancer that the property could only be sold to another person from our region. It has now been 3 weeks and still no decision. the buyer of our house is now getting impatient. They seem to be stalling with excuses.

They'll give you a mortgage offer. They'll even take your money from your bank account for the survey (An A&L survey, I hasten to add). Everything going smoothly... until...
The road has not been adopted by the council, we're not proceeding. We lose the house of our dreams and FINANCIALLY out of pocket. It takes them over 28 days to decide this and they haven't the decency to contact us in person.
Let's hope with the takeover, they sort out customer relations as otherwise they won't have any customers!

Moved Mortage, I Was Refunded A Payment £297
Moved mortage, I was refunded a payment £297.43 by mistake (after the mortage was moved) they admitted that this was their error , I was given 30 days to return this, the 30 days are not up yet, payment has already been returned, the same day, they blacked my credit rating. Now I am fighting the Alliance & Leicester to get my credit rating put right. With not much help from them.

The £295 Redemption Administration Charge On
The £295 redemption administration charge on an Alliance & Leicester Mortgage is the highest in the market and you will have to pay this if you move mortgage any time during the term (e.g 25 years), not just the original deal (e.g 2 year fixed).
Also, its valuation fees are out of line with the rest of the market.
Always be wary of abnormally low rate products, as the provider will have to recoup money from elsewhere, even if this is trying to sell you more products (e.g Halifax bombard customers with sales calls after purchasing its best buy products).
I took an Alliance and Leicester mortgage on line. There were various enticements at the time such free conveyancing. I was also (wrongly) offered an additional £250 bonus if I opened a premier account (on the whole not a bad account) at the same time. They realised their error later. The offer from the telephone adviser should have been Free conveyancing OR £250. It took around 10 letters to finally get a reply on that issue. Even then, they were not apologetic.
As for the free conveyancing, if you are in no hurry to move into your new place, then go for it. It took around 4 months and alot of pestering of their conveyancers before I could finalise my move into an empty newly built property. You never get to speak to the same person twice at their office, and quite often the telephone adviser has to go and ask advice from a properly qualified property lawyer for very simple queries. Yes, the free conveyancing saves you money on solicitors fees BUT not when you are renting elsewhere because you can't move into an empty property.
I recently tried to make a lump sum payment towards the mortgage. This took 3 months of writing to the Alliance and Leicester mortgages and bank account departments and unsurprisingly NO REPLY. It was finally sorted by going into an Alliance and Leicester branch and a cashier putting me through to a special bank account/mortgage account co-ordinating service they have (you wouldn't know about this unless you actually visit a branch). Oh, by the way, you may think you have seen an option of doing this by the phone. But when you phone up, they ask for a code...you wouldn't know the code unless you are enlightened by a branch advisor.
On the whole the telephone and internet services are extremely poor and you are nothing but a number. There is no accountability for their snail paced performance and inaccuracy when selling you the product.
My advice... If you decide to take out an Alliance and Leicester mortgage, do it via a high street branch.

When Moving House I Decided To Opt For A Fixed Rat
When moving house I decided to opt for a fixed rate mortgage from Alliance and Leicester. As usual when I make a decision - good choice.
As part of the 'up-sizing' process I needed a company that would help and guide me every step of the way. They did and it's left me a happy customer.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the fixed rate option - it allows you to stay in control and as a result you know where you stand.
