I Called Direct Merchants Bank To Pay Off An Amoun
I called Direct Merchants Bank to pay off an amount on my credit card. The representative, the automated system and the web site all showed the same amount. When I called, I told the CSR that I wanted the full amount to be paid off, and I wanted to make sure I was paying the entire amount so I wouldn't get any additional bills for finance charges. I went online while I was speaking to them and paid what I thought was the total amount due. Yesterday, I got a bill for the finance charge. When I called about this and cancelling the card, they said they could remove it, but they could not cancel the card the same day. I asked for a supervisor because I did not want to have to wait another month and call back again just to cancel the card. The supervisor told me the same thing, and asked if I wanted to cancel the card. Since the first CSR I spoke with told me that once they cancelled it, they could not remove the finance charge, I told the supervisor that no, I did not want the card cancelled if it would mean the finance charge wouldn't be removed. She told me she could remove the charge as a courtesy to me, but since I didn't want to keep the account open she wasn't going to remove it. I told her to leave the account open then, and she said it was too late and that I told her to close it. What??!!?? Where did that come from? I explained that all three areas had given me incorrect information, and she said that was because the computer had not cycled yet, and it did the day after I made the payment. When I told her I felt that their computer issues were their problem and I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake, she told me that it wasn't their problem that I received incorrect information. When I told her that I clearly stated that she should leave the account open so the fee could be removed, she told me that she was only going to do that as a courtesy, and since I wasn't going to keep the card, she wasn't going to give me any courtesies. Then she said that she could no longer assist me and hung up on me. Apparently they will only help you if you are going to keep the card!
When I called today to make sure that if I paid the finance charge I would not get another bill, the CSR told me that they pride themselves on great customer care and service, and he was sorry I got misinformation and poor service, but he could not waive the fee either. I wasn't calling about that anyway - I was calling, once again, to try and get the correct amount so that I wouldn't have to deal with them ever again! Thank goodness the account is closed!! I was so tired of trying to keep tabs on the interest rate and calling to get it lowered.

If You Absolutely Must Remain A Customer Of Theirs
If you absolutely must remain a customer of theirs, watch that rate carefully every month.
You'd probably save money and certainly save a great deal of your time if you stop reinforcing their bad behavior and just close the account altogether.
You'll save hundreds a year just moving any balance you have to just about any other credit card.
I will show Direct Merchants Bank who is boss and shut down my account.
I Have To Call Direct Merchants Bank Every Month T
I have to call Direct Merchants Bank every month to contest APR increases. Last time they simply said no. I was a customer for 7 years, and with no explanation, they raised my rate to 26.9% for purchases and 29.99% for cash. I checked my credit rating and it was better than when I took out the card. The only thing that I could see that changed, is that I was carrying a balance. When I first called, they said "why are you angry. It's industry standard practice?"
