The Land Rover Stage 1 Safari Is A Tough Car The F
The Land Rover Stage 1 Safari is a tough car the fuel bills are not for the faint hearted nore is the ride! but it does nearly every thing I ask of it!
I have driven 40,000 miles in 4 years & put it though hell driving all over the uk on & off road, I have put it on it's side twice [both off road] & tested the under body protection after hitting a large rock hidden in heather...
The Rover V8 is a superb responsive power plant & is well position in the engine bay wading does not seem to give it much trouble, it controls the motor well on descents and delivers the responds need in mud & on accents such a sham about the fuel!!!!
I would have to say I have fitted su carbs & removed the legendary restrictor plate witch has helped but 18-22mpg???!!!
At the end of the day it is a bit of a bus and although it will surprise on some of the tight off road situations it will cope with a 109" between the wheels it huge....
it is very simple & although it has some parts that are hard to locate, it contains nearly 100% user serviceable parts & if you look after it it will look after you!

The Land Rover Stage 1 Safari Has Not The Problem
The Land Rover Stage 1 Safari has not the problem of lack of engine power on the main roads. Where the normal series III only goes about 90 km/h, the stage one can do more. Only trouble in europe is the small parking places. But the fun with this car makes everything all right.

We Have Three Land Rover Stage 1 Safaris. I Also O
We have three Land Rover Stage 1 Safaris. I also own prototype# 4 of these very special Land Rovers.
The thirst problem can be solved by an LPG kit. Thus it is more economical to run my other (82) Stage One than my husband's little Citroen.
Rust is a problem and brake drums go fast if you ride her fast. The turning circle can get on your nerves, but then I still would never drive anything else. Where diesels get stuck for lack of power, a Stage One gets through at ease.
You have all the advantages and the charm of a Series Land Rover with the power of a V8 engine.
Of course these old trucks need attention. Give them their feed of 20W50 every 5000 miles and the engine will last.

Its Over 21 So Can Legal Drink In The States, And
Its over 21 so can legal drink in the states, and drink it does, with the rover v8 slurping down juice at around 10mpg around town. staedy speeds and overdrive get it up towards 20mpg, but you will die of boredom.
Noise is a constant problem, and an insulation kit is the first thing on the shopping list.
4 speeds * hi-lo * overdrive gives 16 fwd ratios - though you probaly only ever use 9 or maybe 10. Gear shift quality not bad for a series land rover but dodgy by all other forms of measurement.
12 seats make it truly useful but it would need 10 of you to be children.
steering lock and turning circle hopeless - and security terrible
With all do respect to the reviewer, I believe that with slight modifications to the carburator and a bit further attention to tune-ups the Stage I is an excellent vehicle. Even in June of 2008, my sister's much valued Toyota Landcruiser only averages 16-18 MPG and it is nearly 25 years newer and supposedly of better technology!
