Shedquarters's review of Palazzo Rimondi

“A lovely setting”

★★★★☆

written by Shedquarters on 14/10/2013

We opted for Crete, and this hotel in particular, because we wanted late sun and warmth, a short journey and somewhere interesting to stay and explore.
This hotel and our holiday fulfilled our criteria.
The accommodation was very well serviced and very clean although the decor is a little 'tired' and could probably do with a freshen up. The plumbing all worked well, although some of it was a little quirky (hot water coming from the cold tap and vice versa) but not a problem once you knew! I think this is probably a 3 rather than 4 star standard hotel and as such is a little overpriced. However we loved our stay there and much preferred it's character to staying in a modern
The staff were charming and very accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
We hired a car whilst we were in Crete. Prior to our arrival I had emailed for info re parking and had a very helpful email exchange with them accompanied by maps, driving directions etc. Please note the Rimondi is in a pedestrian area and you need to park and walk. The closest paid parking is about 100 metres away and costs 7 euro for 24 hrs. However there is free parking on the road that runs beneath the Fortezza and it's an easy walk to the hotel from there. We never had a problem finding a space. The hotel is situated in a warren of tiny streets in the old Venetian town. There are lots of great places to eat. We had only one poor meal in our week's stay. Generally the food was good, and so much better than previous experiences we have had. We had never before experienced the habit all the restaurants had of there being no obvious pudding menu, but bringing a free mini pud and a glass of raki to accompany it - a very pleasant habit !
Breakfast at the hotel was good. It was buffet style. As much tea, coffee , juice as wanted and a mixture of hot and cold foods, with cereals, yogurt etc. The nutty brown local bread was delicious, and we both ate far more of it than was strictly necessary!. Breakfast is served around the plunge pool in the courtyard of the hotel. We were happy to linger over it.
We would certainly consider returning to this hotel.
