“Malaysian charm misquoted”

★★☆☆☆

written by britishconsumer on 15/11/2016

I decided to try this hotel due to its claim for local charm. First impression as my taxi drew up to it, it lacks the grand frontage and glamorous entrances of typical 5* establishments. Check in was straight forward, quick but rather business like, cool if I was there on business, but rather curt when one is in a holiday mood. I'm surprised the hotel shop doesn't stock swim shorts or sim cards. The room itself is typical in size but lack lustre. Shower curtain in bath was old, tatty and stained! Surprised to find no tissues in the room at all, only in bathroom. The desk lacks any credible office stationary except a reduced notepad and a pencil. No hotel pen? The hot beverage offering stocked three packets of coffee and two sweetener, no sugar content of any kind. Didn't realised I've checked into a health farm! However what I immediately discovered to be most annoying and dangerous is the quarter glass shelf fixed halfway in the glass corner of the wardrobe just above the hot beverage counter. This ridiculous glass shelf juts out so far that I bump into it each time Im making coffee. I had to leave a towel hanging over the edge of the glass shelf to remind me its there! I've operated many hotel room safes before but the one on offer here is the most annoying, user unfriendly and seems to only know one reply “error 7”… A visiting relative who parked his car at the hotel car park was told he need not have to endorse his parking ticket at reception and he was able to simply insert it into the barrier which lifted and allowed his car to exit. However, next day, when another relative tried to exit the same way, the barrier wouldn't lift and he was told he had to have his ticket endorsed at reception. Considering the exit road way is rather cramped with cars and hotel trolleys on the side, he had considerable trouble having to reverse and attempt to park up somewhere in order to allow the other vehicles to pass. After he got his ticket endorsed at reception and rushed back to his car, a security guard quite rudely shouted at him about his car being parked there! Breakfast spread is average though the quality is good. At breakfast on my first day, the service was so efficient that when I came back from the buffet, my half drunk coffee and newspapers were all removed and my table was relaid! At todays breakfast, a considerable amount of tables in the middle was cordoned off prepared for a later function. This caused a squeeze on availability of tables for guests. I had a guest with me for breakfast and we had to walk round twice before we got an unlaid table. At one point, when I asked a member of staff for more coffee, he pointed to the coffee station and prompted me to get it myself even though they had been serving coffee and tea at the tables earlier. Tonight as Ive packed ready for my flight tomorrow, I called to book a taxi and was told that it cost much more then what I paid for the airport taxi from the airport to the hotel two days ago, not only that, I was asked to pay in full tonight! When I hesitated, the concierge relented and said I can pay tomorrow at reception but not when the taxi has dropped me off at the airport! When I tried to log onto my airline's website to check in online, the hotel's wifi was showing “limited” and would not connect. I had to text a relative to check in for me. Booking.dom's confirmation documentation states that because Im a Genius, I will get a free welcome drink upon arrival. Well, I arrived two days ago, leaving tomorrow, no free drink in sight, so far! In conclusion, would I use or recommend this hotel? Sadly no, as its certainly not the Malaysian charm I’m used to, definitely not from a supposedly 5* establishment.

John-One's Response to britishconsumer's Review

I stayed in this hotel when it had it's grand opening and paid the princely sum of 46MYR. Looking at the furnishings in current lisings they are identicle to those past days. Shame because the location is good, but the hotel in my opinion is now very overpriced.
