“First time in western Canada”

Written on: 26/07/2013

Could not believe what a great show the Stampede was. Not to mention Calgary itself, and the people of Calgary. Next was Banff and then Jasper, more spectacular scenery and animal life than we had seen in any other part of the Rockies or the Andes. We ate "local", had caribou, elk, venison, buffalo and rainbow trout. While is wasn't "local" we had the best wild boar imaginable. By the way Alberta beef was different than what we get in the states, but equally good in a different way. We then took the train to Vancouver. We have a large compartment with large windows facing north; an most pleasant trip. The car for viewing, the lounge car, the bar and the dining car were all good. Not quite what you would get on Eurail, but good and enjoyable. Vancouver was quite nice, more that we could cover in the time we had; would recommend the aquarium first class exhibits of northern Pacific sea life. Took the ferry down the Inner Passage to Victoria. Once again not enough time to visit everything we wanted to see but we did see Butchard Gardens and highly recommend it.
Our regret is not planning a day or to more in Jasper, Vancouver and Victoria. A minor negative were the hotels we stayed in. While they were rated as better hotels they all had little problems. Failure to had Concierge Service, 80.00+ for breakfast, A/C and plumbing problem, room with a view of the rail yard, not having available room level reserved; however we weren't visiting hotels we were visiting the Canadian Rockies so these little things did not have an effect on a great trip.
