Guest's review of John Fowler, Widemouth Bay Caravan Park

“Not the greatest site on the planet”

★★★☆☆

written by on 28/07/2011

We booked a 5 night break with john fowler widemouth bay, in the camping area, we usually go to newquay but this time decided to try somewhere different and went to bude.
We decided to ignore the 4 p.m book in, and went to reception the second the doors opened at 10a.m, we were allowed to pitch, but the receptionists were seriously miserable, not even a 'good morning' or 'enjoy your stay'.
The campsite area was virtually empty which was seriously surprising, considering it was the first week of the school holidays. And didn't bode well.
At the last second we decided to change to electric hook-up, and on the drive through the campsite to our allocated pitch, i was seriously pleased that we had decided to pay the extra money, as the pitches with non-electric hook up were all on the side of a rather steep hill - which wasn't mentioned on the website. God only knows how these poor people managed, it was difficult to even walk up.
At the site, the key system that they have is totally ridiculous honestly. It is the only site that i have ever known that employs this method, and although they claim that it actually helps to keep the areas clean i can honestly say that it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. It is just unconvienient and unneccessary. The block did get dirty, but with so many people using the area it isn't surprising. I saw cleaners in the block every evening, and they were very throuogh.
The clubhouse was somewhat dated, the entertainment, was very much geared towards the children regardless of the time. It honestly felt as though they weren't really trying hard enough, played the same crappy music every night. As well as playing stupid games, which involved buying tickets of some sort to participate in a animated game. The acts that they had in were also very dodgy, one act didn't show one night so we had to endure singing from the entertainment staff, which was so terrible it was hillarious. I also felt that some of the language used in front of the children was totally innapropriate, such as making fun of gay people. For some reason they also felt the need to hire 'sercuity' bouncers which is worrying, although there wasn't any trouble when we went, i can't imagine why they would need to hire them unless there was a reason why they would need their services.......
The drinks and food in the restaurant and bar were quite expensive for what it is, but to be honest i wasn't terribly surprised considering that it was on-site, i doubt you would find cheap food and drink on site anywhere. The shop also was reasonably priced considering it was on site, as others have mentioned morrisons is down the road which can be used to stock up.
Didn't use the swimming pool so can't comment.
Another gripe is the people that were actually staying on site, most miserable, unconsiderate people, leaving the washing up areas in a disgusting state, yelling at their kids at 1 a.m in the morning, allowing their children to run riot in the clubhouse, and inbetween the tents. No polite exchanges such as 'morning' or 'evening'. No 'please' or 'thank-yous'.
We went to the beach most days, which was walkable, although people with mobility problems, and also those with small children and lots to carry would find it impossible. The first part is walking up a steep hill, along the road, then along a costal path which is quite rocky - although i was able to manage it in flip flops. The beach is nice, not sand but small stones. You do have to watch out for all the rocks on the beach as these can be a bit hazarous. The beach is split into two, one being the dog beach. We tended to stay on the dog beach, as the other beach tended to get crazy busy, with people sitting on top of each other. The dog beach was much more spread out, as long as you don't mind being investigated by dogs occasionally. The water was fab, with quite vigourous waves, perfect for body boarding, surfing or jumping.
In all, although, the clubhouse complaint wasn't a major one, and everything else was reasonably alright i wouldn't go back to this site, or recommend it to anyone else. Nothing about it is welcoming. Its certainly not worth the money that we paid, and finally, is far to quiet for myself and my husband - think we will stick to trencreek in newqauy.

I would wonder if you have ever had a \"terribly suprising\" good comment about anything, infact I am terribly suprised you didnt comment about the angry donkey a few fields away.

Why is the club dated? or was it that it never had strobe lights flashing away?
Obviously, the food is a little expensive as it is ON SITE, where else is it supposed to be?
You mentioned about the kids running about in the club, and games etc, it seems its not that easy to please everybody, kids are given a bit of lee way, but when we was there, parents did control their kids, I dont know whether you are aware but it is a FAMILY HOLIDAY PARK, and as regards the language used, I am sure if you brought it to the ents manager he would have done something about it, and regards making fun of gays, when we was there, last week there was a song called the old camp fire, if this is what you are refering to, then you would see that it was directed at one of the ents staff, which was started off by one of the charactors, and everything and everybody was taken in good fun, if it was offensive in anyway i would have not been used in the entertainment. I spoke to people and we all found it was an enjoyable time and would certainly return next year as we will.
Lastly, about people not being polite and saying good morning etc, they proberbly thought the same to you as you was to them, I had no problems as I spoke to people, and people spoke to me both guests and staff.

Lastly if you can do better then I suggest you get intouch with Fowlers and apply for a job next season and see how hard these guys work, it does not stop at midnight where you can go back to where you was staying, but the staff start when you would still be asleep oh and not forgetting, these guys start the season 2 months before the season starts, and have a hell of a battle keeping kids entertained, especially in the high season.
And the secuity measures are not for being a rowdy site as would be the impression you had, but to enforce rules such as no glasses outside and also patrolling through the night.
Obviously you have many and varied compliants, which you should have mentioned to the park manager at the time and it could have been dealt with, not weeks after.

You obviously work for the company a paying guest couldn't possibly find a good thing to say about this dive. As for the hard working staff! sitting around miserable, and the park manager who thinks its acceptable to shout at paying guests children. This is not a holiday its a boot camp. Surely kids should be able to have fun on holiday in this "family holiday park" what a laugh. Where are you going next year HMP BELMARSH, You'll love it.
