Following A Stroke, Get The Best Support

My son had a stroke in 2022, he left hospital, with very little support, other than ad hoc physiotherapy and speech therapy, which stopped after a few months without any notice.

Who do we turn to for support?, we had no idea, then luckily, a friend told us about the Stroke support charity in Stockport, a weekly drop in centre, where you are so welcomed and a feeling of home from home, a relaxing environment where you can talk to others who have had a stroke, or just sit and listen to their experiences. Not only this, but there is help with benefit claim support, voluntary work support and even employment support. What more could anyone want

Is There An Option To Give This Group More Than 5 Stars?

Where to even begin with this wonderful community of people?

I’m a 32 year old and I suffered a haemorrhage stroke 6 months ago. They reached out to me after I was searching for help and support emotionally and it’s one of the best things to have come from my unfortunate situation. We have weekly meetings which are shears a wonderful and nice boost to kickstart my week of rehabilitation ahead.

The best part of the community is knowing that you’re not alone and you’re surrounded by people that can relate to your feelings and situations on a personal level. It’s very reassuring to know these people have your back and I’ve made friends for life, including the absolutely wonderful gentleman that created this brilliant community.

Stroke is an emotional rollercoaster and I feel a lot better knowing I’m riding it whilst alongside this fantastic community and group of people.

Honest Friendship Group Who Have Been Through Stroke

A brilliant idea by a man who’s recovered a lot of his faculties since his stroke yet still has a heart for others were just beginning on that long road to improving which can go on not just for months but for years.

Confidential conversations shared by those who truly understand, encouragement, sometimes a little shake if we get too morbid but always with love and compassion because we /they know what it’s all about we are survivors.

WhatsApp is invaluable we have zoom meetings once a week we can meet personally if we’re local to Stockport. I feel every area of the country should have a volunteer group like this , after all number of us may not be able to do our old job but we can certainly encourage and help each other get the best out of this extra bit of life we’ve been granted .

Health Advice Site

I have been involved with and aware of Stroke Information as a charity and phenomenal organisation providing support in the form of practical Stroke advice and information (not clearly available elsewhere) via their website and regular drop-in meetings (in the local Stockport area) for those who have suffered with Stroke (and their families / support network). Not only does this charity provide essential guidance and support online for anyone anywhere in the country (and is mainly self funded) they are constantly raising money for local stroke survivors.

This is the place to come when you need unbiased, honest, practical information about Stroke quickly and personally and is run by those who have suffered Stroke themselves and importantly those who also understand the mental health aspects which all too often impact Stroke Survivors.

This is an organisation run 'by the people, for the people.'

This charity does not get enough support; the work they do is truly incredible.

Outstanding Support Network

I first became aware of Stroke information when I was researching support groups in the local area. As a healthcare professional, it is important for me to find out what other support is out there.

As the group is marketed as a drop-in, I called in to gain some more information on the charity, and the support they can offer.

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a smile and a cup of tea.

The group was incredibly friendly and accommodating, I was introduced to all members and included in all conversations. I was given lots of information and heard first hand from the other members on the various support they have received.

Showing up to a group by yourself can be quite an intimidating experience for some people, but I will have no problem referring people to this group. They offer an incredible support system to those affected by Stoke, both to the survivors and their families.

They have already been recognised for their positive impact on the community and have been named as Healthwatch Stockport's Charity of the year.

I think the work they are doing is invaluable to the community, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Fantastic Local Charity Supporting Survivors & Families

Such an invaluable support for those who have had the unfortunate experience of stroke. My mother-in-law has received exceptional support from The person I dealt with and his team over the last few years, and they have supported her with all kinds of things from practical firm filling to emotionally supporting her through difficult times during her recovery and beyond.

The needs of the families of stroke survivors are often overlooked however what this small grassroots charity is so great at doing is connecting with everyone, offering opportunities for building intergenerational relationships and it is truly the most caring and inclusive charity I have had the pleasure of knowing.

5/5 would recommend to everyone!

1st Name I Think Off When Stroke Is Mentioned

The person I dealt with and the team at Stroke information are simply hero's Having got to Know him and see the work he does 1st hand, without hesitation I would refer anyone who has suffered a stroke or is at increased risk of having a stroke to Stroke Information.

I have seen 1st hand the high esteem the charity is held in by the end users and it makes me happy knowing their are charities like this out there on the front line supporting stroke survivors the way they do.

If you have any family history of strokes then please do consider putting your hand in your pocket and support this amazing group of people

Second To None

I would like to register my great regard for the assistance that the person I dealt with has given my

wife who suffered a stroke in August of last year, 2018.

He came to our home recently and spent two hours advising both my wife and myself

as the main carer. Living with a stroke is extremely difficult for both the patient

& carer. His guidance and help has been invaluable in coping with this very cruel

illness. He has been kind and caring enough to share his own experience of suffering

a stroke. This direct experience that he has had reflects in the wise advice that he

has passed on to us. Specifically he understands the difficulties in coping. Many

Thanks to him. Take Care.

Whither Do We Go From Here?

Well what next? A sudden change of circumstances following an unexpected stroke can be unsettling to say the least. The problem is that one finds oneself in uncharted waters and it seems difficult to obtains answers. My overriding problem was myself understood when the initial attack left me with the handicap of temporary aphasia making me unable to communicate with any coherent mouth movement. Frustratingly thought processes were carrying on my head although it was a struggle to convince others I could still understand much that was going on.

My faculties returned to me gradually during the next day or two. Speech has remained impaired a bit during the previous four months since the stroke, but fluency and vocabulary have slowly returned accepting that I still experience the annoying habit of occasionally coming out with words that my own. It sometimes seems that my mouth is on autopilot and things rare said as intended.

I have been fortunate in not experiencing any other effects of the stroke. Cerebral disruption has been limited to speech although failure of communication at the very beginning has suggested mobility and visual which did not in fact exists.

Awareness of the differences in stroke sufferers should take account how people do vary, and how effective communication should always help individuals.
