“Sri Lanka”

Written on: 28/04/2015 by mollysutherlandd (1 review written)

I spent 3 weeks in Sri Lanka with PMGY and had the best time ever. If you're going away for the first time by yourself the support from the staff and other volunteers you become close with is huge and it eventually feels like home from home. Nothing is too much trouble for all the staff in Sri Lanka and they are amongst the friendliest people I have ever met, did not want to say goodbye! I did the elephant project and loved every minute, it was very well run with lots of things to do however it… Read Full Review

“India PMGY Review”

Written on: 24/02/2015 by CobyPerez (1 review written)

I stayed in Delhi on the medical programme. The hosts were very helpful and welcoming, and the accommodation was good - good facilities and friendly atmosphere. The food served at the house was also amazing - very healthy and reasonably varied - and not too spicy which is a plus, especially when catering for large numbers of people and varied tastes! I liked how the placement varied reasonably often, so you had the chance to see a range of different things, and move if you didn't like a… Read Full Review

“A Crazy, Amazing, Eye Opening and Life Changing 8 Weeks”

Written on: 06/10/2014 by sineadholmes (1 review written)

About a year ago, I was bored at work complaining to my colleague that I wanted to do something different, spend a decent length of time somewhere far away, experience something completely new... the result of this conversation was a spontaneous look on Google which led me to the PMGY website. Within 40 minutes of the initial idea, I had applied to go to Faridabad on the 20th July 2014, alone, for 2 months to volunteer at an Orphanage. Everyone thought I was completely insane and were pretty… Read Full Review

“Volunteering for Beginners - A Breeze”

Written on: 02/09/2014 by AnitaMaria (1 review written)

As a first-time mature volunteer I decided on my trip only 3 weeks before departure. After quite a lot of internet research I stumbled on Plan My Gap Year, and from then on, organising the whole trip was a breeze. I noticed they were promoting volunteering in orphanages and special schools in Romania - a fairly new destination for them. I quicky realised this would be perfect for a novice like me as no vaccinations are needed and the flight is only about two and a half hours so it is perfect… Read Full Review

“Teaching Volunteering in Ghana”

Written on: 29/08/2014 by Kizzy-1 (1 review written)

The hosts are a lovely, lovely couple. They've just moved into a swanky new house; which they built together. They are there 24/7 for us; whether 3pm or 3am. I had a bit of sickness whilst away, which was the inevitable with being in a foreign country for 6 months, they were perfect. They looked after me as if I were their own, took me to the hospital and everything - better to be safe than sorry. Been back in England for barely a month and already want to go back. The surrounding atmosphere… Read Full Review

“Fantastic Experience ”

Written on: 14/05/2014 by chuckytull (1 review written)

I would like to first all say a big thank you to the PMGY team and the host family for being so nice, lovely, and welcoming. I can't imagine it is easy having strangers stay in their home for weeks on end but they do everything they can to help you make your experience the best and worry free it possibly can be. In particular, the organising of SIM cards, taxi services, and further travels is what I particularly found helpful. The volunteering was truly an amazing experience! It is definently… Read Full Review

“Sri Lanka 2014”

Written on: 30/04/2014 by Sahiba (1 review written)

I spent 5 weeks in Sri Lanka from Jan to Feb 2014; working both in the orphanage placement and on the teaching English to young Monks project. I had an awesome experience. Sri Lanka is an amazing country and over and above the volunteering, there are many activities to do in the country; from relaxing on the beach, to white water rafting and trekking up the Sigiriya Rock. Prior to joining the programme, PMGY provided me with a lot of support, including calls, emails and a volunteer handbook which… Read Full Review

“A in between experience!”

Written on: 23/04/2014 by Laneyu232 (1 review written)

Pre departure Support/ Handbook- The support before I left for Tanzania was amazing! Every question that I had was answered very quickly and I felt like I was supported from the beginning. The handbook was very useful and gave lots of good information, however there were a few mistakes- there is wifi at the house in Arusha, Tanzania but you do have to pay to use it (not very much!), you each have a 'wardrobe' which has a SMALL lock on it which is not stated in the handbook either. In-country… Read Full Review

Yeah I am going to study medicine in September are you? I think that in terms of the experience of being in Africa and helping etc its definitely worth it and you will be so glad you did it! However in terms of gaining experience in medicine I think its a flip of the coin- where you get placed could be totally different to where I was as there are many places you could end up! Also the main doctor was away where I attended and it may have been very different if she wasn't. I think that you will find that it will depend on lots of different factors and that every day could be different- some days nothing, some days something! Don't just weigh it on what I said! :) Tanzania was amazing even if I didn't get as much experience as I thought I would and I wish I was back there now!

“Tanzanian orphanage”

Written on: 21/04/2014 by Davejane (1 review written)

Couldn't of had a better two weeks at the orphanage in Arusha, Tanzania and so glad I booked with PMGY as they were so fast at replying to any questions I had big or small from enquiring to the end. The volunteer handbook is so detailed with everything you'd ever need to know so that was extremely helpful pre-departure. On arrival I was met by the nicest people who were just as helpful and the country accommodation was perfectly fine! My only regret is that I had such a short time there… Read Full Review

“Diversity in India”

Written on: 14/04/2014 by Dena19 (1 review written)

Thank you PMGY for being a quality organization setting up meaningful programs around the world. PMGY has figured out how to do it - they are very professional, helpful and thorough; providing great pre-trip support and follow-up. Perhaps the most difficult part of volunteering is choosing what to do and where. I especially liked the flexibility of the Faridabad India volunteer experience. Since the volunteer house accommodates the medical volunteers as well as the slum schools, orphanage and… Read Full Review

“Morocco Childcare Volunteering”

Written on: 14/04/2014 by RoxiR (1 review written)

This was my first venture into another country alone... It was the most liberating experience I've ever had- being immersed into a completely different culture and having no choice but to live the life they live. No showers - Roman style bath houses, and the toilet scenario was questionable!! But it was amazing! From the beginning the PMGY staff were very supportive in making sure I had everything organised before my arrival - including paperwork and airport pickup etc. I felt very secure and… Read Full Review

“My experience with PMGY”

Written on: 12/04/2014 by timbogillum (1 review written)

I volunteered teaching English in Vietnam with PMGY. Before I left, PMGY sent me a handbook with all the information I could need on Vietnam, but maybe could have told me a little bit more about the English teaching. I arrived in Vietnam still a little unsure exactly what I'd be doing, namely what age group I'd be teaching and what my teaching would entail. This may be to do with the fact that the teaching is organised by a partner organisation to PMGY so it is not their responsibility. The… Read Full Review

Hi!
I am interested in doing this with PMGY but have a few questions about the teaching.
Were you teaching completely by yourself?
Where you teaching all day?
Did you have anything you had to follow?
Did you have any help when it came to planning?
Thank you!

“I made amazing experiences! ”

Written on: 07/04/2014 by claireso (1 review written)

I really enjoyed the three weeks I spent in Cape Town, South Africa. I felt at home after a few days in the SASTS volunteer house and everyone was very nice and friendly. The only problem I had was when I arrived at the airport in Cape Town - I was told that there would be a person holding a sign with my name on it. After fifteen minutes of looking around desperately, I still could not find anyone with a sign with my name on it. Then I saw a person holding up a sign where it said "SASTS" and… Read Full Review

Right from the outset PMGY was extremely helpful and accommodating to my numerous questions and requests!Everything was in place as confirmed and the volunteer handbook was a great help planning the trip and understanding what was expected from me and more importantly what I could expect! The volunteer house was great, large rooms and well organised and the staff couldn't of been nicer... I volunteered for 4 weeks at a disabled center for children and it was an amazing experience, it was… Read Full Review

“Sri Lanka Volunteering”

Written on: 16/03/2014 by LyricNorth484 (1 review written)

I went to volunteer for one month and had the most incredible time, I found the people of Si Lanka very friendly and relaxed (had an island vibe full of Bob Marley music) Not to mention hoe beautiful it was with the tropical climate and paradise-like beaches... The Volunteering was very good and I did 3 weeks in the medical project which I loved and was able to get a lot out although it was very much the type of thing that you had to be prepared to put yourself out there and ask questions… Read Full Review

“Tanzania Medical Program”

Written on: 05/03/2014

Overall my experience in Tanzania was nothing but positive. Definitely an opportunity of a life time to experience a new culture, meet amazing people, and push yourself to try new things. The memories I have will last a life time. The pre-departure information was great, even coming from Canada I felt as if I could always get ahold of someone to have my questions answered. The only thing I would have liked more information on was my placement, it ended up being very different than I was… Read Full Review

Working in the girls orphanage was so much fun but very sobering, it was clear that they have very little but it was nice to think that we were doing something to help them, the girls really wanted to learn and we had such fun playing games and singing songs with them! The accommodation was fine, I wouldn't have expected anymore, it was sort of like being back at school in a dorm which was fun, I met some great people who il be keeping in touch with now I'm back in England. “More than just a gap year!”

Written on: 21/08/2013

I missed doing a proper gap year back when I was in my early 20s. Now at 32 I had almost written it off but then I came across PMGY. I went to Kenya for 2 weeks (during my summer holidays from my job as a teacher). I worked at the orphanage but also got to check out a local primary school. It is scary doing something like this, especially if you are going alone, but PMGY were helpful leading up to departure and you get given a UK 24 hour mobile number for emergencies so you never feel alone… Read Full Review

“South Africa - Cape Town ”

Written on: 05/08/2013 by fudger8 (1 review written)

Basically loved the whole experience, didn't realise i'd enjoy it that much. Perhaps could have been more organised at the airport and with the events but on the whole a fantastic stay. Thought the support overall was good - laid-back people, a little vague at times, but you have to be responsible for yourself and ask others for help too. Meanwhile the volunteer handbook, although very wordy, covered nearly everything and was useful. The hostel was fairly basic, however you can't complain as it… Read Full Review

“UCL trip to Uganda”

Written on: 01/07/2013

I enjoyed majority of the activities planned out for us. The choice of accommodation was good as well. Communication could have been improved - between the team, PMGY and the Ugandan locals that we came into contact with. It would also be extremely useful if we could have been provided the breakdown of the cost of the trip, just so that we know where exactly the money is being channeled to. Other than that, I had a great time in Uganda. Thank you for the opportunity and it was nice meeting you… Read Full Review
