From the moment my daughter and I found Plan My Gap Year on Google we were impressed with what the organisation had to offer. The key attraction at first was the relatively low cost compared to a lot of other gap year activities and the fact that most of the money goes to the local organisation rather than to the UK head office.
As this was the first time my daughter was going to do anything like this we both had lots of questions. We got on the phone to PMGY and talked to a member of staff who was very helpful and reassuring (slightly worried Mum here). He spoke to both of us and suggested that my daughter send in her online application which she duly did. She was accepted very quickly, and was then sent the Plan My Gap Year book with all the information she would need for her innoculations and travel arrangements.
We had a few problems with booking the ticket - because I used my debit card and wouldn't be travelling we had to fill in all sorts of "release and indemnity forms". I phoned Philip who, again, was very helpful. She had no problems with the airline ticket at all. We had chosen to book this ourselves as it was a little cheaper - my advice would be to book through PMGY - less hassle that way.
All too soon it was time to go, we sent her off on the long flight - we spoke briefly when she arrived in Sri Lanka (she was met at the airport and driven to the volunteer house) but quite soon neither of our mobile phones would connect. However, she rang when she arrived at the volunteer house to say that all was well. Once she had bought a local sim card she could keep in contact whenever she wanted. Skypeing was also a good option, she borrowed another volunteers laptop - connection was a bit iffy but good to see she looked well and happy.
She had the most amazing month in Galle, there were a variety of projects she could volunteer for - the favourite being working with the Street Kids. She made very good friends, did some travelling and gained so much whilst she was there. The volunteer house was very well run, comfortable and safe. She is already talking about doing another trip with Plan My Gap Year - possibly in South America.
I think this is a hugely enterprising organisation, run by two bright, articulate and clever young men - well done!
