This Album, Is, In One Word, Perfection.... Or At

This album, is, in one word, perfection.... or at least as close as you can get with music. The Pixies created Doolittle at the height of their short-lived career. Charles Thompson (AKA, Black Francis) and Kim Deal were already having problems with each other, and the lack of comunication was beginning to bring the band down.... Luckily, these problems didn't show up in the band's music until the next two albums. This album is riduiculously good. Without one weak track, and sprawling many genres, almost all with Punk first in mind, there's really nothing that can compare in terms of sheer enjoyablity.

The album opens with the choatic Debaser, which highlights every positive thing about the band, and is easily one of the best songs ever made. Between the creative lyrics, the interesting duel vocal styles, the thumping bassline, rhythm guitar, and drums melting into each other while the lead guitar wails chaotic abusurdity. It's just too much fun.

From there, the album enters Tame, a perfect example of The Pixies' well known, stop-start technique. With Charles whispering the verses and screaming the one word chorus at the top of his lungs, the song is again, just too fun to not love.

The next track is Wave of Mutilation, a brilliant example of The Pixies' ability to mix surf with punk. Clever lyrics, catchy pop hooks, with the same chaotic qualitys of the earlier tracks make this another fantistic track.

Following that is my favorite Pixies track, I Bleed. Brilliant lyrics, dynamic vocals, and the best bassline I've ever heard make this song incredibly cool.

Here Comes Your Man is the next track, and it's the most outwardly poppy thing The Pixies have ever done. It contrasts the punky nature of the rest of the album with its pop-surf style. It's a fun song that's hard to dislike.

The next track is Dead. The lyrics are filled with dark humor, and the tune is very interesting. Slow, jagged punk is the best way to describe it. I like it a lot.

Monkey Gone to Heaven is next, and boy, what a track it is. Creative lyrics, great vocals, and strong guitar work make this one great.

Mr. Grieves follows it, which not many people seem to think is that great, but I love it. It holds the album's namesake, "Pray for the man in the middle. One who talks like Doolittle." And I like it's deranged lyrics, vocals, and pop/rock-surf style.

Crackity Jones is next, and it's possibly the most insane track on the album. All punk, it's loud, fast, and short. I suppose the insanity of it is due to the subject matter, an insane roommate that Charles had to stay with. If it was longer than the minute and a half that it is, I'd probably like it less, but at it's length, it's a great track.

The next track is La La Love You, which is, IMO, the weakest track on the album. Not saying much though, because it's still very fun. The problems lye in the weak lyrics and the length, it's far too long. It's still a good track though, I never skip it.

No. 13 Baby is the next track, and it's one of the best on the album. Interesting lyrics, a badass tune, and a great instrumental section at the end make this the best track in the second half of the album.

There Goes My Gun is next, and while a fun, quick track, its lack of depth and somewhat boring layout hurt it, making it the second weakest after La La Love You, again though, it's still really good. I never skip it.

Hey follows it, and it's another one of the best tracks on the album. Imaginitive lyrics, a cool beat, and interesting vocals make it a great track.

The next track is Silver, and it's pretty interesting. I like the lyrics, and the vocals. It's not as fun as most of the album is, but it's a great track anyway. I like it a lot.

The album ends with Gouge Away. A brilliant ending track, it's at a mid tempo, and it has creative lyrics, and catchy melody. Not nearly my favorite on the album, but it's a great track, and even better closing track.

Overall, any faults in the album can be ignored due to the rest of the album's greatness. Even most of the bad things about the album aren't really bad, they're just not great. No weak tracks, and it all being fun makes this album have extreme replay value. Another good thing is, even if you don't like a track, you still should be able to like it enough to listen to it because most songs are between two and three minutes. There are only two songs on the album that go over three, and one of them is fantastic.

I reccommend this album to everyone, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
