Delays, Faded Sesaside Glamour - I think my contender for album of the year (I know it's only August, but you have to start somewhere!) has just changed. Previously a close call thing between Franz Ferdinand and Ilya, Delays forthcoming long player 'Faded Seaside Glamour' has just raised the ante with a blinder of west coast harmonies rich with beautiful melodies and catches. Each time I listen I hear something new, and my favourite tracks alternate regularly.
Current favourite has to be the opener 'Wanderlust', laced with soft steel drums and near falsetto yearning vocals this is spell blinding. Last single 'Nearer than Heaven' follows and shows why Delays have made a dent on the Top 40 already - lush harmonies, not too distant from The Thrills or The La's at times, but with more warmth. The track that broke the charts follows - 'Closer to Heaven' is something Fiction Factory may have made in this new millennium. Stunning.
Highlights follow from these three openers at some pace. The slow numbers are handled magnificently falling into near a cappella with 'No Ending' and 'There's Water Here'. 'Stay Where You Are' leans towards shoegazing Happy Monday's style, and 'One Night Away' must be a future single contender with an infectious bounce along melody and hook.
The first single 'Hey Girl' is a real West Coast track that could easily have fallen out of the early 70's. There are 12 tracks in all and each has a place on this outstanding debut album. The warm feel of the Byrds or Beach Boys flows through here, with a modern day tinge.

Your review has made me want to go back and listen again to the album. I LOVED the track "Long Time Coming" but was mildly disappointed by the rest of the CD. It seemed a bit sappy. I suppose I should play things more than twice really.
Just to be pedantic though, the Happy Mondays were not shoegazer, they were baggy/Madchester. Shoegazer bands include My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Curve, and Slowdive. They play very distorted, droning guitar-based songs and tend to be quite mellow (unlike the Mondays who are NEVER mellow and can be considered indie dance). They were so named because they used to stare at their feet while playing live on stage. :).
