Battlefield 2142 (all Started With The Famous Batt

BATTLEFIELD 2142 (All started with the famous Battlefield 1942 which was and still is a much loved game by myself and many, many others!)

Also known and BF2142, it is an remarkable improvement on Battlefield 2, which EA did a remarkable job on, unfortunately team killing was and still is a problem with the 'demo' version, not sure about the full version though.

Minimum system requirements:

Operating System: Windows XP with latest service pack installed DirectX 9.0c

CPU: 1.7 GHz

RAM: 512 Mb

Video Card: 128Mb DirectX compliant video card, Pixel shader 2.0 and above.

Hard Drive space: 1.8 GB of space is required to install the game

Internet connection: 128kbit Cable/DSL connection

This game is based in the future '2142' it contains some of the standard vehicles, still in use today with the military but upgraded, Eg:

Vehicles:

* Tanks (A-8 Tiger)/ Type 32 Nekomata - two versions are the standard track version, and the new hover tank which is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre! - This vehicle also consists of an energy shield which recharges over time.

* APC - Armour Personnel Carrier (AMV-2 Groundhog)/ BTR-4 Romanov- These carry about seven troops each with their own gun turret positioned around the APC, the unique feature is that one soldier can man the high explosive weapon which fires high explodes over a long range, and the ability for the other soldiers to "pod" out (To either eject themselves from the vehicle in an emergency or to board a titan), This vehicle also consists of an energy shield which recharges over time.

* Car (MK-15 Bandit) / UAZ-8 Ocelot - This is a lightweight, non armoured vehicle which relies primarily on speed to avoid being hit, it consists of one driver, one gunner and an open seating position facing backwards, (useful for repairing the vehicle when in transit). This vehicle does not include an energy shield, but does include a Boost feature which increases the vehicles speed for a short duration, useful for getting out of danger fast.

* Mech Walker (L5 Riesig)/ T-39 Bogatyr - this is a Two legged vehicle - remind me of star wars, these are extremely deadly, consisting of a main gun, with high explosives which can be fired, also includes a gunning position on top of the walker to take out infantry and incoming aircraft (with the use of wither the gun or a EMP pulse which disables the controls of the vehicle). These combined with a shield make this one of the most deadly vehicles on the battlefield.

* Gun Ship (UD-6 Talon)/ Type 4 Doragon - This is a remarkably manoeuvrable and deadly flying weapons platform, it consists of a pilot which can manoeuvre, fire missiles, and deploy a shield when required, the co-pilot can use a deadly Gatling cannon, and the ability to use a guided missile which can be controlled to home in on a target over a large distance. This vehicle is not so forgiving if pushed past its flying capability, although a good pilot can easily bring the aircraft back under control, and can actually use such techniques to their advantage.

* Transport Ship UD-12 Shepherd/ BTR-20 Yastreb - This is a multi-task vehicle, it can be used as a gunning platform to assist with the capture of ground target, It consist of around 6 seating positions to ferry troops into a combat zone, it has two main gunning positions and around four standard seating positions which allow soldiers to give firing cover from inside the craft. The soldiers can also utilise the ability to "pod" out in cover a fair distance or to take out enemy troops by landing on them.

Weapons:

* Combat Knife (BJ-2) - This is a useful and mostly satisfying tool to kill people at extremely close range when stealth is required, a good player can take out nearly an entire squad on a Titan if utilised correctly. Used mainly to humiliate other players, the more you get shows how good you are at stealth attacks. You also get the enemies dog tags as a trophy when kill them!

* Pistol (P33 Pereira Pistol/ Takao T20) - This is usually classed as a last resort weapon due to its short range and limited damage capability, useful weapon to a sniper which required immediate rapid fire during a sudden confrontation with an enemy.

* Assault rifle (Too many to list) - This is a rapid fire weapon which is highly useful for taking out enemy at close range, not hugely effective at killing enemy at long distances but with a bit of practise and luck the weapon can be useful at reasonably long ranges. There are a large variety of these weapons depending on which class you select, ranging from machine guns for close range suppressing fire to more accurate, effective, but slower, and ammunition restricted weapons.

* Sniper Rifle (Morretti SR4/ Park 52) - Hugely effective at close and long ranges, this weapon is usually classed as a one shot one kill with some practice, and is extremely useful for taking out large groups of enemy soldiers whilst remaining hidden, not exactly useful for close combat fighting, thus the pistol does increase your odds of survival slightly, but don't count on it.

* Heavy Anti-Tank weapon (Sudnik VP/ Mitchell AV-18) - This anti tank weapon does exactly what it says, fired at the rear of the tank (where it has the least armour) the weapon can usually be a 1 shot one kill weapon, very useful not only for tanks, can be used against various target and is controllable after firing the projectile. Also useful (although not 100% effective) against enemy if other ammunition is running low. Very effective against Titan guns though.

There are other weapons to choose from, including an anti-aircraft weapon which automatically locks onto aircraft and once fired will home in on the target (if kept aimed correctly). You also have the ability to use claymores (mines), high explosive charges (remote detonated), motion mines for taking out vehicles that come into its proximity, these follow the vehicle until they catch up then explode - very useful for hiding next to objects by a road.

You also have scanners which can detect enemy troops in a short area (extremely helpful on the Titan, as well as vehicle scanners).

All weapons are upgradeable and different combinations can be used, depending on you score (Unlocks).

The more you play the faster you will move up in the ranks, BF2142 has its own ranking system which I believe is fair and very satisfying as it gets harder to move up in the ranks as you proceed. The more team playing you carry out and the more helpful you are also counts to your scores, you also get medals, ribbons, pins, Unlocks (these are upgrades of weapons, combat clothing - shock resistant shoes) etc, all helpful to your combat role be it a support or attacking troop.

The goal of the game is to help your fellow soldier by joining a squad and working together to take spawn points, different game modes dictate which spawn points should be taken first (titan being any spawn point, at any time).

A "Noob"- as we like to call them is not a nasty, rude name, it simply refers to a player that is 'new' and inexperienced to the game, you will easily spot a 'noob' running round the battlefield like a headless chicken, be warned, experienced players have no time/patience for such players and they are likely to be kicked from a server if causing inconvenience, especially team killing! This is not tolerated!

A 'Noob' will not last long on the battlefield when one comes up against a formidable foe, e.g. a heavily armoured squad consisting of around 5 - 6 odd personnel.

TITAN - The titan is an airborne assault vehicle, much like the aircraft carrier of today, in a titan battle, the goal is to take over spawn points which double as an automated anti-titan battery system when taken over, these fire missiles at the titans shield, and no one can board a titan until the shield is destroyed. (Still funny to see a "noob" trying multiple times. The titan consists of two main rail guns at the top to take out incoming enemy gun/transport ships, very effective.

It also carries a gun ship and transport ship which re-spawn after a set time, as well as housing multiple titan guns, very effective for covering large parts of the map when the titan is in a convenient spot. The titan also houses two drop pods which can propel a troop across a large distance in a round contained, and breaks up on impact allowing you immediate access to the battle.

To take over a Titan, the enemy must pass through the rear corridors of the ship into the cargo bay, or via the ventilation passageways at the top rear part of the ship. Both of these are usually heavily defended and it is not advisable to go it alone. When inside the ship the enemy must enter the corridors and destroy the core control panels (four corridors and control panels) the two cargo bay corridor control panels must be destroyed before proceeding on top the upper level corridors (shielded door ways) once these are destroyed the actual core in the centre of the ship must be destroyed!!

Usually this catches most of the enemy's attention and a good commander will issue orders to defend the Titan, this is when team work is critical! - as the enemy usually defends the Titan to the last. (This is usually a good time to get a squad together to takeover spawn points whilst they are distracted!)

Conclusion:

There is plenty more topics to cover but I think I have covered more than the basics!

This game is packed full of different weapons, vehicles, equipment, and requires a lot of learning to put the equipment to practice effectively. Although easy to understand and communication is extremely easy with quick navigation menu style statements like in BF2, players will be required to learn new tricks, and new tactics to survive, standing in an open dessert waving your gun around in this game is definitely going to bring unwanted attention your way!

After BF1942 I was hooked, although not as many Mods for bf2142 as there was with their previous games (bf1942, Vietnam, bf2, etc) BF2142 is a success in my book, and with the "northern strike" upgrade it adds a load more weapons, vehicles to the equation. Well worth the money and a hugely popular, satisfying and down right addictive game. Only down side is that other players "noobs" can cause a lot or arguments and simply get in your way. But that goes for any other game too, we all have to learn somewhere!

Go out and buy a copy if your computer system can cope with the requirements! places such as play.com do very good deals on such games, with free delivery (brand new of course), much cheaper than some high street stores, shop around!
