Irvine Welsh, Porno Is, For All Intents And Purpos
Irvine Welsh, Porno is, for all intents and purposes, the sequel to Trainspotting. Sickboy is trying to make a porno film. He's aged and is no longer as good looking or successful with the ladies as before. Begbie is just out of prison and just as angry as ever. Spud is still a loveable loser who has not quite managed to kick his drug habit and who has lost a girlfriend and child as a result. Renton is a successful club owner in Amsterdam who wants to make things right with Spud and his ex-teenage paramour Diane is a graduate student. The story starts on several different (and rather graphic and adult) tangents which entertwine effectively and which keeps the tension high and shows how these characters have changed and yet stayed very much the same. It's not the best book Welsh has written, but it was nice to see these old characters again and it's good to see that Sickboy finally exposed as the loser that he always was.
