The Last Cut Michael Pearce Poisoned Pen

The Last Cut

Michael Pearce

Poisoned Pen, Feb 2004

ISBN: 1590580672

Attempted sabotage to blow up the Barrage's Manufiyah Regulator that controls the flood waters of the Nile River shakes up the elite of Egypt, whether they are Egyptian or British citizenry. Because of the importance of this matter, the Mamur Zapt Gareth Owen as the Chief of the Secret Police investigates who tried to incapacitate the system.

Gareth quickly learns what a regulator is and that this is the last year for the Cut that starts the annual irrigation process as the ebb and flow is undergoing a modernization. He wonders if the Lizard Man as many reported as the culprit really tried to destroy the regulator so that no more "gates" would interfere with his beliefs. Still Owen has some doubts as this strange Lizard Man, without his assent, could easily be used as a front to hide someone else's identity. The case turns nastier when the murdered body of a young female is found that may be a ritual killing, but more likely is simple murder.

No one brings to life a bygone era inside a mystery better than Michael Pearce does with his Mamur Zapt Egyptian historical tales. The series vividly describes early twentieth century life in Egypt with insight into the varying cultures as few books can. THE LAST CUT is a great tale that showcases Egypt during a previous period filled with change. Owen remains a strong figure walking a thin line of trying to keep the Brits, the Egyptian hierarchy, and several religious groups at bay yet have all satisfied with his efforts. Another powerful historical tale from a magician who sends readers on time travel treks.
