There is a fault on the NEC E606, you must call 3 with your problems they will either take it from you and repare it or they will give you a ref number and you take the phone to the mobile phone warehouse and they will fix most of the problems. Problems include:
Turning its self off.

Having lived with my NEC E606 for 6 months. What can I say, this mobile phone looks like a brick. But running costs excellent, if you want a phone to talk on. 12 hours x net a month for £35. stay off the multimedia content and you cant go wrong.

Do Not Ever Buy This Phone You May Get Plenty Of F
DO NOT EVER BUY THIS PHONE you may get plenty of features but you need a stopwatch to measure the battery life. This is the most annoying phone I have had the misfortune to own. Unless 3G start supplying Nokia I am changing network as soon as i can get out of the contract
Agree. Everything about this phone and this company is bad. The tariff is ok, but ultimately pointless as you can never stay on line long enough to make up the minutes. There is a massive and unintuitive menu system, and simple activities like typing a text message are cumbersome. The company is out to make money from you and will not help you. The customer services people are clueless, and you cannot speak to second line support until you have waited for 20+ minutes in a queue, and then explained all your problems to a polite but inept 1st line support in India. You will usually be cut off or the call will have dropped by then, so you will have to go through the same thing for the rest of the day. Utterly dreadful, and I am talking to a lawyer to work out the best way to deal with them. They have given me my second new phone (because the first one never worked). The new phone also froze mid conversation (could only be remedied by removing the battery) and so 3 took it off me for repairs. When I got it back, the phone locked up again within minutes. They are now saying that this phone is no longer available so they can't replace it. All they can do is give me the nearest model, but I would have to pay £300 for the privilege. The worst company, with the worst phones and the worst service and no customer care. Pay more and go with any other network. You will regret going with 3.
Absolutely correct, as soon as my 12 months is up I am going to set it up on a tee and hit it with my driver. Dreadful phone, no battery, no games (unless you buy them, three days later you can buy them again) Keeps crashing, I could go on for ever, I was going to leave my mobile number in case anyone was thinking of buying one, but you would never get through.

Bought This Nec E606 Mobile Phone On The Kit Tarri
Bought this NEC E606 mobile phone on the KIT tarrif from 3 when they only had there 2 monthly tarrifs. After finding how bad the service was (more detail below) I returned the phone within 5 days (having not made any calls outside my 'free' allowance) only to have them bill me £70 for the service! After they agreed this was incorrect they insisted the bank had to reverse the DD and the bank insisted 3 should refund me, took over 4 months to get my money back!!!!!!!
The phone at first look is pretty cool! It has lots of features, a nice screen, good sound etc. but all these are completely overshadowed by a few very bad points
1) Battery life is DIRE!! should have know this was going to be a problem when they told me it came with 2 batteries AND 2 chargers! If you use the phone at all then 4-8 hours MAX if you dont use it you would still need to charge it without fail every night!
2) Download and keep content! Sounds great except half the stuff is time limited. Download a game and you either pay credits every time you play or you have to re-download every 3 days (again at the expence of time and credits!!!!!
3) Reception is terrible. Dropped connections even in 5 bar reception areas. Most functionality is only available in very specific places otherwise it drops back down to a 2G service (ie no video etc)
Overall I was very unimpressed and won't be buying a NEC phone again!

I'm Constantly Using It As A Mp3 Player Where Eva
I'm constantly using it as a mp3 player where eva I go(I just carry a spare battery with me for the day) every morning b4 I head to work I download a new set of songs(usually between 16-20 songs)
Service has been good so far(I rarely have any drop outs)
Customer service is average, I have never had to wait 2 long before getting assistance but I have found their knowledge is a little limited when it comes to the technical aspects of the nec606.
I am also very happy with the deal I signed up for, I rekon the rates were very reasonable & I went to all the other major playas & they could not compete.
I break down movies in to 5mb sections & I also watch movies occassionally on the train on my way to work.
I've been surfing the net on this phone & I found it quiet reasonable as long as you are familiar with the web pages you are surfing.
I find Java games application on this phone is adequate & are good enough to keep me entertained for a while.
I regard the external speaker as one of its greatest features, the sound is good quality & the volume it produces is suprisingly loud & clear.
I found the phone a little hard to navigate at first but now I can get around this fone blind now.
So in summary, when I take all these features into consideration, I recommend this phone to everyone I know
My NEC E606 does not have an MP3 player. If it did then it may make up for the other shortfalls of the phone and the service.

I Bought This Phone Almost As Soon As They Started
I bought this phone almost as soon as they started giving away to 750minutes for £35 a month, my girlfriend also got one at the same time, we both had contracts with t mobile that we were fairly pleased with but seeing how 3 was new and looked kind of cool we thought we'd give it a try. Several months into my contract with 3 i'm now wishing i'd never bothered, the nec606 is absolutely the most appaling phone i've ever owned, and beleive me, i've owned some bad phones. It takes several attempts to connect each call, i would say that over 90% of calls made and recieved get cut off part way through, the phone will lose it's connection to the network at random but still show 5 bars, when it is connected caller ger put through to voicemail straight away, i then get a text message 3 days later saying i have a new voicemail 2 days after i've deleted it. Text messages can sometimes take hours to arrive or sometimes not arrive at all but you still get charged.
As for 3's customer service, you might as well not bother, but then again what chance have you got when you're speaking to someone in india who can't really speak english all that well. I've tried to set up a direct debit 4 times now without success. I phoned up to pay an overdue bill and to try and set up another direct debit only to have to spend 20 minutes telling the operator how many digits were in a switch card number, after the bill was paid my phone had a bar placed on it, i called again and another £120 was taken even though i only owed them £35, it then took them nealry a week to lift the bar on my phone. 3 have admitted that this phone is not upto scratch, what the hell they were thinking in selling it i don't know, and i pity the poor people who paid £400 for it when the network first launched. My advice to anyone is, stay away from this network, at least until it's had time to mature and at all costs do not get an nec 606.
I Purchased The Most Awful Phone And Phone Service
I purchased the most awful phone and phone services. The NEC e606 mobile phone from the Three Mobile network is a terrible pathetic phone and no-one should go out and buy one. I have owned the phone for approx 26 days and have been told by the Three mobile network that I am not allowed to terminate my contract. The problems I have had are: the phone has full signal, yet 50% of incoming calls divert to voice mail, most of the time there is no signal - I have to keep disconnecting then connecting the battery to receive a signal again, sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. The phone battery runs out within hours even if you have not used it to its full potential, I have to carry around a phone charger with me at all times! I feel the phone works only 50% of the time and I feel really upset that I am tied into a 12 month contract and there is nothing I can do. I complained and Three said they would send out a new handset and new battery, I asked what would happen if the same problems persisted I was told that I would have to take it up in writing. I can't believe such a faulty phone has been allowed to sell in the market place - somebody please phone watchdog.
My advice: do not join the Three mobile network, do not purchase a NEC e606 phone - you will not receive the service you are looking for when you purchase a faulty phone.
I haven't got a NEC606, but I've got a Motorola A920. When I purchased the phone they said I had free insurance. Now that I've lost it they're trying to tell me I haven't got free insurance. I've spent 4 hours in total on the phone trying to sort this out....a week later still nothing. I've faced all the other problems above aswell. There must be something we can do. We need to join forces. If anyone has any advice for me please contact me on [email protected]. I'm a three user...GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!
I too agree with the original comments, my battery dies on standby without using it (which I dont have a choice in as it never works) after 4.5 hours. On occasions it can take me up to 2 days to make an outgoing phone call as a three out of service tone is made when I try to dial out. I have my friends contacting me on my land line to advise me when they ring me they receive a message saying there is a fault on my mobile line, I have had my phone and simcard replaced and still the same problem. When the phone does work which is only around 25% of the time, I get cut off without fail within seconds of the 5 minute mark, when I ring back as soon as the phone registers I have been on 5 minutes it cuts me off again, this is extremely stressful as I can never hold in a queue to actually tell three regarding the problems without ringing them on a landline which is at peak rate which cost me £5.00 a time. To make things worse I am on a videoplan 750 tariff which allows me 750 minutes to any network free of charge. However three have taken it upon themselves to charge me at three to go rate, which is much more expensive. I have been charged this for four bills out of the eight I have been with them. My last bill was over £60.00 for using 350 minutes which should be free. I have complained many times at my expense on a landline as I cannot use my three phone as I am unable to hold the 30 minutes it takes to get through to them, only to be told "yes you are on the 750 plan and yes you are being charged the wrong rate and we will look into it". Four months later they still take the wrong amount from my direct debit and are "still looking into it and waiting on the billing department which the general public cannot speak to" I have been told that if I cancel my direct debit they will take legal proceedings against me and if I try to canel the contract they will charge me £250.00. It is bascially legalised fraud.. ANYBODY THINKING ABOUT JOINING THREE - DO SO AT YOUR PERIL. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE CHEAP PRICEPLANS AS I WAS.. IT ISNT AS IT SAYS ON THE TIN !!!!!!!!!!
I too, have a e606 on the 'three' network. Not trying to insult anyone here, but everytime I ring customer services to try and complain i end up just politely saying bye as the accent of the people on the other end is awful. I can never really understand a word they say. I have the same problems with my phone, rubbish battery power, skippy videos, extremely poor signal. I am not at all happy about my phone but sadly am i tied to the 12 month contract! I think the amount people are writing on this subject shows that generally people are not happy at all with 'three'. I think this company is going to go bust, and all us are going to be left with a useless phone, a waste of money and being the victim in a very stupid move from 'Huntchinson 3G'!
I also have one of these phones NEC e606. When I got mine I was told by 3 that the phone would work in USA the main reason for getting the phone. It does not as it is a dualband? handset. I too am receiving the service as you mentioned, very poor in fact. I have been promised a new Motorola A920 triband phone however 7 weeks later I am still waiting to get it. I have written to watchdog.

The Nec E606 Has A Good Screen And The Video Play
The NEC e606 has a good screen and the video play back is great for downloaded movies. Shame the speaker faces the wrong way for watching the movies. The deal with Three is great value for money.
Absolutly dire ringtones as standard. The phone call quality on 3g is rubbish with the sent voice often cuts out intermitently. I had four weeks where the phone would only work on 2g. unfortunately I live and work in a 3g area and you can not chose to use only the 2g network. Video and picture quality are still pretty ropey and need good light levels to see anything. Battery life is appalling. Two batteries are supplied with two chargers but the battery must be on the phone to charge hence the phone is nearly always plugged into the mains. starting to wish I never brought the thing.
in a nutshell plays movies well but is not very good at being a phone.
update!!!!
Now on third handset in as many months. It has just started to malfunction again. Not accepting incoming calls and broken out going voice on voice calls. Taken over three weeks (at least ten hours on phone to customer service) to get customer service to agree that there is a problem. Now Three won't replace the phone they will only repair it which will take at least three working days. the price is right but the customer service is very substandard. I urge you not to buy this phone as it is the worst piece of so called technology that I have ever owned.

Having Owned A Nokia 3510i On T Mobile For 6 Month
Having owned a Nokia 3510i on T Mobile for 6 months I knew there was no way I could have a phone without a colour screen again. I mentioned this to the salesman in Carphone Warehouse as I went to chose an upgrade as my contract was due to run out. He piped up that maybe I should try a 3G NEC e606, a suggestion I balked at as I live in South Wales and we are usually the very last to get anything, so I assumed the signal strength would be non-existent. My mind was made up when she allowed me to play with the store's demo model. I signed up and the phone arrived the next day.
I could not have imagined it would be this brilliant! The phone itself is a little larger and heavier than any of the current 2G phones available, perhaps weighing in at a similar amount to a small PDA but it still fits in your hand quite nicely. The first thing you notice of course the high colour screen - 65,000 colours to be exact. The menu can be a bit fiddly but then again I've always had a Nokia phone more or less for 4 years so I guess I've been a bit spoilt when it comes to user-friendliness. One thing which takes a bit of getting used to is the the fact that phone is set to 'ABC' texting by default which means you have to physically chose T9 predictive text each time you sent an SMS.
It's small, finicky things like this which are the bad points really. I've read reports of the phone being really buggy, locking out etc but I've never had a problem like that, it's worked very well for me. As for the whole 3G signal, as I live close to the M4 (the mobile companies like to get good signals near main motorways before they reach out to more rural areas) I'm lucky enough to be able to get a good signal just about everywhere. I work in an office block in Swansea and the signal only went down 1 bar when I was deep inside the building.
Now on to the reason that 3G phones will be HUGE - video calling.
This is nothing short of incredible, words cannot do it justice. Actually watching the person you're talking is an amazing experience. You need to use the hands-free for this but it's ok really. It has a camera facing you and one away from you so you can film your lunatic mates too, which WILL happen as soon as they find out you've got the phone!
I went on to the 3G portal and downloaded some football clips which again was very impressive, although close-up action looked a lot better.
The phone has polyphonic ringtones of course but you are encouraged to download (buy) more as the ones which come as standard are, in professional terms, naff.
The casing is quite nice, silver on top with a holographic '3' symbol, and underneath is black, where you'll find the battery.
Ahh yes, the battery.
You are given 2 batteries and 2 chargers with the phone and boy do you need them. On a full charge, assuming you'll be using say 30 minutes of video-calling or video-playing, you'll need to charge it again at the end of the day. Normally you can leave a 2G phone for about 2 days before charging again, not this phone, I suppose that's the main drawback of having the ability to play video clips.
It's a very classy looking phone, add the fact you can use it as an MP4 player and can record 12 seconds of your own video clips and altogether it's a pretty impressive bit of kit.
Ignore all the soothsayers who deride this phone - as an entry level handset, you cannot get a better introduction in to the world of third-generation mobile phones!
I feel that this review doesn't do justice to the appalling battery life of this phone. Anyone who works away from home HAS to remember to carry a charger with them, even if staying overnight. You can leave early in the morning for a meeting in London (I live in Cardiff), and by 7pm the phone is dead. It really is absoutely appalling. It does all the 3G stuff, which is very cool, but the silver casing wore out very quickly, looking tatty and messy after only a few months.
In my experience not many 2G phones require charging every "2 days" - anyone with a Nokia (I also have a 6310i) will be used to charging the phone once every 5,6 or even 7 days.
This review was written in September 2003 so I guess things have moved on since then but please, trust me, avoid this phone like the plague - the battery life renders it unusable on so many occasions. I've just upgraded to a LG U8120 (it's actually my girlfriends phone) - and it's a world better in the battery life department.
Come on Nokia - you missed an excellent opportunity in the 7600 - who wants a phone that looks so ridiculous? Give me a normal looking Nokia phone with Nokia life and software and 3G functionality - I want it NOW!!!

Superb Phone For Professional People Like Me. It I
Superb phone for professional people like me. It is not for kids to play Java Games. Packed with so many different features and value for money (500 free mins per month for 25 quid).
Reception, colour and ringtones are all superb.
Well living in london we only normally get a 2g service. when we do get to a 3g service its still no better. The phone should never come onto the british market!!!..with this the customer services are appauling and to me i am no longer going to pay my contract with 3 as to me they cannot supply me a service or a phone that works then why should i pay the bills...im sure many of you agree there on this one.
I think you are all living on planet Zod!!!!
I would class myself as Mr Gadget man, If given the option now, I would choose 2 empty bean cans and a piece of string. Good door stop not much else!!!
yes the service is getting better but i worry for the upgrade service and the sim error that my phone keeps getting.
The coverage is improving every day.
This is a well packed phone, with lots of features if you can be bothered to learn how to use them. Lets face it most of us bought it not for its looks, but for the tariff.
The main problems are battery life (which can be increased by turning off the backlight on the normal profile) and the reliability of the handset and the nightmare of dealing with 3 (in India and their own poor internal communications)when it comes to replace it
what about the reception which was poor when out side three coverage (which was transitory anyway)
