I booked a first double driving lesson for my son. He is a reluctant learner and lacks confidence. As a graduate engineer he finally accepted he has to learn.I persuaded him away from his choice to the AA: they are a driving association with an established reputation and therefore worth the extra cost, said I.

The initial process is easy: register and give a postal address and mobile telephone number. A list of available slots comes up, you tick the slot you want and then pay. A text is then received confirming the date , time and instructors name. My son had 7am Monday morning.
7 am came and went, 8am came and went. We tried to log on to the pupil page. A message that it was currently not working.

Finally at 8:30 we rang AA. When they book a lesson it is a matter for the instructor to accept or reject. This is not stated n the booking page or in the terms and conditions. If the rejection is not received until or picked up out of office hours there is no system for notifying the pupil. The text did not indicate the lesson was subject to further confirmation.

I explained breach of contract, offer ,acceptance consideration . At this point I was told they had no instructors available in my area but could refund my money in 3-4 working days.

It would appear that at the date they sold me a service they had no service to sell, obtaining money by deception in any other circumstances.

We are current6ly awaiting a call back to see if they can bring a driver from outside in. I am not sanguine. I think they just wanted us off the phone.

Some 3 hours after the booked lesson my son has still received no phone call to say the lesson is cancelled.
