Charles Dickens will long go down as the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era whose works often concentrated on the social injustices and hardships of the Industrial Revolution era Britain. A master of creating poetic prose and imaginatively inventive stories that were both unique and insightful social commentary, his works are considered high satire with regard to the aristocracy, and fierce criticism of poverty and the dehumanisation of the working classes. His works include many popular tales that are still extremely popular and relevant to this day, including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Great Expectations Hard Timesand A Tale of Two Cities. Many, if not all of his works have been adapted to the stage or screen, including Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver!, A Christmas Carol in many different guises and the David Lean classic, Great Expectations. |
