“DO NOT BUY FROM HIPPO”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Natashawebb77 on 19/12/2023

Purchased a vehicle that was delivered with the EML on. I was told to accept the car and take it to a local garage so that it could be rectified. That I did and the garage said the vehicle - a 3 year old vehicle is not fit for purpose and should not be on the road. I informed Hippo and they did not accept the garage findings so they sent an independent expert to inspect the vehicle. 2 weeks I had to wait and that happened yesterday. He told me that the car is a hazard and must not be driven. Surprise surprise I’ve not heard from Hippo since and numerous phone calls have not been returned. The customer service is shocking. Not only did I purchase the vehicle I purchased extra service plans and insurances yet conveniently nothing I have helps me. I’ve lost 2 weeks of work already because I’ve not got a car and forked out on taxis to get my children to and from school and after school activities. Special mention to the team manager. She’s the one I spoke to on the 7th December and I’ve not heard from her since. Absolutely shocking customer service from one of the worst companies around.

Car broke down after 2 months, left with no car for 4 weeks. Whole new engine rebuild costing over £4000. Refused to pay out for over 4 weeks. Left me with no hire car. I lost out of 10 days of work. Appointment for my disabilitied son have missed. I have problem with walking and my back and they have left my family with nothing. They took my money but when it comes to help they are definitely not helpful at all and left me is so much distressed. Please never get a car from here.

“Anything goes wrong you will get little help”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Leonie0307 on 13/04/2023

Absolute nightmare if anything goes wrong with your car. Within a month of purchasing a car through Hippo the engine went. They won’t provide a courtesy car or take the car back until after a diagnostic report done and the garage they provided can’t get it done for two more days. Been without a car for 6 days now and they lack any empathy or care for how upsetting and frustrating it is to be provided a car not fit for purpose. Really disappointed and gutted at the service received.

“Very worst dealer in UK - Hippo Motor Group”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Dileeprdy88 on 06/03/2023

The very first day I bought the vehicle I found the problem with brakes, oil leakages and gap between the bannet and doors which looks like accident vehicle. For the same thought return back but the account manager comprised me that they will carried out all the damage repairs on their own. All set and given my car to the garage for which they have kept vehicle for 3 weeks to set the bannet and door gaps. Later given the vehicle next time for oil leakages for which they have taken 2 weeks time. But still oil leakages continues as there are multiple damage. Repeated several times but still they found multiple damages in that. So then after 3 months contacted Hippo customer care manager that want to return the vehicle as there multiple damages in the engine but she said they will be charging £1500 if want to return the car at that moment and said they will be still carrying out the repairs. At last oil leakages stopped after 5 months. But now I found sounds from the right front wheel for which I given to Halfords and they come up with £720 bill for replacing Hub and bearings. For the same contacted Ramp warrant they denied the repairs as it’s doesn’t cover under there policy and contacted Hippo for the same as I have chosen plan of Hippo protect from the very first day of my car purchase and paying monthly £24. Now I got final message from customer care manager that they are unable to cover this expenses as per their policy. Now my thing why I should put from my pocket as I have rarely used car and all the time I spent my time and efforts to the garage itself I am spending 12k on car but Hippo is no way bothered simply denying me. Also they have promised me that 172 checks will be carried out to the car before delivery but on real nothing is happened except washing the car

“HIPPO MOTOR GROUP AKA HARRY WORMWOODS CAR SALES!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by LucyDarabi on 13/02/2023

Purchased a 69 plate Range Rover Evoque with 19,232 miles on the clock from Hippo on Saturday 21st January 2023. Firstly, I was sold this car under the assumption it has 8 months manufacturer’s warranty left, it didn’t. The engine check light came on on Sunday 22nd January 2023 – I immediately contacted Hippo who advised me to take the car to a local independent diagnostics company. Fast forward one week, the company who ran the diagnostics uncovered that not only had the engine check light been turned off by Hippo but the car actually had 39,449 miles on the clock!!!! Over double what the company had sold it to me with. Absolutely unbelievable and unheard of. The top and bottom of it is to never use this company, upon reading other bad reviews, which are all about the cars and the aftersales, it appears I am not the only person who has been a victim of Hippo Motor Group, but I’m so lucky that this happened to me within the 30 day right to reject period under the consumer rights act, as I’m sure this would have been a different scenario. Even more shockingly, Hippo Motor Group suggested that I should have been charged for the 556 miles I put on the car in the 2 weeks I had it, in which 200 of them would have been getting the car from Blackburn to Doncaster, then from Doncaster to Blackburn – but they kindly decided to ‘let me off’ with this as the initial ‘gesture of goodwill’! I would advise them that they just change the clock back to the desired number of miles they want this car to have!! I honestly do not know how this company has a turnover reported in 2021 of £78m, the business model this company follows is clearly one lacking in morals and ethicality and they simply do not care about you once they have your money, and the car has been driven off the forecourt. When challenging agent he told me that it was contractual to charge me for the miles put on the car, how can anything be contractual with this car that is illegal I asked? He proceeded to tell me that the car they had sold me was legal as far as they are concerned as they bought it with 19,232 miles on it. The diagnostics company showed in black and white that the engine check light was clocked at a mileage that takes it to their forecourt as well as the fabricated service book that would add to evidence that Hippo clocked the mileage, also, how do you miss that this has happened to a car if it really wasn’t hippo who have done it? I thought that they do 300 point checks on their cars? NOPE! Another side note, bought this car on 21.01.23, still not got the log book? Seems weird doesn't it, bet they never sent it off, so now this car on DVLA website still looks as though it only has one owner! Crafty. DO NOT USE Can finally post this now I have all of my money back that took almost 2 weeks to recover!!

“Hippo deserve no stars”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Debbie121168 on 09/09/2022

Hippo do not deserve one star. I was sold a car with significant issues, I accept these things happen and it is at this point I expected Hippo's 'impeccable customer care' to kick in, but my experience when trying to get the issues sorted was painful, stressful and what became clear was Hippo do anything to avoid accountability. Customer service and care is non existent. They do not reply to emails, take calls and ignore customers with genuine issues. I paid 24K for the car, it was supplied with a leaking windscreen, 3 near bald tyres, a badly corroded exhaust heat shield, it needed an aux belt and tensioner, a new rear diff pump, all were issues from day one. Daily I am still soaked when driving the vehicle, we are now 3 months down the track with out resolution, apology, recognition that their service has been shockingly poor. Indeed the customer service team leader said: it is drivable,I have asked 6 times for the name of a senior member of the team to raise my case with, I still have had no name offered. Hippo accept no responsibility and want the warranty company to pay for all repairs despite the car being supplied with these issues. I have never experienced service like this and actually it has made me feel more frustrated, disempowered than I ever have. Hippo maintain a stead fast lack of care stance. I am still awaiting a resolution, interest or even acknowledgement! This has genuinely been an absolutely awful experience and it wasn't the car but the company that has made it so. I was so excited about my new car, I now hate it, it is unreliable, leaks, I had to be recovered after the corroded part dropped off whilst driving and it has been a constant battle to get to the point where some issues have been rectified. I would certainly not recommend anyone to buy a car from this company.

“Do not use them they couldn’t use the car for over 3...”

written by Rhyscampbell on 13/07/2022

Please avoid this company they lost the paperwork for my car couldn’t drive it for over three months took them over three months to sort it and rejected a refund I’ve asked for many times the director won’t refund me when I couldn’t even use the car due to his companies fault having to buy another car now and wait for the FCA and ombudsman’s to get our refund. From customer services all the way to the finance director it’s brutal beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. They really don’t care over a month got a reply or a call back at points but when your buying it’s fast we’re quick to collect the payment slow to give me a car I could drive for over three months This company don’t take responsibility for the mistakes they make I’m not stupid and I’ve kept everything in writting happy to now get them looked into and investaged companies that sell cars need paperwork it’s simple not with this firm £15k down the drain do not use them unless you want to get a car without paperwork and not be fixed for over three months borrowed my brothers car hired cars took time off work the lot just shocking how much they couldn’t care less after getting paid avoid at all costs read below many others with the same or similar issues

“Avoid Avoid Avoid”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jxBuchanan182 on 30/06/2022

Be very wary of this company. I bought a high end £50k plus vehicle from them - drove off and car one week later broke down after acting in a very dangerous manner. Turns out, they had sold it to me and let me drive it out of their forecourt, with the car having a critical safety recall from the manufacturer outstanding and not attended to. They couldn't give a toss-getting them to rectify or even assist to rectify has been a major uphill battle. Buyer beware - get ANY car you intend to buy from these hoodwinks thoroughly checked over in whatever way possible, DVLA website etc. before you hand over your hard earned £££. In fact, best advice I can give is just to use a reputable company.

“Salesman G Grundy stopped communicating with me when I...”

written by Denssity on 21/06/2022

Salesman G Grundy stopped communicating with me when I started asking questions about the 172 point check. The cambelt was due for a change however Mr Grundy told me they don't deal with cambelts despite thier website stating they do! Car turned up full of scratches and 6 months worth of muck and tree sap on it. They also fabricated something on thier computer systems to say the cambelt had been changed I made a complaint and was advised tough it's a used car so they sent me 35 pound for a valet and posted out a paint touch up pen ( the cheek of it) I've since discovered the car has been in an accident and has been poorly repaired financial ombudsman is involved now

“Best spend elsewhere ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Fusiliers on 06/06/2022

I got a car on finance with hippo very recently and has turned into an expensive problem. This car was meant to be an upgrade to me but has been problematic from the first week of ownership this place must buy any motor off the street plug a code reader in erase any codes showing on the car and sell it on for a nice profit. So now I’m left paying all of my military pension out on a car that was to get me to see my children and for me to get to appointments and now I can’t do either as the car has been in the local Ford garage with problems that are hard to sort as the warranty company are very slow to respond to work required meaning my vehicle has been in the garage now longer than I have driven it and is just costing me money and causing myself further stress when I suffer with PTSD already. This should not happen when your spending your money on a vehicle from a company stating that the vehicles are in resale condition and then finding out the vehicles are probably bought from previous owners in poor state and nothing done to those vehicles before resale is disgraceful. Hopefully this review will find people before they depart with their hard earned money with this company. I will also be informing any relevant departments on my issue as this should be investigated thoroughly to ensure that vehicles sold in the future are safe and to what the customer is expecting when they have driven the vehicle for more than a week. I would imagine the company owner to be disrespectful and a bully that enjoys his nice fat wallet each month whilst those “below” have to chose either see family or eat food now he has my money in his wallet though that doesn’t matter to him! My advise to anyone looking to purchase a vehicle from hippo would be to go evans halshaw or another local reputable company and not put any more money into this company at least until they can resolve the obvious issues as there are so many reviews on different forums stating almost the same problems with most customers!

“Let down”

written by Ximenan331 on 17/11/2021

Had the car for 4 weeks 3 days and so far broke down multiple times and so far spent 3 and half weeks in a garage. No one wants to talk to you it's email only. CEO hides behind his team . As the owner he should be a beacon for his company negative or positive. Its how you right the wrongs that makes you stand above the rest. Clearly this isn't his mantra. Businesses need customers. No customers no business sometimes the top guy forgets this in their bubble of supremacy

I bought a 2011 BMW 5 series from this awful company in march 2016 since that date I have had to pay for a new alloy wheel as one of them was cracked and hippo refused to replace it...I have also had to have a new gear box installed along with a new clutch and dual mass flywheel, avoid at all costs. It is the worst company I have had the displeasure of dealing with

written by xiHopper78 on 18/09/2016

Taken 4 months to discover the car purchased for you has been in an accident. Reported problems on day 1. Now in the process of rejecting the car! In the 4 month period I've only had the car in my procession for 14 days. Rest of time has been spent in garages! You, hippo motor group, have made my life so stressful these last four months. Due to all the stress this has affected my health greatly.

“Held to ransom”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Alfie1963 on 31/08/2016

Contacted this company a week ago when searching for a personal lease vehicle. Initial contact was good, the salesman responded well to my enquiry. A suitable vehicle was available, finance was secured and within a couple of hours the distance selling was done. All seemed well until an unexpected change in my circumstances prompted me to test the 14 day cooling off period. I was told I would have to pay 3 months worth to them even though I had not even paid a deposit if I wanted to cancel ! This was not explained before I signed the finance papers, I believed I had 14 days to change my mind. So much for the cooling off period. Now that I could not afford to pull out of the deal I arranged to pick up the car six days later. The day before I was due to collect the car I received a call from them telling me they were sorry but they would not be able to deliver my vehicle on the requested date due to their delivery driver being ill. I explained that I was not expecting a delivery but was coming in the next day to collect the car..... 150 miles later I arrive at the swanky dealership, lots of high end cars on show, very impressive indeed. Met the salesman who then took me outside to see the car. The car was very poorly prepared, patches of paintwork were unwashed, glass was dirty, interior was ok. On closer inspection one of the tyres had a gash in the sidewall, all four alloy wheels were corroded. The salesman apologised for presenting the car in this condition and it was agreed that the faulty the would be changed and a plan to remedy the wheels would be forthcoming. Two hours of boredom later, the car reapeared. A new (cheap) tyre had been fitted not matching the Michelin on the opposite axle.... As for the corroded wheels (car is not yet 3 years oid) we agreed a reduction in the due deposit to allow me to have them refurbished at my inconvenience. Thereafter I was handed the keys and told the car was in the car park. No instruction on the car, I was literally just shown the door. Would I recommend to a friend, definitely not. Do I feel I have been shafted, yes I do. My advice, stay away from this conveyor belt of hard nosed money centric arrogant dealers.

“Poor customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Rooney190 on 29/01/2016

The car itself I cannot fault However, the administration is plain terrible First up, told car was in £30.00 road tax band, it wasnt, it was band above Applied for finance, sent them my driving licence as proof of ID, said up front I was reluctant to do that, waiting 7 days to get it back, despite being told it would be sent back same day Collected car, wasnt given the MOT certificate, waited 2 weeks for that to be sent, despite being told it would be sent the same day and scanned to me, neither happened, I chased it up twice and was told two different dates it was sent to me They sat on the registration document for 28 days before even sending to the DVLA, the same applied to the vehicle I traded with them To top it all off when I received the new keepers log book I note the previous owner was a car rental company, no mention was made to me of this at all prior to purchase All in all, the car is good, the admin and pledges made all amounted to nothing

Unfortunately if you cancel u will have to pay 600 pound I'm tempted to stop paying it and default because my agreement said 29.9% but when the lender sent me the agreement it's 29.9% every year!!!!!! I've also spoken to the previous owner of the car and.she confirmed a van went into the back of her whilst stationery so it also has unrecorded damage.dont believe the 172 point check it's all lies this is proof with your car that it hasn't been checked before they tried to give you it. Go to the financial ombudsman and report them there is also a Facebook page for hippo motor.complaints raising awareness
