I performed a price comparison on GoCompare. Budget, and their subsidiary DialDirect, came out top, £164, fully comp for 1 year. For the car I was insuring, this was perfect. I clicked the link to go to Budgets web site where the price was confirmed, £164.58. I went through and deselected all the things I did not want, breakdown, courtesy car etc.. We have all that. The final screen asks you to pay. The price still showed £164.58. But oddly it asks what is the purchase date. Purchase date of what? It was not clear. The car, the policy? Surely, I am buying the insurance TODAY if I am at the paying part? I selected 2/19 (Feb 2019). There was no day option. Then I selected my preferred payment method (debit card) and paid. Just as I clicked the confirmation/submit button to my horror the price was not over £370!, over double what I thought I was paying. What caused this?? I tried to follow my steps from GoCompare again, but the quote was not valid any more. But the DialDirect quote was still there, so I went through the whole process again, and exactly the same thing happened. Once you choose a purchase date, the price more than doubles. This time though I didn’t buy the policy for obvious reasons. When I contacted Budget to complain and ask what went wrong, they stated that 1. They had no record of the quoted price. Well.. I have a screen shot, so I do. and 2. Once I realised the £164 policy did not exist I asked for the new policy to be cancelled and the payment to be immediately refunded to my debit card. They said the payment was authorised, they could not cancel the payment. My bank confirmed they can cancel the payment with the payment ref number. Budget states that a refund takes 7-10 days. Perhaps I should ask for some interest? This is totally unacceptable and completely unprofessional, especially for a company who make a lot of noise about being regulated by the FCA while you queue for 15 mins listening to a stupid computer read you notices. You might be able to tell that I am NOT HAPPY, in fact, I'm pretty angry about the whole experience. Do not use these guys. Do not believe their prices. Check, check and double check!
