I am wondering when I will receive refund of £250 taken from my credit card? Today is 15th working day since I've returned the car at Heathrow branch and since the amount was apparently refunded. I’ve called customer service 3 times, have emailed them but no luck! And I was told that the money from credit card will only be pre authorised not debited, however the money was taken. Now I am just wondering when I will receive it back as I will have to pay interest as well. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Thanks for answering this question.

Hi Kurir, I had a similar but not identical experience with Europcar. I booked the car through a company called 121 Car Hire (never again!). I was charged by them for the hire when I made the booking and I was charged again when I returned the car. Collecting and returning the car from/to Europcar was such a nightmware and so chaotic we almost missed our flight home so I didn't realise they'd charged me again until I got home. I spent months trying to contact both 121 Car Hire and Europcar but with no success. In the end I contacted my credit card company and that was also a nightmare - at one point I was told that this is quite a frequent occurrence with overseas car rental companies! Finally, I wrote a letter to the Chairman of the credit card company and he arranged for the over-charged amount to be refunded. I suggest you get on to your credit card company straight away. Good luck!

Hi the problem was with europcar Cyprus and 3 dud cars, to resolve the issue I finally contacted their head office , as a result I received a partial refund . If they took the £250. Maybe there was some damage already on the car that you did not spot or if they said they refunded money did you check that the account or card details the money went into was yours it could have gone into someone else's account . I hope this helps

I hired a car in Slovenia, they took a thousand euros deposit from my debit card, but 9 days later they still have not returned the deposit. The car was returned in good condition and full tank. Where is my money?

I had a similar issue but if memory serves right I think they have 15 working days to return it. Mind it's working days so doesn't include the weekends which means it's really 3 weeks.

Where is your money? It is with Europcar. Unfortunately they are one of the worst car hire companies. If you read small print, they have many unusual clauses (for example high additional charges for topping up returned car petrol tank in addition to just charging for petrol, etc, etc). One of the tricks is to keep your deposit money, or any due refunds for a long time before returning it. Do not worry, you will eventually get your money back. I used many car hire companies before, and this is the one to avoid at all cost!

I had a really bad experience with them a couple of years ago when I hired a car in Portugal. I paid the rental charge when I booked the car through 121 car hire in the UK and Europcar charged the basic rental to my card again when I returned it. I made numerous attempts to contact both 121 Car Hire and Europcar by telephone, email and post and that got me nowhere. I'd paid by credit card so reported them to my credit card company and eventually, after writing to the Chairman, the credit card company refunded my money. I do wish you luck with this. I shall never use 121 car hire or Europcar again.

Yes it's true the worst of the lot however Avis came a close 2nd recently, we paid the additional insurance and they took a bond as well if I had of known I would have given them a credit card we never used the also charged us in aud instead of Euros so it was an expensive hire, I thought they are not allowed to have access to debit cards, our deposit was refunded in 3 business days I guess this is how they make a lot of extra money
