Never really let me down apart from the poor door design. The handle when pulled moves the metal bar inside the washer to release the door. the link is a flimsy piece of plastic inside the door, which mine has broken twice To replace it if the door is closed, you have to cut around the door panel by the handle and jam a screwdriver in the correct place to open the door. The screws are inside part the door to take it apart. Cost about £45 for another piece of flimzy plastic and a new door skin. ive sold mine and replaced it with an LG washer dryer, its fantastic. I have 3 more items by hotpoint. As soon as they give me any grief, im binning them. Hotpoint a trusted product? I dont think so!

This machine features one of the worst pieces of design ever. The filter is buried in the back of the machine, behind a panel. Its very difficult and awkward to access - completely ridiculous at the best of time and impossible if you live in a small space!
The machine will cost you extra time, money and grief to clear the filter- whether you do it yourself or plump for an expensive callout. I bought this machine and built a cabinet around it - now we have to dismantle the cabinet just to clean the filter. What a POS.
Save yourself time and money - don't buy a hotpoint (or an indesit - they're both to blame). Buy a machine with a simple-to-access front filter, like any sane person would design.

I have hotpoint insurance for £7 a month which pays for an engineer to come out 3-4 times a year and thats with me emptying the filter which gets clogged very easily. Luckily i have a VAX which sucks up all the water which the WD420 spews out. This machine does do alot of washing, but thats no excuse for the poorly designed seal, the drum's dividers falling off, the awful design of the fluff filter, the dispensing of water from all sorts of places and the noise of the high speed spin. Splash out and get a miele!

My washer/dryer is 2 years old. First call out was when I had had it for just 9 months and now am on my 12th call out. The washing section is fine but the drying is just down right ridiculous. For a start the stupid machine has an unaccessible filter, it is located at the back of the machine and have to call out an engineer everytime it gets fluffed up. It leaks from the door, drying keeps coming out of the machine absolutely sopping wet, literally wringing wet. Each time the engineer comes out they just defluff the filter, go away again and at the moment within a few days it happens all over again. Apparently because my policy is for repair only they just keep sending them out over and over again and wont replace it. I have a family of 5 and am totally and utterly pissed off with the machine and with Hotpoint who just dont seem interest.

I cant believe how shocking a new product can be. My old washer dryer was secondhand when i got it and worked fine for about 5 years until it eventually died.
The new Hotpoint WD420 has lasted about a year and a half but had problems in that time. It has tripped my electrics on several occasions and ive had water all over the floor more times than i care to remember. I definately wont be buying another hotpoint or indesit.

My Hotpoint (Indesit made) WD420 Polar takes hours for anything to dry, it leaks all over the floor, it wont spin without water pouring out from everywhere! I will NEVER buy another hotpoint product!

Having had 4 breakdowns in 12 months for the same problem, when it happened 2 weeks after warranty expired, expected sympathy from Hotpoint. not a bit of it! wanted paying to repair same fault. after much wailing and gnashing of teeth they decided the unit was a write off and replaced. worked for 13 months then failed. Hotpoint now dug their heels in and want me to pay them to repair. It is going in the bin. DO NOT TOUCH HOTPOINT WITH A RENTED BARGE-POLE.

I bought this WD420 new for £350 and 18 months later it is going in the bin! After 3 months the electronics broke down and it refused to start a new program. It was under warranty so an engineer plugged in a laptop and reset it. Now after 18 months the electronics have broken again and its out of warranty. As its electronics and these parts are very expensive only Hotpoint can fix it economically under their "5 year parts warranty". However they will charge you a £100 call out fee or £160 to repair with a 1 year warranty. I think this is a very unreliable model. Also another electronic fault could develop at any time. So who knows how long it would last after that year! I have decided to bin it and get a Bosch washing machine instead as the dryer function was useless anyway!

I found that my Hotpoint WD420 was good only for 2-3 years service, I reckon it definitely needs to be insured at time of purchase.

A great washer dryer for the price but probably best to make sure you get an extended warranty, as I've heard that washer dryers are more likely to go wrong than separate washer and dryers.

Have tried to get Hotpoint to do a free call out (for various reasons) but the MD of Indesit ( and herein lies the problem as it is Indesit NOT Hotpoint) didn't want to know. We have a Hotpoint Fridge freezer bought at the same time and it has been repaired 3 times now and is still not right. Do not buy Hotpoint unless you are prepared to fork out for labour and spend your time waiting for an engineer

This machine was advertised in Hotpoint's brochure as having a "super silent" induction motor. However, as this is the bottom of the range it has a normal "brush" motor and only the models above have th the induction type. However, i must give Hotpoint credit for offering a swap to a higher spec. Machine for no extra charge. As we had become used to using this model we declined the offer.

The Hotpoint WD420 washer dryer is a good value, basic machine. It lacks the build quality of German rivals like the Miele and AEG, but it is about £200 cheaper, so you pays your money etc. Having bought from John Lewis, I've no experience of Hotpoint's after sales care, but previously when I had built-in Ariston appliances (from the same company) it was OK. The best thing about this machine is it's very quiet, which is very important in a small, rather badly soundproofed flat like mine!

This is the worst washer/dryer we have ever bought. When the machine was delivered it was faulty. Hotpoint's Customer Service were reluctant to replace it, and they sent an engineer out to fix it. He said that they have never had a problem with this machine. After some heated persistence we managed to get them to replace it. The second machine arrived and it wasn't faulty. Unfortunately, as we were to find out, this machine would not wash our clothes. In fact, it left some parts of the garments bone dry on a wash cycle. It couldn't wash 2 small jerseys together without shaking uncontrollably, and then it stopped mid cycle. Finally, last week it flooded the kitchen, and we decided enough was enough. Forget the repair man, this machine is so terrible that we agreed it wasn't worth fixing. Our new Zanussi arrived yesterday, and after running a few cycles, we had, for the first time in 2 years, clean clothes. Our old Hotpoint WD420 is now sitting out on the path ready for the refuse collection, and it really is where it belongs, in the trash. Unfortunately, these bad machines ruin the environment. Hotpoint should sort it out.

This is a serious design fault and the Hotpoint (Indesit made) WD420 Polar is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.
DO NOT BUY a Hotpoint washer dryer, as it will not work beyond a year.
Yes, you'll get the engineer out for free within the 1st 12 months, but then it will happen at least twice a year under normal useage (3-5 wash cycles per week).
Customer service and service engineers WILL NOT COMMENT on the problem
Thanks HOTPOINT

The root of this problem is the design of the heater box on the Hotpoint WD420. It doesn't work for more than 3 months when being used as a washer drier. Hotpoint take no responsibility for their appliances beyond the warranty date, and it is very difficult to get a satisfactory response from their customer service manager. Unless you have an 'extended warranty' I would say that you could be stuck with a faulty appliance or have a quarterly visit from a service engineer.
<br/>As a result of their lack of action I will NEVER purchase any HOTPOINT appliances again, for either home or my workplace (I have previously purchased 10 in the last 5 years). It is a shame that a quality brand UK manufacturer produces poor quality machines and then they don't honour their obligation to their customers.

I have the Hotpoint WD420 washer dryer, and I have been having a lot of problems with the dryer (not sure exactly what). My warranty expires on 26th October 2006, and it is now the 11th October 2006 and I am waiting for my third call out to sort out the dryer, which has packed up yet again. We have just called again to ask if we can have a new one and have been told they will get the engineer to assess if it needs replacing, and if not, if it breaks down again we will automatically get a new one (even if outside the warranty), so there may be hope yet!
