“Vacuum Suited for Trouble-Shooters”

★★☆☆☆

written by ModsterMan on 03/02/2016

I found that I spend a LOT of time cleaning this vacuum and a LOT of time wondering WHY there is no suction and WHY the bottom of the vacuum is shooting junk out instead of sucking it in. I clean it after every use now, and I WASH the three key plastic pieces with water. I beat the dust out of the filter after every TWO uses, unlike my Dyson which I wash ONCE every THREE MONTHS, otherwise all suction will be lost. Even now I am searching the Internet looking for tips on how to open the head of the vacuum to check for blockages without destroying the vacuum. Like others, it sure beats using my fingers, but it would be better if I had a normal vacuum!

“I see nothing wrong with it”

★★★★★

written by Runmaster on 12/04/2015

I have had my Vax power 8 for just over six months and have noticed no issues that would make me want to avoid buying it again or suggesting it to anyone. Yes, it's as heavy as sin but nowhere near as heavy as a professional vacuum that you would buy for for ten times the cost and yes, you do need to clean it out after every use but if you can't find your way to do that then you should hire a maid or something and be lazy in your own time and space. I have read that lots of people have complained about a loss of suction and I believe they are either not cleaning out the hepa disc filter after every use or using shake and vac carpet powder which clogs the filter very quickly. If you follow the instructions, it works just fine and like the first reviewer I noticed huge amounts of dirt being lifted from the carpets on the first few weeks. It was only when the carpets were much cleaner that the vacuum didn't get as much but you wouldn't expect it to from a clean carpet. Complaints, I have a few. First of all, it is made of plastic and some of that plastic is a tad frail in places. Also, the clip that holds the attachment pipe/ tube thing on the side didn't hold it very tightly but then I read that all you need do is put a hot blow dryer on it for awhile and pinch the two ends together a small fraction so that worked out fine. I would suggest and recommend this vacuum to anyone but like all vacuums, get spare filters and belts when you can as these will always go in time on any vacuum with a power head.

“I love it”

★★★★☆

written by on 18/02/2015

In spite of previous negative reviews, many of the issues have been sorted during continued production and as I have a 4th generation Vax Power 8 I have noticed none of the previous complaints. Whilst it is true that the vacuum can lose suction it is due to a lack of proper cleaning and inncorrect instalment of the HEPA filter. Yes, you do need to clean it out after each use but come on, that's just good practise and one that will not kill you to do. With good care and treatment, your vacuum will be a joy to use and I must say that even though I clean my carpets weekly, when I switched from my old Hoover turbo 2 to the Vax Power 8, I managed to collect an extra 3 kilograms of dirt from my carpets within two days. If you are deciding on a good vacuum at a good price you could do worse than the Vax Power 8 and if you pick it up from Bunnings hardware then you can get it for under $180 which is a bargain.

“The worst vacuum cleaner I have ever had”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Suzytoots1 on 10/02/2015

I have had 2 of these vacuum cleaners designed for pet owners. The first one had a fabric type filter. This was awful to empty and despite trying to keep it clean inside it it blew out stuffy dog smells. The hose split so I ordered a new one together with a brush attachment. Twice I was sent hoses which although fitted, didn't fit the attachments. Was told it would be looked into. Then received a delivery of a new cleaner. Said to the driver I didn't order this, he replied I've delivered a few of these who say the same. Can only think they stopped making my one. Threw it out and used the new one. Even worse than the first one. Continually blocks and to unblock it is the worst thing ever. Be ready to get filthy with having to dig everywhere to clear the blockage. You will get covered in dust. Even just emptying it isn't good. It has now totally blocked within the pipes. Had to unscrew the side pipe and pull out the hairs by hand. This didn't cure it. Took the long hose off, that was clear. Turned it upside down to unscrew 5 screws to take the plate off. Dust and grit now everywhere. Can't see why it's not picking up. Cleaned the filter. Can't get the screws back in as they are recessed deep into the plastic. Must have been a machine that assembled this. The hose attached is stretched beyond belief and won't fit snugly onto the holder anymore , it drags along the floor. I'm taking this 4 month old vacuum cleaner to the dump, won't even bother to put it back together. It's absolutely the most annoying, useless and worst vacuum cleaner ive ever had.

I agree wtih everything said here, the vacuum suction is created via the HEPA filter through a central tube into the same chamber within the head of the cleaner as the suction hose is connected to .Hence as the hairs etc enter the chamber, the suction cone pulls eveeything to itsrlf causing a road block in the head and nothing drops into the main collection body\Meanwhile all the finer particles and dust get sucked into the HEPA filter and block that.
As an engineering manager I can see why it could never work properly.mine is only 6 months old but I have already replaced it with a new HOOVER,which does work properly

bought this as i have two dogs, useless from day one, picks up but gets blocked at the top so doesn't go into the cylinder, then leaves a trail of grit at the bottom VAX should realy recall these shoddy machines and give people their money back or at least replace it with a decent machine that actually does what it states it does....will be contacting trade and standard about these rubbish machines

“Same as everyone else!!!!”

written by antivax on 27/03/2014

Clean the filters, plug it in and it works fine for five minutes; you then need to empty the dust collector because it is once again blocked at the top once again _ add to that it's noisy and extremely heavy and one can only conclude that it's a useless piece of junk totally unfit for it's purpose,

Totally agree. Great suction if filters are completely clean. Filters then need to be cleaned after each use if you want to recreate cleaning power.

“Vax Power 8”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Ziegler357 on 27/02/2014

If you are thinking of purchasing this cleaner please think again. It may be a tempting buy if you are on a budget, but you would be wiser to save for the better option of a Dyson, to which I usually use but am in the process of re-furbing it. I have thick pile carpets and while there is a setting for this on the cleaner, it does not pick up unless lowered to the short pile setting which doesnt make sence, although it does take care of the bingo wings, after pushing the machine round. The hose and entry into the bagless chamber are always clogging, this after only 4 uses, it is a pain having to make sure it is not blocked before each use. On the hard floor setting I find a sweeping brush is the better and quicker option.I certainly wouldnt recommend this cleaner and cannot wait until my Dyson is up and running once again.

“Worst purchase ever”

written by on 21/02/2014

Cleans up pet hair?! Only if your pet is a fish moving along wooden floors. And to find this out I had to buy it, and use it. So I can't return to Argos!! ARGHH. After 2 uses bought a dyson DC39. Amen. So angry about the wasted money though. Gave it away...

“Worst vacuum I have ever had. It didn't pick up from...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/02/2014

Worst vacuum I have ever had. It didn't pick up from day one. Took it back to the shop who recommended I contact Vax. Was told to take it all apart put paper at nozzle to see if suction present. Then told to put in a new filter, this was a one day old vacuum. Doesn't put dust into cylinder just clogs in top pipe. Attachments fall off in use and tips over easily. I will never buy another Vax product. Customer care not helpful at all.

“Great suction...for all of about 5 minutes!”

★★☆☆☆

written by Pandsala on 31/12/2013

I came across this site whilst trying to find out what was wrong with my vacuum cleaner, and it appears from what people are writing this is just the way it is. On the first couple of uses it was awesome, amazing suction, then it seemed to not do anything at all - in fact seemed to spit out from the bottom. So I cleaned out the top of the cylinder and washed out the filter, leaving it a day to dry, and all seemed well again. But it appears you have to do this after every time you use it which is a massive pain, and I can't seem to get around my entire flat in one go (a studio apartment!) before it gives up the ghost again. I bought this one particularly for the attachments to pick up cat hair from the couch, etc, but the hoses are the first thing to loose suction. In short, it's great for about the first 5 or 10 minutes, then just terrible. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

“shame!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mikeiom on 05/11/2013

Bought this vacuum based on spec but only temporarily delivers. Too much time spent cleaning it as it clogs easily also not easy to pick up and carry up and down stairs. Second very poor vax product but didn't want a Dyson either as also not best. Will keep looking for a decent pet vacuum.

“Too high maintenance”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gizzycat on 16/10/2013

You spend so much time washing filters and unclogging pipes with this cleaner. The turbo tool only works slightly for ten minutes when filter is cleaned, it then stops working. Your spend more time cleaning the vacuum than cleaning your carpets.

“Only one word for it Rubbish”

written by Plugs65 on 14/06/2013

As with everyone else he filter clogs and leaves a trail of mess worse than when started! I don't understand how vax still have it on the market, and can justify taking our money! I have given it a one star rating but it should really be -1!

“bad bad design”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/06/2013

I think I have solved why my Vax power 8 pet has been useless since almost the first week of use, After revisiting their web site before chucking the thing away I found something I had not spotted before That there is meant to be a seal on the outer rim of the dust emptying flap of the dust cylinder. OH? I can not recall one being there and must assume that it went in the bin with the first lot of dust being emptied. Now to me to have a seal which is on a flap where it opens and is shaken out over a bin and NOT have it very firmly affixed is really bad design.Especially since no seal is available, it has to be the whole dust cylinder for £19.99 Now that is plain shoddy. I have tested it with a seal of blue tac and is now working something like it did originally.

“AVOID AT ALL COSTS! ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Fragglerox on 28/05/2013

This has got to be the WORST MOST USELESS PIECE OF JUNK I have ever had the misfortune of buying. I was taken in by the spec of such a powerful motor, size of canister and length of lead. Dirt and pet hair gets stuck at the entrance to the cylinder and blocks it. Dirt comes out the bottom of the cylinder and blocks the filter within a couple of minutes use. It blows out dust everywhere. The hose has no suction at all and won't even suck up a cobweb, (i'm sure i could here the spiders laughing)', this is not helped by the bizarre slots in the tube! Grit is just too much to cope with and collects in the bottom where the beater brush is, leaving a trail of dirt behind it. You need a good pair of ear defenders to use it. My dog runs upstairs and hides, trembling under the bed as soon as I get the Power 8 out! Worse than useless on hard surfaces, it just moves the dirt around the floor. This is supposed to be good for pet hair but I don't have a bald, deaf cockroach! Vax, how on earth have you got away with this abomination? I called the Vax helpline today, they said they know of no issues with this product and they are thoroughly tested before leaving the factory. She just took me through standard tests to see if there was a blockage or snapped belt. I wish I had read these reviews first. Tomorrow, this piece of junk goes back to Argos - good riddance. I shall go back to using my old, 1300 watt, bagged, smelly, 1 wheeled cylinder cleaner that I keep for doing the car, and with pleasure.

“Will never buy vax again ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Highlandponio on 07/05/2013

I've had problems with this vacuum from the start. The suction was great for normal hoovering but all the dirt collected at the top of the fancy spiral thingys and never made it into the clyinder. And using the nozzle end was pointless, no suction at all. I rang vax about the problem and the lady knew what was wrong straight away I was missing a rubber seal on the base of the cylinder; she sent a new cylinder out to me for free. Since putting this new cylinder on suction has improved dramatically, I no longer have to use the old Hoover for nozzle head work (normal hoovering with the old one was pointless that's why we got a new one) however the pet attachment thingy still doesn't work and alought quite a lot of dirt does go into the clyinder alot still get trapped in the sporally thing at te top. Oh and I changed the nozzle end for the one off my old Hoover as the one on this machine has little slits in the side reducing the suction at the end - very strange design. Like others I still have to wash the filter after every other use, although when I did some DIY and was hoovering up sawdust and plaster I just took the filter out it seemed to work just as well! It does have habit of falling over all the time. It is noisy. The length of the cord and nozzle end pipe are ok. The on/off switch does my head in though as its temperamental as to if it is going to work or just rev up even though I press it firmly. I find it rather cumbersome to carry up and down stairs. Overall the most annoying thing is the spirally part to the top on the cylinder it cloggs up all the time, I'm forever putting rubber gloves on and emptying it, which is the most fiddly design ever.

“Dangerous unsafe vacuum - bad design ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Lmelvin23 on 05/05/2013

Bought this vacuum today to replace my old dyson totally regret buying now! Started hoovering like normal and worked fine its only when you pull out the hose that you realise the faulty design!! The hose is far too small and barely has any pull in it...I was literally crouched beside it hoovering the corner when the thing came flying towards me and poked my eye! In other words you cannot use the hose function without it collapsing on you! It's very unstable - I warn anyone using it to be very careful. Unsatisfied & disappointed Vax customer

“WORST HOOVER EVER!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Nelles11 on 28/04/2013

Leaves more dirt and pet hair behind than what it picks up. The filter clogs within 2 minutes of use so spend more time cleaning out the vacuum than actually trying to get it to pick up whats on the floor. I`ve bought vacuums that were half the price, that have done a better job.

Angel8000's Response to Nelles11's Review

Written on: 02/05/2013

I totally agree this hoover is useless, the dirt goes straight to the top of the cylinder affecting suction, its even worse if you try to use the hose the suction just isn't there- its far too short to reach up the stairs, the hoover 'topples' over on you when your using the hose. I've had mine 6 weeks and regretted buying this useless piece of junk within 10 minutes of first using it and don't even get me started on the animal attachment think vax were having a laugh when they invented that!!
