“Not the Idris I remember”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 18/06/2013

It seems like they must've changed the formula in recent years because growing up I remember Idris carrying a bit kick. In comparison it seems fairly mild now. The colour also seems to have changed as well. I noticed the label now also lists artificial sweeteners among the ingredients, an odd decision considering it isn't a diet drink. This change also seems to make it almost overwhelming sweet in combination with the sugar. Not sure I could suggest this new Idris to a friend.

In a nutshell Idris ginger beer is a shadow of it's former...
Thank God for the likes of Fever Tree.
Shame on Idris.

I remembered Idris Ginger Beer from when I was a youngster. It seems to have all but disappeared now. I did however find a few cans in a corner shop and so bought all of them. The taste has chamged which could be the artificial sweetners. I did prefer it in its distnctive brown stumpy glass bottle. I love it with a touch of lime as a very refreshing long drink with loads of ice. iI am now looking for more and the supermarkets do not seem to stock it in the UK.

Idris Ginger Beer is not sugar-free but also has artificial sweeteners in it? Weak ginger flavor about as strong as Canada Dry. GOYA is at least twice(more like three times) as strong. I got sucked in by the "Try me if you dare" slogan. Edible but not something I would drink again even if free.

The most disappointing thing is you see the firetruck red can and the warning and you expect to have the hottest Ginger Beer you've ever had. This is about as strong as a mild Reed's brand but not as good.

Idris Ginger Beer has no real ginger taste. The only real good ginger beer is old Jamaica Ginger Beer.

Idris Ginger Beer is far superior to any of the usual supermarket brands which have unfortunately replaced it. Perhaps Lord Lucan has a secret stash! It is the best tasting ginger beer ever. I remember drinking tons of the stuff as a kid. That fiery tingle hasn't been replicated by any of the widely available 'own brands' that I've tasted since.

I am a big ginger beer fan and was looking forward to trying Idris. It was very disappointing. I have never come across the use of artificial sweeteners in a non-diet soda like this before. The drink is sweetened with sugar, Asulfame K and Aspartame. This is not labeled as a diet beverage and I can only guess that it is being done to reduce costs. The aftertaste from the artificial sweeteners really ruins what would otherwise be a good (though not very spicy) ginger beer.

I need to check a potential issue - the review I posted was about Idris Fiery Ginger Beer - this was the only Idris ginger beer I found - but I can't say for sure that this is the only ginger beer Idris makes. Does anyone know if there is a "regular" Idris ginger beer too, or did they just rename the product?

I love ginger beer since I grew up in New Zealand, but it is hard to find a good supply in USA. I found a can of Idris Ginger Beer and loved it. I will be looking for more.

Idris Ginger Beer is the best ginger beer I ever tasted. It is by far the best brand. I get a bottle whenever I'm down at the pub. It tastes so delicious and fiery. It gives your throat a warm and tingly feeling for a while after being drunk. My favourite!

as a ginger beer lover i was ecstatic to find a really, really 'fiery' ginger beer- lured in by the 'try me if you dare!' slogan.
how wrong could i be? the drink was terrible; i only managed about quarter of the can before i was forced to pour the rest down the kitchen sink, i am fine with most ginger beers, sweetened or not, but this was weak, smelt, and tasted of, chemicals.
i don't know if they have changed the recipe since long ago or something, but the drinks company have really messed up on this one.
