Nickwilko's review of HTC Wildfire

“Blood pressure too low? A HTC Wildfire will soon sort...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Nickwilko on 14/09/2011

Whilst it is no doubt a good thing to have fairly reliable access to the internet whilst on the go, I feel that after owning a HTC Wildfire for over 12 months, the price I've have had to pay for this access (because I'm stuck in a contract) is increased blood pressure and an overall lowered tolerance threshold!

To return to the mild-mannered individual I believe I was before, I'm strongly considering digging out and returning my good old Nokia 6230i.

The main reasons for my frustrations are essentially down to the fact that the phone's processor is 528MHz and the RAM is also a mere 384MB.......

- TEXTING (which was NEVER an issue with a regular old Nokia) is now a slow and cumbersome exercise - sometimes taking up to 5 minutes to write a simple text (including one minute to open up and get to a text).

The processor cannot and will never keep up with your typing no matter your speed your going at meaning the phone will still be typing and catching up a good few seconds after you've finished a sentence.

Often if you hit the space-bar - and it gives the sound of you hitting the space-bar - it may not necessarily give you the space between words that you think you've got, in turn giving a sentence of absolute gobbledegook.

Also something that really hacks me off is that when you start off a new sentence - because the processor is so bad - the first few letters of a word or even the whole word will be in caps - sometimes giving the sentence an unintended tone of voice.

And finally, when you try and access any given text conversation in the list, probably 8 times out of ten you will bizarrely access a much older conversation with someone else instead - where you may (and has happened) end up sending a text (and sometimes naughty text) to the wrong person...........like your Mum!

- CAMERAPHONE is awful for stills photography, just awful. Well as long as you don't expect your pictures to be in focus or anywhere near in focus, it's fine.
Just don't take it on holiday expecting to get any decent holiday snaps.

- VIDEO capture is strangely ok considering the stills capture is dreadful. Quite useable.

- GOOGLE MAPS is again a frustrating and incredibly slow experience - usable - but a pain.

- GAMES. well don't expect to be able to use them on this phone. Well to be fair I've only tried using Angry Birds, but it's far from a flowing experience constantly stopping and starting. I played it once and gave up.

- INTERFACE however on the HTC is an extremely user friendly one - the biggest selling point.
However the phone always stalls for a few seconds when you try to or inadvertently change to upright from horizontal or vice-versa screen viewing.

- DIALLING. Do be very careful you don't end up calling someone you're not intending to call (the problem with all touch-screen phones) as on this phone no matter how many time you panic and press End Call it will still be calling a good few seconds after pressing call.
The call history list is a problem here as one touch will call! so be extremely careful when scrolling......especially when you've just come home from the pub a little worse for wear at 12am - you may have a lot of explaining to do (Yup, got the t-shirt on that one!).

- DURABILITY. Yes, for the first time since entering the world of mobile phone ownership, this is the only one I've ended up throwing across the room against a wall (out of pure frustration when it lost a long text I was writing). Fortunately with the help of a rubber surround, it survived perfectly intact.....but unfortunately it still ended up functioning exactly the same as before!

All in all unless they get the processor issues and minor bugs sorted, I would most definitely spend the extra on a Desire or a Blackberry or even an iPhone if you're feeling flush.

Time for a lie-down in a darkened room me-thinks!
