“First impressions of the Navman Tourer (and possibly...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/10/2011

I have had a Navman iCN510 for years, which was great. I had all the quibbles with cables and chargers of the other reviewers with the Tourer. After an initial 8 hour charge, I duely added all my favourites from my earlier satnav and set up a couple of multi-stop trips. The latter were not as easy as in the earlier software. I continually had to use 'find' for each waypoint, rather than just moving the cursor and clicking on the next stop point. At this point I also found that the on/off/reset button didn't really understand what it was supposed to do. It was on when the button said off and off when it said on. I could see that the set date was in August 2011 whereas I was in the end of October, but could see no way to fix the time. Then it occurred to me that it would be automatic when it picks up a satellite, it was but the original date that turned out to be significant. Anyway, got it done finally. Then after installing the Navdesk software and connecting the satnav, I struggled to get the software to pick up the device. It kept telling me that it was unable to connect to the server and to disconnect my device and try again. Then that there was a fult on the USB device. Eventually, my trips appeared but I could not get the free map update promised. I wondered whether it was a firewall issue so tried the whole thing on an XP machine (first was Vista), same problem. Also on Windows 7. Went back to the first machine and could no longer get the trips to display. Then I discovered that they were all missing from the satnav. Somehow they had deleted themselves. I also got notifications that my free trials were no longer valid and I would have to resubscribe, odd after only 17 hours. Took the thing back to Halfords. They rang Navman. Seems some units are having these issues and said that my satnav had been registered in August 2011. Mmmm. I had noticed some faint scratches on the front plastic casing. So, it seems that not only are there problems with some devices, but Navman is happy to rebox and sell units that have been sold and presumably returned before. I am not impressed. For my money, the 510 had better functionality and simpler software. I got my money back.

If you got it from Halfords, then it is more than likely that someone bought it went on a trip and returned it after they got back. Halfords have a 28 days no quibble return policy allowing for plenty of ways to game the system. I'm sure someone have downloaded software from the web rather than used the cd. Such is life.
