“Very enjoyable experience, excellent horses and caring...”

★★★★★

written by Junez161 on 21/05/2016

We were fortunate to be so well looked after on our ride. One staff member who took care of me as a nervous rider was brilliant and the horse chosen by her for me was a great match. Each time I appeared to be worried she immediately reassured me and so made the whole experience enjoyable. The horses were well cared for, the saddles and bridles etc. in good condition and the staff ensured we were safe. A good day out.

“You can please some of the people some of the time !”

★★★★★

written by on 09/07/2015

Its not a perfect world, but the atmosphere the 99% of the time at the yard is a warm and welcoming one,(anyone that goes to any yard will know it that its not all plain sailing, with that many hormonal girls in one place!!) but the love for the horses is always paramount, and will always shine through. I know people out there have their own opinions on the matter, and most of them have their own reason why they continue to make a mockery of the yard and its owners. Life in general has its ups and downs, but Penhalwyn Trekking Centre , will always continue to keep a smile on my face.. Come and experience it for yourself, and keep an open mind on some of the bitter reviews, as there are more positives than negatives being written, Nowhere is perfect, and Im sure the people who write the bitter comments, their lives aren't perfect either, thats why they feel the need to persist in and wallow in the own imperfections. I love it, and if you come and ride there you may too.... you may not... but it would be a boring world if we all loved the same thing... Think Marmite.... :)<3 :)

“Run down, shoddy and should be shut down. ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jamesuu126 on 16/06/2015

Avoid!! PTC is poorly run and the children seem to interfere and run amuck. Organised chaos. The horses are over worked, often are missing shoes. The owner has lost his licence and cannot operate as a trekking centre. Horses are neglected and some have had to be destroyed because of the owners lack of care.

I know if you were to check with the licensing authorities , that PTC as you put it, Penhalwyn Trekking Centre, has there license, and as to having to have horses destroyed, unfortunately some horses do have to be euthanised as per Vet instruction (none of them are immortal) after many attempts by the vets to assist in recovery. If you are talking about the recent horse who was put down, no more could be done for him, and at the ripe old age of 26, was the nicest thing anybody could possibly do for the poor animal. Calling it destroyed is a very uncaring and uncompassionate way of saying it, ending with compassion the life of a very cherished and loved horse It seems you have some bitterness towards the business, sour grapes maybe ? !! Anybody who needs to know contact Cornwall County Council, Where you will get the truth ... not bitter one sided comments like this... all horses lose shoes , oh If only it was a perfect world ... eh!!

“AMAZING PLACE TO BE, WITH AMZING PEOPLE AND HORSES”

★★★★☆

written by Jess-topaz on 07/10/2014

Penhalwyn horses are very well cared for,and they are all very kind. Visitors are always welcomed as they come to our yard, the lessons are amazing. The horses are obviously gonna be covered in mud all of the yards horses are, what do u except us to do, well people who ride or look after horses will know that when it has been raining and been winter it's going to be muddy, u go anywhere after it's been raining and the grass will be muddy, and of corse horses do roll. I ride up there Saturdays and stay there from 9:00 till about 4:30 and it's all very nice and relaxed, it's the same on Sunday and weekdays, the lessons are 10:00, 11:30 and 2:00 and u can have hacks out at the same times, u can request a 2 hour birthday hack. The views are amazing both on your way down to the outside sand school and out on hacks. Topaz my favourite pony, is always getting treats from me, and all of the other horses do because they are well behaved and well loved, by anyone who sees them or rides them.

Licence is being reapplied for, was down to the buildings needing updating , which have stood the test of time for over 35 years!!! NOT because of the horses , they were all in fine form..... ask the licencers...watch this space, please, Im sure if you need to know the truth , and not listen to the gossipers out there, please phone the owners for further info.

“Great stables-fantastic staff”

★★★★★

written by Nervous1981 on 28/08/2014

Went here today with my little girl. I havent ridden for many years and was very nervous to say the least. My horse came out-a giant! I almost let nerves get the better of me and didnt get on. However the lady agreed to let me mount last so I didnt have long to wait. She helped me all the way, talking and reassuring me. My little girl is a competent rider but was nervous as shes used to horses at our local stables. This was no problem, a member of staff walked with her all the way. I was walked with the entire round and was made to feel like this wasnt a problem at all. The horses are clearly looked after well and loved by all who are there. I cant thank the staff (and the horse!!) enough. I went from almost dismounting due to fear, to having an amazing time and even trotted along. Both my daughter and myself were looked after really well. Thank you all

“ find another stables”

★☆☆☆☆

written by SaniyaBuchanan228 on 09/08/2014

Not the place it was a few years ago and the way its going dont think it will be there long. The stables is on it last legs. Horses are being sold off to pay for debts. A few old ponies are still there just incase someone turns up for a ride. Parents have advised the owners of bullying but the owner doesnt know how to handle it so lots of kids hv left Livery part is a joke. You pay 18 pounds aweek to keep your horse there and use of outdoor sand school. You dont get yr own field or stable. You get hay in winter but due to owners debts doesnt put enough out for them. If you use the fields on the hill the owners let a local boating company use it for storing their boats and let them repair them there. Wood, paint and metal is left all over the place. People walk their dogs on there and people from the local camp site use it as a walk thro Staff are allowed to smoke in the tea room and office which is illegal. Everyone seems to know everyone business due to the owners big mouths. No client confidetiality whats so ever. Use another stables!!!!

For £18 per week the vast majority of people would not expect access to their own field. There is an opportunity for livery horses to have an allocated stable if required at an additional cost. There is always an element of bitchiness where lots of girls are in one place for an extended time, but the atmosphere at Penhalwyn is overwhelmingly positive. I bought my horse from Penhalwyn and now keep him there on livery. I am more than happy to pay £18 for the livery and would never move anywhere else.
Penhalwyn may not be the competition-driven yard that other livery yards seem to be, but for those of us who want a relaxed and friendly environment from which to school and hack our horses it is ideal.

“PTC”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/07/2014

Penhalwyn Trekking Centre is situated in a really lovely area, with lots of beautiful places to hack, which makes it ideal if you're looking for the odd ride. However, if you're looking to ride on a regular basis it may not be the best place to begin. This is not due to the horses however. Teaching varies depending on who takes the lesson, where the lesson takes place and how many people are in a lesson. The lessons become repetitive after a while and begin to become boring. My riding did improve at PTC but only to a certain extent. If you're looking to further your jumping abilities it's a bit of a waste of time as in lessons the jumps are barely higher than a foot. Most of the horses are lovely and look after their riders really well although there are an awful lot of them so some don't get as much care and attention as they need. The real downsides to PTC are the facilities and some of the children. The stables are in poor condition, the fields are purely mud in winter (however there is plenty of grazing on the hill), the schools could be improved and tack is very outdated. Some of the children can be very unfriendly and fall outs happen often. The staff are friendly and helpful as are the owners, who have been accused in previous reviews of causing havoc but this really isn't the case, the owners have put a lot of money and time into the yard to keep it running for the last few years. Children are asked to perform yard duties when staying a full day at the yard, which is fair enough if you're there for lessons and experience, but liveries are also asked to look after the yard's horses as well as their own on a regular basis which doesn't seem fair considering it impacts the amount of time owners spend with their horses. Sometimes the children do as much work as some of the staff, including leading in lessons and taking rides out. Children are however rewarded for their efforts with points towards a free lesson, but this takes a fair amount of time and work. As for liveries, I have seen many move to other yards recently and both horses and riders have greatly improved. It is such a shame that the yard isn't to the highest standard as it has the potential to be something really special.

“OWNERS DONT HAVE A CLUE HOW TO RUN THE BUSINESS”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 153Gray on 08/06/2014

Had a good laugh about the good reviews at penhalwyn stables which have come from 12 year old girls and from the owner. The kids are dropped off and left there for the day. It is become the most bitchest stables ever. Everyone knows everyone's business due to the owners wife who tell everyone business and who owes money. She also likes to humilate the girls on facebook!! Several of the younger staff will give you their negative comments on your riding skills The owner hardly worms his horses and when he can be bothered he uses blunt needles that are years old which he boils up!!! The equipment, tack and property are that old they should be in a museum. The poor horse are tired and knacked too. No water in stables and haynets are left empty. The horse are left standing in their own muck. Give this stables a wide berth for livery and lessons. The lesson are often given by non qualified staff. Rides are often taken out with kids that go up for the day!!

“Shambolic. ”

★★★☆☆

written by BillyJoe91 on 29/01/2014

If people spent less time with the horses and more learning how to spell then perhaps these reviews (Both positive and negative) would carry more credibility. As it stands the place sounds like it's just full of illiterate and bickering teenagers.

“Complete rubbish, didn't learn as much as they say ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Horse-lover1 on 18/01/2014

I liked the yard at first, but the more you go the more you get treated like a 2nd citizen. The horses are stood in mud all winter, some livery horses are neglected and the business owners don't do nothing about it. When horses are need of certain care they don't get the requirements they need, one day those stables are going to fall down, gates are coming off, they have to many horses that they are only on pony nuts so they don't get the nutrition they need. The money they want for the horses are a ridiculous amount, and they won't get what they want. The tack is so old it will fall apart soon, the numnahs are trashed. The lessons are boring and after a while there useless. The jumping is like a foot high if that. The sand school is rock hard and the fencing is dangerous. The staff are really bossy and demanding, and when I was there they always came running to me to do things. ALS I got blamed for everything that bad went on up there just cuz I was one of the oldest. I defiantly recommend a different yard.

“bitchy”

★★★☆☆

written by on 09/12/2013

Penhalwyn is a lovely stables with well looked after horses, i had improved greatly but the bitchyness is TERRIBLE, if you are thinking of starting as a regular and staying the day, i DO NOT recommend it. people judge your riding and just constantly put you down and gossip. the most they will do about any of it is say stop. there are some real lovely girls, but i don't trust any really. the place isn't very tidy really could be allot better, the barn is used as an indoor school and all the hay bales makes it really hard to ride properly, you catch your leg, can't see, can't hear, also its a massive health hazard, what if one falls whilst your riding?!?! The staff are friendly ( most :L) but FORCE you to do work even if you have a horse!! and if you don't they will send you home!!!!!!! they are really pushy and some are too cocky, and so are allot of the kids. lately 5 people have left and its allot calmer and quite tranquil, now they have finally gone hopefully the bitchyness will stop as most came from them. I really don't recommend this yard, i moved quite a few weeks ago to old mill and already improved!!! I recomend old mill.

written by charliess on 26/11/2013

Must be the BITCHYEST yard!, staff all talk about eachother's buisness, the owners are careless and spread rubbish, and let the stable girls all argue and fight. Only lovely thing about this place are the horses, bless them,

“Best yard in the world!”

★★★★★

written by on 28/10/2013

Penhalwyn is an amazing yard. The horses are well cared for and loved very much by everyone. The staff are always so funny, friendly and helpful. Its a great place to go for weekly lessons or just the occasional hack. The lessons are great and your do a wide range of things from flatwork to jumping. Whenever its raining you ccan always ride in the barn and do fun activities such as bareback lessons. The hacks are great, with a wide range or contry side, road and moors. There is something for you weather your a novice or an experienced rider. The childrens work is rewarded with points, which go towards free lessons and hacks. Fun events are held for the regulars such as Fancy dress (With horses!!), western rides, showjumping, gymcannas, treasure hunts, one day events, cross country, christmas and halloween parties and dressage tests. Its a great place to learn more about horses and stable managment. You can take your ABRS tests here and have fun doing it! As a livery yard it is great, with affordable prices and exellent facillities. They also offer working livery at a bargin price!!! It is an amazing yard and I would definetly reccoment it to anyone out there, weather your looking to learn to ride, go on the occacional hack or keep a pony there.

“Penhalwyn Trekking Centre and School”

★★★★★

written by rebeckyloveshorses on 10/05/2013

Penhalwyn is AMAZING! After a few years of not riding due to illness, I recently spent 7 months at another nearby riding school and decided to move as I wasn't progressing and it was a lot more expensive. I went to Penhalwyn just to ride a friends pony and fell in love with the place. Less than a week later I was having my first lesson there. All instructors are friendly and very helpful and in just a few months I have greatly improved. All the horses are beautiful and are properly cared for and the staff and owners are excellent. Lessons are reasonably priced and there are many oportunities to be had with half-term activities such as Gymkhanas and Show-Jumping and if you complete yard work, you can earn points towards a lesson. I now go there for 12 hours a week and enjoy every minute there. Would definately reccomend to any sort of rider weather your a beginner or an expert. Come to Penhalwyn, you won't regret it! Becky

“I love this place!”

★★★★★

written by on 26/04/2013

Penhawlyn is the best riding school I have ever attended, and I should know- I stayed there from 9.30-4.00 every Saturday from when I was eight years old,for about 2 and a half to 3 years. I'm attending this ridding school still, even though I have four horses of my own- that's how much I love this place. You will see reviews on this site that say the horses are badly kept, not looked after properly, but they are. They are kept in brilliant condition, and are not treated unfairly or cruelly by anyone. The riding lessons are very good and informative, and you will learn allot from these lessons if you ever come to this riding school. The horses are always friendly, kind and will love to have the attention,if you choose to give it. You ride at your own risk, but hardly anyone falls off of the horses here. You hear people complaining about falling off and everything, but you ride at your own risk, and this is the same at any other riding school. The staff are always friendly and ready to help you if you want it,and give you helpful advice and riding tips. This place is brilliant-I love it dearly, and, even when I grow up,it will always have a place in my heart!
