“'Shriving' to Buying Ready Mix Pancake Batter!”

★★★★☆

written by FlyGuy on 07/03/2014

My Shrove Tuesday got under way in typical fashion, a cup of coffee and a reserved moment contemplating spiritual growth and mulling over potential life amendments. But that tranquil scenario was interrupted when I happened to detect that my possession of the mandatory components for the habitual pre Lent meal of Pancakes was a resounding zilch! The eager anticipation for the traditional and impending banquet was somewhat stifled by the £3.62 shopping basket costs for the required batter mix elements. The probable six pancake cook-off appeared likely to result in pre-topping overheads in excess of £0.60p/pancake, when you begin to factor in utility costs and superfluous left over produce, the entire family began having misgivings over the validity of pursuing this customary feast It was an ‘aisle end’ promotional case stacker that momentarily caught my gaze, ‘Aunt Bessies Shake & Make Pancake Mix’, 150g of primed batter mix! Retailing at just £1.00!, this just add water product boasted a generous six portion content, equating to pre-topping costs of a bargain £0.167p/pancake! Admittedly cynical of a conceivably ‘processed’ dining experience, I deliberated for a moment before concluding that the one pound disbursement negated any real element of ‘risk’ to insignificant levels I found the on-pack directives easy to follow and invaluable, the ‘fill to’ line for the addition of cold water was a particular feature to heap praise upon. The ‘shake’ element was a real hoot! Having fixed the screw cap lid firmly back in place, I proceeded to shake the mix for the requisite time specification, endeavoring to blend and smooth out the batter. However I couldn’t resist passing the bottle around the family and letting the kiddies have a turn. A bona fide and unexpected mirth inducer! It’s of noteworthy significance that I was slightly disenchanted that the mix seemingly had lumpy aspects remaining despite the rigorous mixing period, that said I found the product easy to manage when dispensing into the pan and there’s no disputing the real saving qualities when speaking in terms of labour and time. Any apprehensions I held over the consistency of the mix diminished almost immediately as the ‘lumpiness’ dissipated with almost no auxiliary intervention. I wouldn’t necessarily advocate this product over traditional ingredients but that said I wouldn’t be so hasty to ‘write it off’ either, having experienced the inherent positive qualities firsthand. The key to any successful pancake is the thickness and this ‘ready’ batter mix (asda product 4149006) is no different, my general ‘rule of thumb’ is to utilize just enough batter to create a delicate, lacy pancake. With this objective in mind the batter from this mix should require no longer than 45sec ‘cooking time’ on one side with an accompanying 30sec on the reverse side using a suitably heated pan Needless to say the whole family delighted in a traditionally topped pancake bonanza for a little as £0.20p/pancake, when you begin to factor in the ‘waste-free’ element, yes, this is a little gem of a product I would wholeheartedly promote. One date for next year, Shrove Tuesday lands a little earlier, Tuesday February 17th, so please bear this mind as this type of product can much sought after in the build up to the actual day!
