“Life cover - er nope”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Thunderpug on 26/08/2015

We have paid to cover our dog since the day we collected him. We also paid a bit extra for a life cover policy. We have just been advised that the insurer has changed so they now exclude everything he has ever been to the vet for. The very opposite of life cover policy.

Not even offered fair exclusions either - he had a single slight muscle strain and the have excluded ALL joint claims, caught his eye once so they have excluded All eye related claims and had a sore ear - ALL ear claims (ps none of these we claimed for)

We have tried to insure him elsewhere but because of the exclusions added to this policy we are only being offered 'special terms' which include reduced limits of cover, higher premium as well as no cover for the above.

As such I am looking to go to the FOS as they have ruled in the favour of the customer in a case not similar to this.

I do appreciate their insurer pulled out of the market, but I bought a product from them on basis of it being a life cover, this is now not the case and I feel strongly that I am losing out financially as well as in terms of cover.

BTW I had one claim and they were excellent! so its a bit of a shame its come to this.

In much the same boat, insured our boy with them last year thinking we would have "life" cover and not only has our annual premium just gone up from £381 to £844 this year, but as he has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia now they will only pay up to £3k over his lifetime. As he isn't yet two years old that is unlikely to cover much over his entire lifetime! Sadly we will have difficulty insuring him elsewhere for this now pre-existing condition.

Though i understand VMC had to change insurer i do feel that we were promised one thing and after paying over the odds for it they shrug their shoulders and say 'oh sorry'

I went to CAB who have advised going the FOS so i will be doing that this week.

I will repeat they have been nothing but lovely, and their customer service was always good. its just a shame.

Hi, thanks for your feedback and sorry for our prices have increased. Has the eye condition been excluded for life? Have you heard from the FOS?
