Have insured my two Springer Spaniels with Direct Line for nine years now. In all that time I have never had any problems with this insurance company apart from the length of time it takes them to settle claims.
One of my Springers has had numerous problems and they have paid on every claim without question. In fact after having a stroke they are now paying for him to have physiotherapy and accupuncture.
What I would say though to those who are complaining about them, you need to read your policy and look closly at the exclusions. They dont cover euthanasia, so why claim for it and then moan when the wont pay it. Also if they only cover a condition for 12 months, then there is no point trying to claim for that condition or anything related to it after that time.
One of my Springers, developed ear problems over twelve months ago. It was a simple matter and cleared quickly and Direct Line settled the claim. He has now developed ear problems again, although it is a different condition. I havent even bothered to claim as I know that this will be regarded as a pre existing claim.
Unless you are prepared to pay for life time cover you have to accept the limitations of most pet insurance policies.

Sorry........... I'm not sure I understood correctly... They're insuring pets. And they don't cover the costs of pets being put down. Whhhhhaaaaaatttt????!!! As if that isn't the most horrible time in a pet owner's life you then have to cope with insane policies like that! What is the point of pet insurance that doesn't cover euthanasia?
