“Best and Safest Cat Litter”

★★★★★

written by StormyT on 08/06/2011

After we adopted our cat I began researching the best cat litter. We were using a clumping clay litter to control odor. However, I learned that the clay litters can be very unhealthy for your pets and family, because breathing in the scented, clay dust can cause breathing problems and worse. It can even kill kittens when litter training. I like natural alternatives and decided to find something natural. I first tried the corn husk litter. The odor wasn't horrible, but it wasn't masked as well as it was with clay litter. The big problem with that litter was the little bits that static clung to her coat and got tracked through the house. So, I tried Feline Pine. It's a pine based pellet litter, and I'm thrilled to share that it really works! It was a bit to get used to clean up wise, because it's kind of opposite clay litter clean up. The pine tar that is naturally present in the pellets masks the odor completely. I clean her box every other day, otherwise there will start to be an odor. Basically, when your cat uses her box, any pellets that get wet break down into sawdust, which clumps at the bottom of the box. When you scoop it, it does fall apart, but it doesn't travel through the house. When I clean the box I scoop out the poops and then move the clean pellets out of the way to scoop the sawdust. If money is tight you can designate a strainer for the litter box, and shake the sawdust into the bin saving every clean pellet to make your dollars stretch. When changing litter, first put a little new type litter at the bottom of the box, covered with the litter your cats are used to. At the next changing increase new little while decreasing old litter until you finally have your pets transitioned. We had no problem switching with this method. My cat is happy, healthy, and we will continue to use Feline Pine. Cannot recommend it highly enough.
