I admit to being 64 and still enjoy the games. My son gave me a demo, then I found the full version for $10 at an office supply store. Great Value. I like it better than Battlefield 2, which is rather complicated and where your life expectancy is apt to be a lot shorter that BF1942. BF is closer to my experiences than the newer ones. I don't really care for the Desert Combat scenarios.

“Battlefield 1942 (BF1942) is the game I have played...”

★★★★★

written by Darth Eviscerator on 20/03/2006

Battlefield 1942 (BF1942) is the game I have played THE most in my life, easily. Me and my friends were part of a clan and played this game obsessively for the longest time. Seems near every night we'd hop onto "Ghetto Berlin" or "G-Unit Wake only" server. We'd pick up our medic or engineer kits and off we go. We got so good that if was an absolute shame to us to not be in the top 10 on 64 person servers. We were gods.

BF 1942 multiplay is the best I've ever played. It's strategic, long, and varied. There are several maps that I never got tired of namely Stalingrad, Wake Island, Berlin, and Iwo Jima. The main objective is capture spawn points. Having more points means not only more vehicles but it means more places to defend. The way you capture one is to stay in it long enough to make it neutral (no one can spawn there) and then eliminate all the players from the other team and keep them out long enough so that it's yours.

Spawn points as before said can also spawn vehicles for your team, which is a big advantage, but only if it's wielded right. Unlike some games where vehicles are gods all but one of the vehicles in BF can be killed in one hit from the right thing, and in some cases in the right place. A light tank hit in the back by a bazooka won't stay intact for very long. Same with a plane and jeep, no matter where you hit them. A heavy tank can eat two rockets in the back but they move significantly slower and is still toast when it runs over a land mine. The only exception to the "1 hit" rule is ships, which if you think about it is fairly realistic. A ship that takes a plane bomb still floats (unless hit in the weapon arsenal but that variable isn't included here).

Infantry fair fine in this game too. They can choose one of 5 classes which will determine his weapon and special utensils. All infantry get a knife, pistol, and all but an engineer get frag grenades. Medics can heal, engineers get mines and dynamite, anti-tanks get bazookas (don't be fooled though in thinking this is the best, the rockets have no area of effect so they have to be a direct hit, which can be tough with the parabola in which it travels.), assaults get machine guns and are only good for going against other infantry, and snipers, well are snipers.

The game is very balanced and every good team needs at least one of the aforementioned. A team of all snipers and medics will bite it against a tank due to their lack of proper explosives. Sure they can spam it with grenades and that does work but a lot of them will hit the dirt before that happens. A team of all anti tanks is either poorly organized or full of noobs or both. Assualts will have no problems with them. And so on.

With all this team talk though, don't be fooled into thinking everyone is a team player. Really this game puts two teams of heroes against one another, not that it still isn't fun because you can find some people who will work with you. Generally though, people do their own thing (a problem fixed by Battlefield 2 I hear).

The biggest downside to this game is the single play which was obviously put in without any thought. The story mode is lame and even lamer are the bots. The bots will run you over, shoot teammates, crawl on the ground running into each other in a place where the enemy isn't even present. Not to mention when the enemy does see you you will have no trouble mowing them down without even moving as they couldn't hit the ground if they tried. The bots are sad, sad, sad.

I would definitely recommend this game to anyone with an internet connection. Each game is different and you will have lots of fun watching and being part of the funny and strange (but not in a bad way) things that happen (ie-driving off a cliff on accident, bailing out and watching the jeep fall on a member of the other team). Go buy it.

Battlefield 1942 is a great First Person Shooter Game. The game had as great World War II historical background, and even my grandfather likes to play it too. The graphics are well-built, and the soldier's faces are real. The wide range of maps also unable gamers to get addicted to this game. The sound effects in the game are fair.

Battlefield 1942 is AMAZING! I bought it a few years ago, and I am still addicted. The action in this game is so intense, you will find yourself really thinking that you are on wake island when the japanese invade. The game is very fast paced, and there is an abundance of vehicles to dish out destruction from. The best part of this game is the expansions and mods. Secret weapons of WWII adds some awesome, but still realistic weapons. My favorite example is the Sherman tank with the T34 Calliope rocket launcher. Also, some people make their own mods, which adds a lot of variety to the game. If you like FPS games, this is a must-buy for you.

You made a little mistake in your Battlefield 1942 PC game review. The expansion packs do have campaign mode. I have BF1942: The Road To Rome, and it certainly has a campaign mode. I wouldn't be able to say anything about Secret Weapons of WWII though.

I got the Deluxe version of Battlefield 1942 for 34.99 with Road to Rome and as soon as I put this in the computer I was addicted. The range of weapons is huge and although short, it has three difficulty settings. Multiplayer is good if availible. However the maps are limited and the Computer AI is sometimes foolish. Overall a great game, can't wait for Battlefield Vietnam!!

“This game all and all is pretty good, but the only...”

written by CCMagazine on 16/01/2004

This game all and all is pretty good, but the only thing that really irritated me is they tried to make it realistic with real ammo rations but when you get down to it, this game isnt very linear, they arent really and tasks you need to perform in the game you just run around shooting each other until the number of soldiers on one of the teams hits zero. It was fun though to be able to drive around in tanks, jeeps, and planes. I felt that the game was short and not that hard. This game has had alot of publicity but I like the linear war games, that you have tasks to do, not see how many enemies we can kill. It felt like a big huge Grand Theft Auto mod instead of a World War 2 game. Online though isnt that bad, but you need Cable or DSL. If you dont have Cable or DSL, dont bother.

I've been having quite a bit of trouble with multiplayer, but it's probably just the version of the Battlefield 1942 game that I have, or my computer :-).
<br/>Great game though!

“Don't know were to start really. I've been playing...”

★★★★★

written by Parkin74 on 21/12/2003

Don't know were to start really. I've been playing video games now for about 15 years or so, ok yes I'm nearly 30 but who cares.

BATTLEFIELDS 1942, as you've probably work out by the name is set in WWII and the fighting takes place on four fronts: North Africa, the Pacific plus Eastern and Western Europe. The game is a first person shooter and has a 15+ certification and rightly so, although there is no blood detail, there is plenty of ways to kill the enemy, so parents be warned.

When choosing the online option, you will have to connect to a server to enter a game. There are a few ways to do this you can either view all the servers that are currently online, the ones highlighted in yellow are the ones you can connect to, the others will be greyed out which are password only. To save a bit of time trailing through all the servers available, you can apply filters to the list which will show you just the ones you can use password dedicated or not.

Once you've connected to your chosen MAP e.g. WAKE ISLAND, MIDWAY, OMAHA BEACH etc.. the fun really starts. You can enter the game as Allied or Axis, either as a Scout (Sniper), Assault (Infantry), Anti-tank (Bazooka), Medic or Engineer. Each character has its own strengths, weakness and array of weapons, e.g. the Medic can heal people including your-self and the Engineer can fix vehicles and lay mines etc.

Choose your required spawn point and away you go, depending on the game you have chosen, you will have to either capture the enemies flag (the team with the most flags at the end of the game wins or Conquest - capture all the enemies control points so they have no where to spawn.

The vehicles vary on which map you choose, I think there are over 30 including Tanks, Cars Ships, Subs and Planes (use a joystick for the planes much easier). You can also communicate with your fellow soldiers with a selection of built-in voice commands, that you select with your F-keys as well as a free type option. Excellent fun.

I've been playing this game now for four months and show no signs of stopping in fact the addiction is getting worse, I almost get with-drawl symptoms if I miss a day.

I have a broadband connection to play online and experience very little lag when 30 or more gamers are on, you can get kicked from a game from time to time but not often.

I haven't talked much about the single play option as I have played it once for about 5 mins, I really cant see the point, that's the only thing that lets the game down, for people with no internet connection there are better single play games available.

So just to re-cap for me this game is without doubt the most realistic, all encompassing, addictive game I have ever played yes not just first person shooter game but game full stop. This game has coursed arguments between me and me girlfriend, sleepless nights with battles raging in my head (sad but true) plus with the choice of expansion packs and a new Vietnam Battlefields on the way, it can only get better.

This is a WW2 game where you can be either the axis or allies and yu can use any vehicle in the game such as battleships to B17's to Sherman tanks. You can either play against the computer or other people online in famous battles such as the battle of the bulge, Operation Overlord (D-Day), the Battle of Midway, to Operation Market Garden. Overall this is the best game i have ever played and THe best $50 I ahve ever spent. I play it all the timeand can't stop for hours. If you like flight sim's, 1st person shooters, WW2, Strategy games, whatever, you will love this game.
