Www.gy3.co.uk Laser Pointers

My partner bought me a LASER pointer from gy3 who are based in Guernsey. The LASER was advertised as 200Mw and it could pop balloons, light matches and all the other usual tricks that 200Mw LASERS can do.

My partner paid a total of £40.80 including shipping for the device but upon receiving it was obvious that this was a $10 Chinese import that are actually around 30Mw.

The label on the device states that the power output is '<200Mw' for a start so they shouldn't be advertising it as 200Mw in the first place. However I have a friend that repairs medical equipment and asked him for a report on the real power output of this pointer.

My friend used a device called a ‘Beamage M2’ LASER diagnostic system which is designed to measure LASER diode power.

He told me the results were bad, not because of the output power which at its highest peak using lithium Energizer batteries measured just 32Mw but because of the rapid power fluctuation caused by a bad driver board dropping the output power between 8Mw and 32Mw around 18 times per minute.

Instead of returning the item and having to pay for more shipping on a $10 LASER pointer we decided to open it and use a quality LASER driver to get a real power output from the LASER diode.

We started at a nice smooth 1.5 volts DC and slowly increased the voltage by 0.3 until the diode burnt out. As expected the LASER output was most stable at around 2.8 volts and popped at 4.01 volts.

The highest output achieved from the diode was a whopping 34Mw before it died!

This is also a website that has lots of 5 star reviews and yet there is nowhere to click to leave a review. If indeed they are genuine reviews then they are selective as not one product has anywhere near a bad review.

Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about.

Besides which the laser you claim is 200mW actually states on it "<200mW". That means, 'Less than 200mW' which means that is NOT 200mW as you claim but anything between 1mW and 199mW.

The reason I "butchered and broke it" as you so professionally put it was to obtain a true output from the LASER diode without running it through the awful 'power-spike-U-like' driver board that it is supplied with.

The results of that test are in my first post. The results were obtained from a highly skilled medical equipment engineer and I watched the process in person.

People can believe that or they can believe you, a man based in Guernsey that doesn't understand what "<" means, who appears to run a well rated online store but in fact is only contactable through a free Gmail email address and has lots of great reviews except they are hosted on his own website which he has full control over!

And the two reasons I didn't just send it back to you were because dodgy sites like yours need to be exposed and because the postage would have cost the same as buying another two LASER's that are three times the power of the one you sent me from a genuine online source.

Hi,

As mentioned in our email, if you were unsatisfied with the laser pointer then you should have returned it for a full refund, instead you butchered it and broke it.

The "Beamage M2 laser diagnostic system" that you mention does NOT measure power of a laser pointer (take a look at their web site for details).

Our manufacturer has assured us of the quality and specification of all products sold on our web site, this is backed up by the many positive reviews on our web site and Facebook page.

Regards

Andy
