The wonderful game of shove halfpenny.
I have been spirited back to early Sunday afternoon in the local in East Dulwich 1968/69 when as a newly married man without a lot of spare cash I called in for a pint before Sunday lunch and was fortunate to find a group of older guys playing this wonderful game. They not only invited me to join in and taught me how to play but also plied me with the occasional pint 3 weeks out of 4 when I could not afford to by a round. In those days as an ex keen snooker player I soon found that this game was not dissimilar in requiring skills not unlike billiards. It was a wonderful couple years before I moved on and I now find that the skills are returning.
The quality of this board is high but does not have the character of the boards of old, but they took years to mature hopefully this purchase will rise to those heights for a future generation.
Fortunately I have a son who is a hoarder and he kept my original coins which I shall soon be collecting and there hangs the only criticism I have, I do feel the coins issued should be polished on one face side, it is amazing the difference it makes in playing the game giving one the ability to spin the coins, also there ought to be a recess within the backstop for the chalk.
