“Unbelievably bad!”

★★☆☆☆

written by stephen.whitfield on 27/07/2012

I had my eyes tested for the first time ever at Tesco Opticians, Dragonville, Durham on 10th June 2012 and chose 2 pairs of spectacles(buy one get one free)for a cost of £149. I had a phone call on 18th June to say they were ready and picked them up that evening and was happy with them, although disappointed to see that a new offer commenced 2 days after my eye test offering free prescription sunglasses which would have been more advantageous to me than the other offer and I felt this could have been mentioned at the time of my eye test. However, I have no complaint regarding the service so far, but wrote to Tesco Opticians Head Office on 19 June expressing disappointment that that offer could not have been mentioned at the time of my eye test. I received an acknowledgement letter dated 28th June asking for 21 days to investigate.
However, on 26th June the lenses dropped out of one of the pairs of glasses (8 days from purchase) and I then used the other pair, and my parents took the broken glasses back to Tesco Opticians. The assistant we spoke to said he could try to put the lenses back in, but we would have to sign a disclaimer in case he broke the frames, which we refused to do. He went on to say that the frames were slightly out of line and the guarantee would not apply. He also said that the style of frame was unsuitable for wearing for work - which was not explained at the time of purchase, and in any case I needed to wear them all the time. I subsequently checked my other pair of glasses and they are also slightly out of line, as are my parents glasses, none of which have lost the lenses.

I have today received a response from Tesco Opticians saying it was "unfortunate" that the new offer started 2 days after my eye test. Which I agree with. No mention is made of replacing the 8 day old broken glasses and I am obviously going to have to take this further, but I should not have to. I would not recommend Tesco Opticians to anyone.
