“Variable service quality.”

I registered with Books Direct's Books for Children arm when expecting my first child in 2008. The introductory offer was good, and I knew I would be spending more than £50 on books for him within the first year. Service has been variable and the Editor's Choice thing really did not work for most customers. Overall, they have been okay, though the customer services telephone team has been a generic call centre with limited English, and a crib-card list of answers and resolutions for the last two years. Delivery used to be within two weeks but seemed to be one person directly employed per area, so you could speak to them. Now it is a third-party courier who -though the recommended delivery time is now only 3-5 working days, sometimes 'loses' deliveries. However, I've found replacements have been sent at no extra charge when the courier has failed to deliver and I've complained. The books delivered sometimes have damaged covers, and value for money is variable -always check title prices against other online sellers when thinking of ordering. Since this week the website has been 'Cached', as has the BCA site with many links not working, and my account was first empty of details, and now the login section has gone completely -as have many of the links on the site. I placed an order last week which I had expected to receive earlier this week, luckily I put it on account -it's much less hassle to pay them when you have actually got the books, rather than upfront -due to courier inconsistencies. Does anyone know if the company has suddenly gone out of business? I've had no joy trying to contact them which would suggest this may be the case.

Update: The Bookseller has an article -BCA was sold to German group Bertelsmann in 2008 -but BCA members were not told about this, and has now been sold again, along with Bertelsmann's other UK businesses -World Books etc - no revelation of who has bought it.

Can you give less than one star? I followed a link to their website - which didn't work very well. I had problems with the payment page but stuck with it. It did send alarm bells ringing but I thought things were odd-on kosher. It was the only website I've used and paid through that I had doubts about. After putting my card through twice - the first time it didn't work, then the second time it eventually failed. I gave up with misgivings. I had a call from HSBC not too long afterwards saying they had found a cloned card (the same one). I immediately suspected this website. Either their security is very lax or there is something more sinister. Be very careful.

I was offered free indroduction books (childrens booksdirect) and told if i dont want anymore then just send them back (not obligation), which i did when the chap tried to deliever them i didnt accept them, now nearly 10 months on, they are trying to charge me for books that i have'nt got and if i want to close the account i was informed i would have to pay £20 for the privilage to do so, I am seeking legal advise, I dont owe them any money because I never ordered any books, and when i pointed out that i never actually signed anything to agree to there commitment they could'nt answer me, and i also said that they should tell people when they call them to offer the books that you have to buy or you will get charged they said they do inform people, they dont because i would never have had them in the first place. Apparently i need to order 5 more books or they will refer me to debt collexction agent, so the company just rips people off, either way i have to send money either by buying books or to cancel a membership, advice STAY away their cowboys

tried to place orders recently problem one, then found the account was closed unknown to me problem 2, account in credit £50 problem 3, on contacting books direct phone/email they tell me that I need to check my details as they are incorrect. Advice stay away, I want my money and will not go away.

I have been a member of their History club for a number of years. Overall my experiences have been satisfactory with the odd problem on rare occasions. Problems always resolved to my satisfaction ( generally free delivery vouchers not applied to order ). Club has recently been revamped with NO editor's choice and FREE delivery on web orders valued over £5. Suspect that if you don't have access to their website then delivery charges on orders by post or phone could make book order expensive.

I ordered books from this company on the 3rd July 2010 which says i will receive in 1 - 5 working days I called the company because i waited 10 days and still not received them. The adviser of the company told me they had send them out on the 5th July by courier I informed her that it is now the 14th July and normally when sent by courier you receive them in at the most 48 hours she agreed with me and said i would receive the books by today 16th July (and guess what still not received them). Will not use this company again sorry i never read the reviews before i ordered the books

Been a member with them, cancelled the account, 6 months later they start sending editors choices again. I plan to report this company to trading standards and taking them to court.

Don,t deal with them it is almost financial suicide you are constantly charged each month for things you don,t know about and get sent threatening letters about further action.The so called customer care dos,ent care because they are never available ,ditto there website.don,t even think of getting involved.

I have just fulfilled the membership requirement and was pursueaded to stay in membership by accepting their offer of removing my name from their notorious nasty editor's choice list. However, they broke their promise and continued sending me a book that I did not order. Moreover, they even refused to offer free P&P label and asked to send it back at my own cost.

I would advice anyone who is considering joining the club to stay away from it, if you don't want annoying surprises and arrogant customer service personnel from overseas.

I have never been more frustrated than I have been with Books for Children by Books Direct. Despite having bought five books as agreed initially and having paid off the outstanding balance, I was told that I couldn't close my account. According to them, two of those books did not count towards the five...they only agreed to close it when they knew I wasn't going to have anymore nonsense. I have been charged for postage and late payment without giving information prior to ordering. I am considering making a formal complaint.

Introductory offer despatched fairly quickly but hasn't arrived after 15 days. Emailed Books Direct to ask what had happened, no reply. Rang to ask what happened to the delivery and after listening to lengthy phone options of which 'speak to an advisor' was last, I was given no advice as to what happend to my delivery, instead I was asked to fill in a 'non-delivery' form to receive credit and was then told I can ask them to replacement once they have received the form. Not happy, just a load of hassle for as somthing as simple as getting books delivered. Will be sticking to Amazon in future.

I didn't even get to join Books Direct, I browsed the site and chose my six books for the introductory offer and was told to expect delivery within two weeks.

Three weeks later, nothing, I sent an e-mail to notify them that I had not taken delivery and received a reply stating, "We are sorry you didn't receive your introductory package, those books were so popular with our customers that we ran out of stock and aren't getting anymore."

If this was the case, why wasn't the items tagged as out of stock on the website. The e-mail also suggested I go back to the site and choose different books, so I took a look.

Surprise, surprise, the books I ordered are still available to order. What kind of company are they running?

I refuse to use them now even though they are the only book club in the UK.

DO NOT USE!!!!!

I have spoken to Books Direct 10 times in the last 6 months, they sent me editors choice books which i was not aware you have to reject! And after asking them to collect the first lot 3 times, they sent me more.......... again asking 3 times to collect.

Now I received a call around 4 weeks ago saying they are passing my account over to a debt collection agnecy as I have paid my account. Lots of my previous communication has been in e-mail so at least its in writing!! After this call the idiot hung up on me as it was 8.30pm! as thats when they close. So when I phoned back the next day I was told they wold collect within 5 days ..... and also send me a letter telling me I do not owe them anything as they're idiots basically!!

And as if I need to say - THEY STILL (4 WEEKS LATER) HAVE NOT collected the books from me!

I think the general point is stay away from these con artists who do not have ANY UK based call centres nor any experience in anything.

I received an editors choice from Books Direct which I was not aware you have to reject every month, otherwise they send to you automatically and add the cost to your account. Well since I received one at the end of March 09, I have contacted them 4 times for a return and they never come to collect. I have now asked them to either come and collect it free of charge and cancel my membership or to let me keep the book take the fee off my account and cancel my membership. I am awaiting a response. I would suggest going to waterstones and just buying when you fancy it, this just ain't worth the hassle! Nothing but problems

I accepted an offer to receive books on approval from BooksDirect (UK). I did not like the titles and returned them to the company. I kept getting e-mail offers and catalogs in the post. In order to unsubscribe they said I had to have a membership number. I asked for one then unsubscribed.
They now want £33.00 from me as a fee for cancelling my subscription. I replied that I owed them nothing because I did not make any purchases from them. I now have a notice from a collection agency for the money.

i signed up to books direct about 18 months ago i recieved the cheapo books that i wanted and paid for them no problem. i knew that i would have to recieve 4 editors choice which i did which can i just say is a TOTAL rip off paying like £20 for two books is a joke so anyway once i had held up my end of the deal. i closed my account about 4 months ago my account was cleared and as far as i knew it was closed untill about 2weeks ago where within a week 3 lots off books arrived not pleased at all i sent nthem back they are now saying they havent recieved the books back and are demanding over £70 off me they are a joke be extremely careful!!!!!!!!!!

Right. We signed up cos u could get free PC security on a cheapo PC I bought. My wife paid about £3 or £4 for a couple of books. These never arrived although the money was taken. This was about 2 months ago, maybe a bit more. That was the last she heard of it apart from being bombarded with emails about 5 a day, everyday. Last week a random book (not one she'd ordered) arrived through the post, with an invoice for about £10. It also stated if we didn't want the book, to return it at a cost to her of £3. We went online, and found that my wife hadn't even activated her account, so there was no way to deselect herself from being sent these books and emails. Aaaargh. Trying to phone them on the 0844 number they provide just keeps you on hold, although we had a minor victory, beating the "queue" system by calling their landline directly which was answered immediately- found the number on saynoto0870.com.

To be fair, we finally got through, and the guy says he has cancelled our account. We'll see. He's gonna send a label to send the book back for free too.

Also, part of the deal with them is to buy 2 books per year at full price. Although there are only a few books they deem to be at full price that count.

I`ve seen a link from BooksDirect on a website, where they offered a free book for my registration, I only had to pay the postage and from then on a free catalogue with their new books and promotions.
However, they decided to send me 2 books, which they called the editor`s choice, for which I had to pay and in case I wanted to return them, I had to call and rearrange a colection for which I would have to pay £3 or I could just do it myself and post them back by royal mail.
According to the consumer protection regulations, If you want to return an unwanted item, the company who sent it has to pick it up at their own expenses, otherwise you are entitled to keep the items for yourself at no cost.
Too much wasted time for a freebie...
