my kx 500 is my pride and joy its the fastest bike iv ever ridden competitively. i can get everything new through a local kawasaki dealer when things break, whitch they dont.

i spent the best part of a year struggling with set up but have finaly overcome the choppy backend and mushy front forks.

with fresh oil in the breaks you can stop and turn this heavy machine on a sixpence rarely taking it out of third then role the gas on if ur brave enough.

this machine is sublime on a oldschool motorcross track, handling wise i go 4 a high rise seat so i dont get stuck at the front of the bike which means the back end breaks away all the time! moose racing pegs the factory ones are rubbish, standard gearing and ally rads off e-bay, the kx500 is a awsum motorcross bike and in the right hands isnt half the animal people make out also ppl on new bikes get real upset when u blow past them on something there dad used 2 ride

please get one and look after it they are mint

I currently own two cr500's . I bought both new and have had excellent service from both. I did install fmf Gnarly pipes and silencers on both and run boyseen Rad valves on both. This gives the bikes a better "hit". The only factory problem I had was with the chrome plating on one of the fork tubes, it started peeling off. This was replaced under warranty. All other repairs have been due to normal wear.

I have a 02 Kawasaki KX 500 and after taking my time tuning the bike I must say it is one of the easiest of the big bore dirt bikes one can ride. IMO That is if you can control your wrist. After adjusting the KIPS valve, gnarly pipe, and re jetting the carb; this bike can be very manageable. Smooth acceleration from rolling speed to wot.

This machine is a pretty good bike in my opinion, but with its amazing powerband it can get to be hard to ride without having to hold on for your life witch isn't always a good thing.

I have owned two KX500s. The first was a 1997 and now have had a 2001 since it was new. Both bikes were very reliable and extremely fast. I have raced it against everything from cr's yz's several ktm's, a friends old RM500, and even several street bikes that also included a ninja in a 1 block race and smoked them all easily! Oh, I also raced a thumper racing built Xr600. Bored to 660 with all their trick parts and it wouldnt keep up with my KX500 either! For the guys who say the KX500 isnt fast, try letting someone who knows what they are doing rebuild the motor!

★★★★★

written by KX500freak on 11/05/2008

I own a 2002 Kawasaki KX500. Ask old school motocrossers about the KX500. The KX500 is an awesome machine. Great for tracks or trails depending on how its setup. A bigbore 2-stroke cannot be ridden like a 4-popper. To be good on a KX500, requires throttle discipline and clutch mastery. You have to ease on the power and use the clutch as necessary to manage traction. Or you will just spin the tire or loop out. Most old timers say the best things you can do for the KX500 is setup the suspension for the riders weight, skill level, and type of riding. And, perform maintenance at the required intervals. Much cheaper to maintain then a 4-stroke, and way more power. If you want a super fun bike thats powerful, inexpensive and reliable get a KX500.

Had a Yamaha kx 500 from new. Mine is a 1987 so tell you how old I am this is a great bike loads of power and good handling all I have ever done to this bike is a new piston ring and a new set of clucth plates. I have had the bike on the road for the last year it leaves my wr 450 Yamaha way in the distant. road the kx at Weston super mere beach race and was clocked in the speed trap at 121mph not bad for a stock dirt bike now starting to ride vmx this bike is great its got more power then these modern 4 strokes and will last longer as mine is 21 years old and still going strong. If you get a chance to ride one be careful they just keep pulling and pulling. Will make you smile every time you ride the kx 500.

“The KX500 is a ugly, and outdated (personal opinion)....”

★★★★★

written by K5 on 18/02/2008

The KX500 is a ugly, and outdated (personal opinion). The steering and suspension is average and the ergonomics aren't the greatest. But it you cant scratch that power itch with your 250 or 450, the 500 is the answer. Relentless torque and easy power wheelies is what you are looking at.
I have had a KX500 for over 2 years now and have not had a single problem, never even fouled a plug. In my opinion the engine is bulletproof, I've had it flat out for extended runs, dune missions, creek crossings whatever, it loves it.
Straight off the bat most KX500s are tunned rich and a few ponies and a much crisper throttle can be found in a 20min tweak of the carby. A good after market pipe and muffler will give a nice 2-stroke crackle with more power and crispness.
There are slight differences between the kx and the cr, the cr's handling and suspension is more motocross orientated whilst the kx is more stable at high speed and suitable for woods and dessert riding. The kx has a stronger capability for power as it has the more developed cylinder with power valves whilst the cr looks better.
With an aluminium frame conversion this bike would be unstoppable and even more enjoyable to ride. However this bike is not for everyone, but if you want a 500, you'll already know.

“The ergonomics on my Kawasaki KX 500 could've been...”

★★★★★

written by on 03/01/2008

The ergonomics on my Kawasaki KX 500 could've been better and more like the Honda CR500's. Not much of a motor cross bike but anything else off road it's hard to beat especially wide open ground or on hills where power is needed the most. I hill climb competitively and all the 500's are very powerful but I opt for the mean green machine. My rarely used, mint, and shiny '89 KX has modifications (fatty pipe and silencer, V Force reeds and valves, 44mm electron-megaton flat sided carb, head shaved, cylinder ported, extra wide rear rim, and high gearing) but I just found more ways to get just that little bit more yet, but it'll still go over backwards in 3rd gear with 13 inches extended on the rear end on flat ground. Next I'm getting it bored over to a 565cc and installing a 46 or 48mm electron carb, installing inverted forks and a KX65 gas tank. I've got a friend that took 1st place at a national hill climb aboard a CR500 which was very fast. Couple of years later he purchased a KX500 fully modified and he had said the KX was by far more powerful than the CR. All depending on the individuals day though any bike could win at the climbs KTM, KX, or CR. Just from what's been said to me the KX's motor edges it out for hill climbing.

Ive rode with guys with KTM 520 and KTM 495's and CRF 450's and WRF 450's. Nothing, and I mean nothing has been able to stay with the Big Bore KX. I've had or rode everything from the 1978 RM 400 to a 2006 KTM 525 and the KX 500 has it all. The best power, great handling and good suspension. If you a weak rider it is not for you.

I haven't ridden mine yet although I am dying to! I bought mine for five hundred dollars, she needs a clutch and a few other goodies but the bike is all there! Since I am a professional heavy truck mechanic and dabble with bikes in my spare time, I figured this was a steal of a deal! Can't wait, especially since my friends think I am crazy for having any interest in such a beast! By the way, does anybody know the horse power rating? I have heard 60 and some folks say 50 to 55! What is it really rated at?

PS: I have been riding motorcycles for about 32 years now!

This Kawasaki KX 500 bike is a real joy to ride or race. I never hesitate to race this awesome piece of motocross history and will carry on doing so until my body says no more. Perfect power, great handling, reliable and a joy to go pass them 4 strokes

written by kx500guy on 15/05/2006

I am a woods/hare scramble rider and have never ridden a bike with this much pure speed. My Kawasaki KX 500 has a Steahly flywheel weight (A must for riding in the woods). It is a great bike and is easily the best dollar-per-hp deal you can get. You can make those guys on expensive 4 stroke 450s look like they are standing still. I love this bike, it lugs perfectly in the tight stuff and can climb anything (Which can be a problem because if you do not make the hill, you cant blame the bike) and goes faster in the woods than you need to go. I know it isn't for everyone but it is the perfect fit for someone who likes the extra power and is a little larger. I am 5'10" 200lbs so smaller bikes tend to be a bit soft.

written by jody young on 14/05/2006

There are a lot of half hearted, hip shooting comments about the Kawasaki KX 500 500. Ignorance is defined as lack of knowledge. The comments about the kx being the fastest. Maybe these guys haven't checked horse power ratings. Or shoot out reviews. Because if they did they would know that KX is definitely not the fastest two stroke on planet. The KTM 495 still holds the record 127 miles per hour set at Salt Flats. The dyno tests are clear as well when two strokes were put side by side. So for the record it goes 495 KTM 550 KTM 540 KTM 500 KTM KX 500 cr 500

Gear up any dirt bike and will go fast---127 MPH could be obtained by a KX500 also--62hp and 230lbs, should not be a problem, My Wide Glide had 68hp and was 606lbs and it would go 118..
Compare this: 1-AMA 500cc National Motocross Championship, NINE straight victories in the grueling Baja 1000, EIGHT AMA National Hare & Hound Championships and TWO Best in the Desert Las Vegas-to-Reno victories.
So, for the record, it goes KX500 1st - everything else (KTM included) 2nd.

The Kawasaki KX 500 pulls wheels in every gear. It must be one of the fastest two strokes ever made I've got a Yamaha 450 quad 2005 and it leaves that in the distance. It's a very good bike at the end of the day.
